The new uniforms, with hi viz shoulder pads, for all gardaí, Sergeants and Inspectors

Gulp.

This morning.

Via RTE News:

…gardaí will in future wear polo shirts, two-tone soft shell and waterproof jackets and operational trousers.

The uniform will also be clearly badged with the Garda crest for the first time.

Gardaí will no longer wear shirts and ties, except on formal occasions, but will continue to wear the distinctive Garda peaked cap.

Stylish and powerful?

Or reminiscent of low-budget 1980s TV sci-fi?

Only you can decide.

      Was it Truman who said
You can put a pig in a suit and it’s still a pig
I have no faith on the policing at all
Get them hob nob boots and get them out on the beat

A good friend of mine fathered twins last month
On the night that poor girl was beaten to a pulp in cork, one of the twins was screaming,so being a good father
He his wife and the two kids drove down to the childrens hospital for the doctors to see if the kid was fine.
Thank god it was a false alarm
      This was around midnight
He was stopped the gardai asked him what was he doing out.
He replied telling him about the scare.
      The gardai replied
Well sir I am going to breathalyse you
What did he think to come to the conclusion my mate was drinking as he awaited his sons life and sure you do go down to the pub around midnight with two infants and your wife in toe

It’s not uniforms needed to smarten up gardai, It’s gardai that are fit for the job

Cool. Those ‘operational trousers’ are very trendy.
    Well worth the 20 million
    20 MILLION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Money well wasted, why not spend another 10 million updating the letterhead or changing the tone of the blue in the crest, everything else about the force is perfectly well resourced, yippeee!

your bonus question is ‘a relative of which TD secured the contract to supply this uniform upgrade?’

Looking more like the Aussie coppers by the day. Hope they don’t start acting like them too. The Aussie coppers are absolute thugs.

I have a pair of non-operational trousers. The seam split down the whole backside and now everyone knows if I am a boxers or briefs man.

Getting rid of the tie is sensible. I used be on ambulance duty (volunteer) and in my recent security job they had these clip on ties so an assailant could not grab it and hold you. I think not having them is a better idea for everyday use.

I think a long sleeved version of the shirt would be a good idea for colder weather, but what the hey!

Not sure I like the actual design of the jackets, but if it makes them safer on the roads, particularly at night, I am all for it. But I agree, it does look a little Chief O’Brien-ish :-)

I do hope though that the Gardai at all levels had some input, and it is not just an imposition
