Joe Duffy’s listeners decry his support for the oft-vandalised Necrology Wall at Glasnevin Cemetery, containing the names of Black and Tans among the dead.

Do you really think that honoring the British Empire and the Black and Tans in Dublin is going to lead to healing? By your logic the Shankill Road should be putting up a mural of Bobby Sands, and there should be a giant statue of James Connolly outside the Palace of Westminster.

What’s that got to do with 1916 or the Irish War of Independence? Do you think they’d put a statue of James Connolly, Patrick Pearse, Tom Clarke, or Markievicz outside the Palace of Westminster?
Do you know who Gandhi was? and what he did in India?
I do know what Gandhi did. But he wasn’t solely responsible for freeing India. He was one of many Indian leaders. The grossly unreliable Ben Kingsley version of Gandhi has a lot of currency in some Western circles, but in India he’s known as one of the many freedom fighters, not the sole one, and his strategic pacifism was backed by those other Indians who held guns and said ‘if you don’t deal with Gandhi, you’ll deal with us’. When Gandhi lived in South Africa he recruited for the British Army (during WWI). And Gandhi was dead set on keeping the Untouchables out of civic politics. He’s the ‘acceptable’ rebel for the British elite. Since the Kingsley film he’s become their hero.
I’m sure such a monument, including members of the IRA, would go down well outside a hotel in Brighton. Not.

I always think the term West Brit is really just a euphemism used by culchies to describe a person with a reasonable amount of intelligence and education because they’re unable to write ‘ a person with a reasonable amount of intelligence and education ‘ on account of all the long words.

And these same people are almost certainly United Irelanders who will blather about how much they’re prepared to discuss and dialogue and respect . Lies in other words. Unionists are rubbing their hands with glee every time the hardliners start up their barstool blather.
If we agreed to rejoin the Commonwealth, and if we agreed to have the Queen of England as our head of state, the Unionists still wouldn’t join a United Ireland. A United Ireland will come about because of a numerical increase of nationalists and republicans in the North, not because the Unionists have been persuaded to join. You can no more persuade a Unionist to agree to a United Ireland than you can persuade a member of the Klu Klux Klan to respect African Americans. As for hardliners, the vast majority of Irish people find this wall offensive. It’s not a minority position (see what happened when Charlie Flanagan wanted to honor the Black and Tans. Even the Fine Gael membership opposed this).
There’s no such person as the queen of England.
