Former Empire actor Jussie Smollett has been sentenced to 150 days in jail after he was convicted in 2021 on five felony counts of lying to the police.

In January 2019, Smollett, who is Black and gay, said he had been a victim of a racist and homophobic attack in Chicago, though evidence presented in court revealed he staged the attack and then told a false story to law enforcement.

Smollett is sentenced to a total of 30 months of felony probation, in which he will be allowed to travel. He also must pay a fine of $25,000 and more than $120,000 in retribution to the city of Chicago.

“I’m not suicidal, I am innocent. I did not do it, your honor,” Smollett said after the sentence was handed down by Judge James Linn.

Sounds like he might just be stupid enough to kill himself out of spite and is teeing that up as his way out – it was all a grand conspiracy and oh look, I’m dead, just like I warned you…I was right about that and so I was right about being innocent, what a weirdo.

No one knows his story and his struggle besides himself, jailing a man for mental health issues is barbaric.

    1. Nullzero

He wasn’t jailed for having mental health issues.

No surprise what side of this argument you’re on. Logic isn’t welcome wherever you reside.

      1. Boe_Jiden

he very obviously has mental health issues and got himself into difficulty but sure lets just cram another black man into jail

        1. K.Cavan

You’re a psychologist now, Boe? Could you declare yourself insane? I doubt if anyone would object. If you’re not up for that, sure we’ll cram another black man in prison (it’s not jail, I have a black American friend who always pulls me up on that, for some reason, bloody Americans, eh?).
Are there a lot of them in there?
Well, at least Jessie won’t be lonely in prison. Not jail, though ok?

        2. Nullzero

          Got himself into difficulty?

How much of him hiring people to orchestrate a fake racial/homophobic attack which included a noose and a Jerry can of petrol can we attribute to his “mental health issues”?

What he did required clarity of thought and enough mental capacity to carefully instruct others on how to carry out his plan.

In all seriousness Boe, you must be off your head to even consider making the argument you’re making.

He wasn’t sent to prison for having mental health issues or for his skin colour, he has been sent there for very good reasons that have nothing to do with what you’re putting forward.

I could see the argument that his actions weren’t those of someone in their right mind though to my eyes it looks like a fudged attempt at boosting an actor’s profile.

The disproportionate number of black people behind bars is a whole other, and much more real, tragedy.

          1. Bodger

I gather the hoax may have been arranged to promote a proposed bill in the US Congress by Kamala Harris and Corey Booker to ‘classify lynching as a federal hate crime’.

          2. Nigel

I’m going out on a limb here and assuming this is just evidence-free conjecture and free-association, except that it doesn’t even hold together as a conspiracy theory because even a racially motivated mugging wouldn’t be seen as a lynching, while cops shooting unamred black people, which happens all the time in the US, is far closer to what a lynching actually is or was. Can’t believe otherwise intelligent-seeming people fall for this outrageously stupid rubbish.

Why would you even need something like this to classify lynching as a hate crime? Thousands of black men were murdered through lynching in the US, the history of lynching is abominable, but I suppose that’s all CRT now.

          3. Bodger

Around the same time the rally driver found the ‘noose’ in his garage. You remember. We were all taking the knee at the time.

          4. Bodger

I’m sure we’ll all find out soon enough, johnny, I don’t partake of the hooch btw and because of your cranky behaviour, I’m rethinking the long=term benefits of the ‘erb.

          5. ANO

Hadn’t heard that at the time Bodger but some quick Googling shows that it did indeed provoke some of the wackos into fits of nonsense.

Synchronicity being what it is, I see another version of that bill passed in the US only this week.

          6. Bodger

We’ll probably know more with the passage of time. You know how these things tend to work out.

          7. Nigel

We already know the truth, the guy faked a mugging, for reasons that were presumably just not very well thought out. The US right loved it, because it confirmed their deep conviction that everyone claiming to be a victim of racism is lying, and being the US right they attached a racially-motivated conspiracy theory to it, because they absolutely hate being reminded how violent and brutal their racist history is, so they linked a fake present-day incident to real past incidents.

          8. Nullzero

Sorry Nigel but we all know why he faked the attack and it was set up to look to be equal parts racist and homophobic.
There is a lot of capital in victimhood in celebrity circles and he would have dined out on his “bravery” for years.

In the end any rational person can see this for what it is. A narcissistic twerp trying to make personal gains through the peculiar route of fake assault.

The numbers of people who see it as a case than cements their wacky beliefs on either side of the argument are tiny and they’re unlikely to have their opinions changed by anything.

In the end this guy thought he was smart enough to hoodwink the public with his ill conceived plan but it backfired and the positive is that is should stop any potential set up fake scenarios like that ever happening again. The truth is what matters in the end not who benefits from how much truth is disseminated.

          9. Bodger

He was wearing a noose when the police arrived. A ‘modern-day lynching’, it was called by Kamala Harris, Corey Booker and Tim Scott among others.

          10. ANO

While this lad looks to be a bit of a dose, I think you should tread careful and maybe avoid glib comments about the very real threat white supremacist groups represent to people of colour Bodger.

          11. Bodger

Because he might have information that could implicate certain people in the hoax and post hoax shenaigans. He was going to get off at one point.

          12. ANO

For attention? He’s an actor so maybe he’s just naturally overdramatic ?

Maybe, rightly or wrongly, sanely or crazily, he thinks his life is in danger ?

What do you think members of the “Proud Boys” would do if you left them alone in a room with him for an hour and told them they could act consequence free ?

