Pledges [Updated]

This morning.

Earlier…

Yesterday.

The national accommodation pledge portal to register potential accommodation for Ukrainian refugees is open.

Ireland announced it is set to take in more than 100,000 Ukrainians fleeing conflict. It has joined the EU scheme that allows people to settle without a visa for three years.

Leaders in Dublin were widely lauded for the move, but a UK Government chief tried to justify their stricter measures by suggesting the Irish government could be endangering Britain.

A Whitehall source told the Telegraph: “Ireland has basically opened the door to everyone in Ukraine, which creates a problem due to the Common Travel Area.

“We’ve seen before with migrants from Albania that they have come through Dublin, into Belfast and across to the mainland to Liverpool. That’s created a drug cartel route.”

They added: “It’s the Home Office that will get the blame if in three or five years’ time [if] there are problems with those who come. That’s why the security checks have to be done carefully now.”

i’m quite looking forward to watching patel trying to sink the larne to stranraer ferry.

Implement a border in the Irish Sea – simple solution and Brexit deal friendly to boot.

This sounds awfully like “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

those parents are monsters. They were going to hurt their children no matter where in the world they lived. If they had to come here to face justice then so be it.

      2. Rob_G

Plenty of cases of Irish people abusing their own/other people’s children – should we not be allowed in anywhere, either?

well maybe not owning Maternity hosptals for a start….

It’ll be the standard knee-jerk responses about drugs, crime, raping your sister and Mother- see Jo’s post above. Apparently one crime reported with a non-national as the perpetrator means all non-nationals are criminals. That’s ALL of them.

While it doesn’t of course mean that new entrants across our borders are all paragons of virtue – law of averages, people commit crimes – it’ll be the usual old tropes bobbing up to the surface and displays of seig-heil racism and xenophobia from armchair generals/self-professed experts etc.

If we’re in the business of solving problems then we need to elect people who can solve them or at least make an honest fist of it. You’ve got to wade through the virtue-signalling, empty aphorisms and pretty words to get to the substance which can a lot of the time alas be lacking. That’s partly our fault as an electorate and massively a problem on the part of the State and political parties which grooms a certain type of person to be anointed within the corridors of Leinster House.

Of course – they’re just people. IMO let them in and we can figure out everything else later once they are safe.

That said, debate on why this may or may not be a good idea is always welcome, as long as it doesn’t descent into racial stereotypes, cliches or calling people racist because they may have a different opinion.

Interesting that Steo in the vid there is talking about a vaccine program for the Ukrainians.

I guess all those unused Irish booster shots won’t be wasted now. ;P

        1. Fergalito

Nothing wrong at all Micko with a rational, reasonable debate where people don’t continually threaten fear of the sky falling in or shout, roar and stamp their feet. Those self-professed all seeing eyes, self-righteous types devoid of humility and the so-called “open mind” they accuse others of not having while their own consciousness resides behind red-faced throbbing temples.

Sure couldn’t we all get a nice platter or two in as well to keep the blood-sugar up!

          1. Micko

            Absolutely agreed Ferg

And as I’ve already stated, I know very little about the situation and the events that have led up to it, so I’m pretty much staying out of it.

But, I’d be willing to listen and learn from anyone who is more informed on the subject – from both sides of the debate. As long as it doesn’t fall into the tropes we’ve mentioned above…

The seig-heil racism may be more likely to arrive than already being here I suspect.

Also, why has that pledge portal thing got a picture of Muslim people? Ukrainians are by and large not Muslim, their appearance is quite western looking.

          1. SOQ

Couldn’t care les except if you are going to make an appeal for a certain group of people, it would help if you stuck up a picture that actually looks like them?

        1. Cian

          Why not?
This is the Red Cross ‘generic’ pledge page. It isn’t specific to Ukraine.

Could you not find a tiktok that explains this simple concept?

That post Brexit “global Britain’s” foreign policy – Me, Myself and I
Only 300 visas have been issued out of 8,900 submitted applications – just over 3 per cent . Blame the CTA – of course it always someone else’s fault – nowt to do with parsimonious half pint lying Patel and the Brexit ultras But we don’t understand the terrorist risk from a refugee is so much higher than from a Russian oligarch in the House of Lords who failed security vetting.

We’re giving refugees every assistance sort of actual help.

  4. TenPin Terry

Sorry lads – Blighty is a bit busy with a war at the moment.
Do tune in later today as President Zelensky addresses the UK parliament directly by Zoom in an historic first where he’ll thank Blighty for all their help so far and urge them to do even more.
But you chirp away from a kneeling position and let me know the plan for what you’ll do with 100,000 refugees when you don’t even know what to do with the few thousands already languishing in direct provision.
This is going to be fun.

‘thanks indeed for processing those 50 visas so they can work on fruit farms and thanks again for having one of the lowest sanctions target of the developed countries.
      you guys rock..’

      1. stephen moran

Yeh may the MP’s can all stand at their doorways at 11am every day and give the refugees being turned away in droves at Calais a clap

      2. Mad

That’s ok Scottser we can send them over there by the boatload after we’ve had the pick of the brain surgeons, tennis-playing leggy models, and nuclear physicists. Gotta love that CTA!

Is the pandemic over completely now? Do the migrants need to quarantine? There was a very low uptake on any vaccination program in Ukraine.

    1. Micko

      Yes

      No

Vaccines don’t stop you transmitting Covid. Hence Ireland scrapping all entry requirements.

      Yay!

        1. Micko

Debatable – but let’s all be happy it’s done and dusted.

And hey, you learned something about yourself – something pretty important. ;)

  6. Jo

“Please that these people fleeing war” say America using their phoney war to protect the petrodollar.

2 million refugees, where are the other 42 million Ukrainians?

How are people so gullible after the nonsense of covid?

There is a reason the 1% own everything.

    1. SOQ

I can see the UK’s point on this. If the Russians invade Ukraine, the first group to scatter will be the Nazis.

Of course the obvious question would be that if they are so objectionable, then why support them in the first place?

        1. paul

Russia did invent modern mass-produced anti-semitism* so it’s on-form for them.

*The Protocols of the Elders of Zion

      1. Oro

I’m sorry “if the Russian invade Ukraine” (?) am I on glue or hasn’t this already happened?

Also if they’re so right wing as you say (so not so credible but we’ll allow it for the sake of hypothetical) wouldn’t you be delighted to have more like yourself around the place?

  7. Trustin Judeau

Not only will we be reeling due to increased fuel, wheat and gas prices, but now we have an extra 100k people to house, feed, educate etc – we were already in the midst of the worst housing and homelessness crises the state has ever seen – why not start printing free money while we’re at it

  8. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

the key to any successful immigration is integration and employment IMO, also if you come from a country that does have different norms for females, a few classes in sensitizing the consciousness to that does no harm.
