This afternoon.

Via RTÉ News:

“It’s not just a replacement of LEDs, we’ll be replacing a number of the columns, underground cables and various other things to bring the lighting infrastructure up to spec,” said Brendan O’Brien, head of technical services.

“Public lighting infrastructure is an important part of the city. The reasons we’ve had to spend this amount of money is to make up on a deficit of spending over the decades.”

“We’ll have lower energy costs… and we’ll also save, roughly speaking, around 2,500 tonnes of CO2 per year.”

He said there will also be less maintenance and an easier way to detect outages.

“We’ll have a computer-controlled system that will allow us to know what lights are out and also have the ability to dim at various times and choose different lights (in various settings),” he said.

    Cheaper to run.

So you can just buy blackout curtains to avoid the blue light emitting from them to screw up your sleep.

Bet no EIA has been done on this…

The colour temperature of most LED bulbs is far too bright and disturbs humans and wildlife alike.

      1. Oro

Colour temperature doesn’t denote brightness – that’s the lumen output you’re thinking of. Let’s hope they choose a lower end of scale colour temp tho.

It’s the colour temperature that disturbs wildlife, not the brightness, as sodium lamps were plenty bright. The redder the better as a general rule, otherwise it disturbs night vision, sleeping habits etc of people and insects.

Yes as I said let’s hope they choose a lower colour temperature. Brightness does affect people and wildlife tho. And any artificial light will interfere with wildlife regardless.

High CRI is better, I’m not entirely sure what your comment means though, maybe I’m agreeing with you. It renders the objects that it illuminates more naturally than a LED with a low CRI would. This is not only nicer looking but generally safer for public use (makes pedestrians more legible to drivers for instance). Also the desired colour temp should generally be achieved with the LED spec rather than retrofitting with a tinted filter, any good lighting designer would tell you that.

There are many good colour tunable options available now, where you can adjust the colour temp of the diodes after install which is a great option (altho obv more expensive) and some great strips that change colour temp as they dim (referred to as warm dim / ambient dim) that mimics the way colour temp changes along the dimming curve like standard incandescent or halogen would. Great technology.

Some LEDs have high CRI, some lower. High CRI (90+) is becoming a requirement in the requirements of more progressive planning authorities.

Could have been fixed? It hasn’t happened yet.

You’re complaining about something they haven’t done.

These lights are poo. Maybe they can be calibrated to not fatally destroy nightlife and give humans headaches, but we can be sure DCC won’t be doing that.

Reminds me of that hoary old definition of a one-horse-town:

‘The street lights dim when you plug in your electric razor’

I managed 2 whole minutes of that rumble video.
“mass cull….plan dating back 1000’s of years”.
Don’t you just hate when you’ve been planning to deal with an issue for ages and then it grows exponentially!
Even if there is an illuminati out there plotting to kill a whole bunch of us I’d be starting to doubt their competence to pull it off at this stage.
We’re far more likely to be destroyed by a “normal accident” than some elaborate plot.

That video…or at least the opening few minutes of it…are pretty funny and also FREAKING MENTAL.

I feel like I’m now going to lose an hour or two of my life down the rabbit hole of bulb based conspiracy theories, something I was previously unaware of being an actual thing so thanks, Broadsheet!

I agree- as anyone who has been involved in the rollout of new tech will tell you, if it can go wrong, it will go wrong- or at least not work as promised.

Current point in case being these mNRA vaccines which have been an abysmal failure. The real question to be answered there is why the authorities were so keen to get everyone jabbed of course.

LED light can damage eyes, health authority warns

New findings confirm earlier concerns that “exposure to an intense and powerful [LED] light is ‘photo-toxic’ and can lead to irreversible loss of retinal cells and diminished sharpness of vision,” the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) warned in a statement.

The report distinguished between acute exposure of high-intensity LED light, and “chronic exposure” to lower intensity sources.

While less dangerous, even chronic exposure can “accelerate the ageing of retinal tissue, contributing to a decline in visual acuity and certain degenerative diseases such as age-related macular degeneration,” the agency concluded.

Ah, sure who needs eyesight anyway? Cheaper lights for the years you retain vision makes way more sense.

    1. Oro

Your example isn’t fair though. It’s comparing a high intensity LED light with a low intensity (non specific) other source. LED doesn’t have to be high intensity, just as other sources don’t have to be low intensity.

Obviously a bright light will affect your eyes more than a dimmer light. LEDs aren’t necessarily brighter, they just tend to be, however they can be dimmed quite effectively now to whatever level you choose (using 0-10v dimming protocols for example). Let’s hope DCC makes some good choices (lol). LED tech is a much more sustainable option, and can be as beautiful as other light sources, you just have to be more thoughtful with the spec.

The SDCC have been rolling them out for the past few months and they are extremely bright. I ended up using a roller and black paint to take the harshness down a peg, on the one outside my house.

Greetings, Dublin City Council! Wishing you a warm welcome to year 2005.

Meanwhile, on planet Earth, the year is 2022. Companies are having hard times sourcing any piece of industrial/computer-based technology more complex than two cans and a piece of string.
“Late 2022” has quietly shifted to “Q1 2023”.