They’d kill him because he’s black, just in case you’re struggling for an answer.

Quick edit after reading Bodger’s post above : I think you’re just having fun with us now!

          13. Commenter #1

Did you use Occam’s razor to come to that conclusion, rather than the alternative explanation that he’s a dimwit making a scene?

          14. Bodger

The Democrat establishment have a thing about snitches, as Seth Rich could testify, were he alive.

          15. Bodger

He’s a little-known actor who is pals with the Obamas, a frequent visitor to the White House and close friends with Kamala Harris, the vice president. What would you say are the chances they helped in the attempt to drop his case in Chicago that time? I would say it’s quite possible.

          16. Nigel

I actually did not know about the noose. I’m guessing there was coke involved.

‘it was called by Kamala Harris, Corey Booker and Tim Scott among others.’

So they got taken in by the hoax. You’ve offered no proof that there was an actual connection.

            ‘Because he might have information’

Speculation and conjecture. People die of suicide in US prisons a lot. He has every reason to suppose his notoriety might make him a target.

‘Sorry Nigel but we all know why he faked the attack’

Sure, and it has nothing to do with the passing of federal legislation.

          17. Nigel

‘perhaps we’ll revisit this in a few days when more information comes to light’

Around the same time the proof that Biden stole the election emerges and Robert Mueller’s reverse ferret goes into effect.

          18. Bodger

All in good time. What part of nothing can stop what is coming are you having difficulty with? It’s a simple concept.

          19. ANO

Bodger, if Harris is a mate of his then it’s certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that she may have tried to assist him in his case – is there any evidence at all to suggest that she did ?

You seem to be suggesting that she might now be involved in a plot to kill him as he was part of her nefarious plan to have an anti-lynching bill passed. Not attacking you personally but that sounds totally bonkers to me.

Would you mind answering my question about the “Proud Boys” ?

          20. Nigel

            ‘as Seth Rich could testify’

Nary a shred of proof. Dead men tell no lies, but you lot sure like putting words in their mouths.

‘What part of nothing can stop what is coming are you having difficulty with?’

The part where it never arrives.

‘What would you say are the chances’

You could say the chances are nigh on unbeatable if you like, still doesn’t matter without actual proof.

      2. K.Cavan

Don’t be mentioing logic, this is someone who took their name from the dumbest SOB to ever wander the corridors of the Whitehouse at night, Nullzero.

    2. K.Cavan

Barbaric, Boe, of course it is but since nobody knows his story, how do you know he had a struggle? You’re Jessie Smollett, aren’t you, Boe? It’s porridge for you now, Boe, you wee Jessie.

      1. Boe_Jiden

you sound manic with all those frustrated replies are you sure your not in some difficulty yourself also nice touch with the I have a Black Friend defence for you’re casual racism

  3. Ian - oG

    ”I’m not suicidal” he said.

Until he faked his ”attack” I had no idea who he was, now I do, I still don’t care.

As for him being suicidal, again, is there some expectation we might care?

Rather bizarre case, he was lucky with 150 days in my opinion.

  4. Commenter #1

“Around the same time the rally driver found the ‘noose’ in his garage. You remember. We were all taking the knee at the time.”

Lol to be fair Bodger I’ve thought for a while that you were committed to the smug, aloof pose to maintain plausible deniability; between linking white supremacists yesterday and this mask off stuff today, it’s pretty clear what your and Broadsheet’s perspective is

    1. Bodger

These are race hate hoaxes. To fan racial disharmony and push agendas. And you have a go at me?

      1. Commenter #1

It’s just good to get you on the record, it happens so infrequently. Taking the knee? Race hate hoax. A black driver discovering a noose hanging in his garage? A race hate hoax.

It’s just nice to get clarity on the Broadsheet perspective, is all

          1. tom2

It was a genuine misunderstanding from the driver and he is absolutely blameless to interpret it as a racial threat. You’re really stretching with that one.

          2. tom2

            B- The noose wasn’t a noose.
B- item as a “garage door pull rope fashioned like a noose.”

            Hmmm.

          3. Commenter #1

Cool! So what about taking the knee was a race hate hoax?

            Now we’re getting somewhere!

      2. Nigel

You have one hoax and one, at worse, mistake. A counter-narrative would be that they are being used to undermine genuine victims of racism, beause that us undeniably what the Jesse Smollet hoax is being used for. Like you just did.

        1. tom2

Exactly. Racial and homophobic attacks happen all the tine so it hardly undermines the issue. I don’t know exactly what Smollet’s motivation was, probably career driven but who cares? It’s one person in isolation.

      3. ANO

You’re ascribing an unproven motive to two totally different situations Bodger.

What’s quite striking about the exchanges in this thread is your apparent refusal to acknowledge the threat faced by people of colour from white supremacist groups like the Proud Boys.

While being a wacky conspiracy theorist can be endearing, tap dancing around things like racism is far less so.

        1. tom2

Here’s an idea for you. You have control here so how about we get a full and comprehensive post from you about what you think is happening in the world now. Trump, covid, BLM, Ukraine. Tie it all together how you see it so that there is no doubt.

          1. Bodger

tom2, Before I take your purity test would it help you to know that I do not believe in the left/right paradigm anymore (covid finishing off the notion entirely)?

          2. tom2

I’m sure you hate tags like fascist and alt right. But please tell me why so many of your views allign with these groups?

          3. Nigel

Well you believe so many right wing conspiracy theories, you’d have to abandon that paradigm or you might have to start thinking of yourself as right wing.
