I wonder how many nightclubs Dublin has now? Far less I’d guess, despite the much bigger population. A huge number seem to have closed since the mid 2000s.

Found an article that answers my own question, its pretty shocking:

“There were a total of 522 dance venues across Ireland in the year 2000, with 100 in Dublin, compared to about 85 across the country today. The average number of venues per county has dropped from 19 to about three, with some now at zero. That’s an 84% percent drop of clubs since 2000.”

Might be worth its own proper article tomorrow?

The latest research from John Hopkins University suggests lockdowns had very little effect on the spread of any viruses but they certainly devastated our social hubs. It’s hard to imagine how there are any nightclubs left & it’s the same with pubs & live music venues.
In light of that, I suppose it’s no surprise that nightclubs are being observed as an historical phenomenon, soon to become an increasingly distant memory from an era when people socialised in Real Life, rather than online.
