Thank Flor it’s Friday.
As Storm Eunice abates and the nation crawls out from behind the sofa, dusts itself down and straightens its tie, it’s time to celebrate with more voucherless music argy-bargy.
This week the theme comes courtesy of regular reader Liam Deliverance who asks: What’s your favourite moment of musical psychedelia?
Here’s mine.
Please include video links if possible.
Lines close on Saturday at Midnight.

Meanwhile….
Last week I asked you for your favourite karaoke song, after a suggestion by Millie.
Millie herself and Janet both won my esteem with their choices:
Maria McKee – Show Me Heaven
Millie wrote:
“This song comes attached to a very emotionally difficult moment from my childhood, so much so that for a long time I would cry uncontrollably when I heard it. So to deal with this, I learned the words and taught myself to sing it. To this day, it remains my karaoke song and I only sometimes shed a tear. Never underestimate how grief can affect you, even after 20 years have passed.”
Meanwhile…
Alain Baschung – La nuit je mens
So mucky it’s age restricted!
Janet, dreams of an alternate universe wrote:
“One for that nostalgic rose-tinted glasses time of the night….you know the time, my rendition of La Nuit Je Mens fills me with delightful agony; others just agony probably ;) the best part is it’s that talky singing the French do best!”
Nick says: Well done, Millie and Janet and thanks all.
Last week: Win Nick’s Esteem

The first time I heard this was also the first day the expression wall of sound made perfect sense.

We’ll done on the win Millie & Janet
Incense & Peppermints by The Strawberry alarm clock for me today.

Well done Millie and Janet!
Well deserved!
Has to be the microtone filled ode to a snake:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-i1XZc8ZwA
Something about microtones thats slightly unnerving, like music played in the minor key. Its freaky
The Byrds Eight Mile is one of the first if not the first psychedelic single. This is the live version from Filmore East and it’s class, from the tight rhythm section through to the lead guitar.

+1
And an honourable mention for I Wasn’t Born to Follow from the Easy Rider soundtrack.
https://youtu.be/3hEfcawx6Fc
…which also featured Kyrie Eleison/Mardi Gras (When the Saints) by the Electric Prunes. This psychedelic gem, however, was their masterpiece.

psychedelia you say? well there has got to be copious amounts of gear involved here surely….
B-52’s – Rock Lobster

Amon Duul II – Im Krater Blúhm Wieder Die Baume
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03KkuJ7Frbw
I like how it builds so gradually and subtly, so it just gently washes over and engulfs you like a warm bath, while occasionally poking you with a nice bit of fill to keep you awake
which is what you want, naturally
Aphex Twin – Bucephalus Bouncing Ball https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLjwJijT7gQ Probably has to be this followed by this:
Whitenoise – Love Without Sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO9LS3A9iB8
Why are the curtains melting?
totally obvious choice of course, but ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ by the Beatles.

More or less invented the notion of looping samples as far as I know, and overdubbing was recorded live by George Martin pushing up and down all the knobs or something. Also, the first use of a backwardsy guitar track in a pop recording.
Not bad work for an oul lad
‘the first use of a backwardsy guitar track in a pop recording.’ It was. The first release with one was ‘Rain’ b-side to ‘Paperback Writer’.
Hawkwind – Orgone Accumulator
https://youtu.be/KhWArBhPWu0
“And it makes me feel greater”
If it wasn’t just a song, I’d choose the entire Space Ritual album… but that would be cheating.
https://youtu.be/J8ZVRzj7bkU
Wilhelm Reich, i think invented the orgone accumulator, an interesting figure.
he knew what it felt like to have his books burned.
I don’t know much detail but but will learn more some day.
Al Stewart – Turn Into Earth (1966)

Bualadh bos Janet and Millie – may Nick’s esteem be a balm to ye both.
The problem with psychedelia is i’m not really sure what does and doesn’t qualify. In playing it safe and just assuming it’s method-in-the-madness instrument feedback, drone, effects and all kinds of sonic kitchen sink cutting and pasting I’ll throw in super Swedish artist Dungen and “Ta det Lungt”

Your mind must learn to roam……

Satan Speaks https://youtu.be/FBkPQZ9WKSM
if you didn’t see the sleeve, or perhaps know the title you could enjoy the journey.
I love the percussion.
a bit like if you didn’t see the wee maggots in the ” tea ” you strained in Thailand you might not be convinced they were squirming all over your back two hours later
two hours and five minutes later,(or an eternity) you realise that maggots just got bad press and they are fine really, they were only acting the maggot.
tee hee and who cares about maggots when it dawn’s on you that your husband is slowly morphing into a giant chicken, hell he even does the neck thingy when he walks and it’s freaking both you and your little shadow friend standing in the corner there.
Gong – “I’ve Bin Stone Before”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Lc9BdZMgGg
and basically anything from the Camembert Electrique album… crack’in album
Available here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8c-Nl_r9Zs
Initially I thought first generation psychedelic, but this topic seems strangely broad. how appropriate.

Love – Alone Again or
Neat plot twist: the song was written by Bryan McLean who was a half brother to former Harold’s Cross resident, Maria McKee, who was Millie’s winning choice last week.

As per usual I’ve missed the deadline, but hey just incase there’s an extension I’m going for the original Nirvana with the trippy Rainbow Chaser, it’s always stayed with me since the first time I heard it.
If you think about how old it is it’s still as fresh as ever!!

Well done Janet!
a pleasure shared is a pleasure doubled my co winner :)
Oh Wouldn’t it be nice, to get on with me neighbours
But they make it very clear, they’ve got no room for ravers
They stop me from groovin’, they bang on me wall
They’re doing me crust in, it’s no good at all, ah!
Lazy Sunday afternoon
