Diarmuid Rossa Phelan

This morning.

Tallaght Distrcit Court

Senior Counsel Diarmuid Rossa Phelan was charged with murder of Keith Conlon in farmland in Tallaght last Tuesday. Mr Conlon died in hospital yesterday.

Via Independent.ie:

Det Gda Michael McGrath, of Tallaght Garda station, gave evidence saying he arrested the accused last night for the purposes of charging him with murder.

The court heard that Mr Phelan, with an address at Kiltalown Lane in Tallaght, made no reply when the single charge was put to him.

Judge Patricia McNamara remanded him in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court via video link next Friday.

If he was a Dad of 3 would it be less tragic, or god forbid ‘just’ a man with zero kids. Why do the media rate loss of life based on how often you have reproduced, it’s really strange.

I hear what you’re saying but in terms of death, the deceased is gone but those left behind suffer on, so there’s some justification for highlighting the tragedy of 4 kids now left without their dad. It’s a tragic case all round.

While cold hard logic would suggest that you are correct, and that one loss of life is equal to another regardless of children or marital status.

I think it is very human to think of it in terms of children’s, partner etc.

It’s not just himself who has had his life changed forever, his children and wives lives will forever be changed too.

      1. Broadbag

I take your points, there’s just an implication that one life is worth more than another and as you highlight Micko, implies married is more tragic than single or co-habiting, I suppose I’m being too literal or pedantic on this one.

I think it is also because of the practicalities of there now being a person raising children on their own without the children’s other parent. Financially and emotionally that’s a huge undertaking and their lives are changed forever, not just by the grief, but also how they survive on a day to day basis and continue to raise the children.

Ah I know what you mean BB

The issue that I’d have with it more is the media using it as a way to pull at heartstrings. A tragic death is a tragic death regardless of a person’s status or demographic.

But, it is very human and understandable for someone to see it in those terms.

One was a tiny baby also. All those children will now grow up without a father and let’s face it it’s hard enough losing a parent without it being as the result of an act of gun violence on a dog walk. The children will also suffer as a result of their mother having to come to terms with it. So no it’s not the most newsworthy point but if I was evaluating the severity of the offence the significance of the loss would be of relevance. As would the fact the perpetrator was, by profession, meant to be someone upholding the law not wandering around with, and using. a hand gun. Bringing the profession into disrepute is a phrase which springs to mind

      1. Broadbag

Again tiny baby losing father is more tragic than a toddler, or a 10 year old? I can see how it is to a point, but it feels very unseemly to be playing Top Trumps with the bereaved the way the media seem to.
(for the record I am both married and a father so this isn’t me being a bitter incel!).

I totally agree with you broadbag. Even if you are single you might have people relying on you. Elderly parents, a sick aunt you look in on, the 10 cats you have living with you. You can’t measure tragedy by how young the baby is etc. I’m not talking about this particular incident.

          1. Broadbag

For sure, the media can come across as very anti single people at times, or at best indifferent, as if they’re lesser beings somehow. Also couples without kids get a hard time, as if they’re defective or pariahs in some way for not wanting or being able to procreate.

        2. Dell

I agree . I also find it unsettling that when it’s a single victim they go into so much detail looking for a reaction and if it were a mass murder they would be reporting just the victim’s name amongst the other victim’s names and they would be reporting on every detail of the killers life up to that point. Or when a sportsperson commits a crime they run a list of their sporting achievements in the article. Or when they refer to victims by their last name only when recounting what happened. How they report crime of any kind is ridiculously insensitive at the best of times but also is done in a way to make as many sales as possible and that is just vulture territory.

When you say a tiny baby, do you mean it’s an abnormally small baby like say the size of a fledgling sparrow? Or did you mean a normal sized baby but made it a tiny baby for added emotion?

The problem is not rossa phelan who has urgently needed for many years psychiatric treatment but the system that promoted him and why not least Trinity. And his endorsement within the profession when the gaping chasm between his ambition and ability clear to all

In your opinion. He jumped through all the usual professional hoops: Masters at Berkeley, published in peer-reviewed publications, scholarships galore and got on well enough with solicitors to keep him in regular work. Being somewhat different isn’t always an impediment to success.

Have you expert evidence of that diagnosis Mr Langwaller?

      If you have
      Then present it
If it’s your own – then let’s have your professional credentials & training etc, to support that clinical opinion
Maybe Broadsheet will include it in your bio in future

      Otherwise, shut the púc up

Barrister ‘will be completely and utterly ruined’ if he is not granted bail over fatal shooting charge, High Court told:

“…The High Court has heard that Mr Phelan has assets valued in the millions, while during his evidence to the court on Tuesday, gardaí learned for the first time that the accused is a US citizen and has property in Colorado..”.

    1. Lilly

He should get bail. Even if he has assets in Colorado, it’s highly unlikely that he would flee. Every two-bit crook gets bail here, why make a special case of someone with a clean record? He would indeed be ruined if forced to languish in prison until his case comes up. His career, at least, would go down the toilet.
