British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and attendees applaud after Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force in London yesterday

This morning/afternoon.

Russia said parts of a possible peace deal with Ukraine were close to being agreed after Kyiv agreed to discuss military neutrality, raising hopes of an end to conflict.

Via Independent.co.uk:

Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told RBC news that neutrality was being “seriously discussed” along with security guarantees for Ukraine outside of Nato membership.

He said it was his view that certain solutions were “close to agreement”.

Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday said Ukraine should accept it will not be part of Nato, hinting at a concession on a key Russian demand.

Meanwhile a Russian siege at a hospital in Mariupol continued with more than 400 hostages trapped amid heavy artillery fire, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister Iryna Vereshchuk said.

ya can’t believe a word the Russians say though. They tell blatant lies constantly. I wouldn’t draw much hope from anything they say. You should just hear white noise when they talk, because nothing they say can be trusted.

    1. bisted

…what you say Dr may well be true but it is merely speculation…had you said the same thing about the yanks then you would have proof they have always lied…

      1. Dr.Fart

absolutely the yanks lie too. non of the super powers are moral stalwarts. but I wouldn’t excuse the Russians just because the yanks would and have done the same.

also, its not speculation that the Russians lie. They have done it constantly thruout all this. its there for all to see.

    2. K.Cavan

How often do you reckon the media in the West tell you the truth, Mr Fart…?
      1. All the time.
      2. Some of the time.
      3. Rarely
      4. Never.
You have one minute to complete.
Depending on your choice, you will believe lies…
      1. All the time.
      2. Some of the time.
      3. Rarely
      4. Never.

        1. K.Cavan

Rhetoric, jungleman, can be entertaining but yours is not. You’re actually serious!
          Yawn.

      1. Dr.Fart

im not saying “the west” doesn’t lie. And its not a case of “yea well the other side lie to”, thats just childish and irrelevant. Im talking about the Russians and in the context of this war. And they are lying. And if others are lying, that’s irrelevant. Because it’s not what we are talking about.

broadsheet comments sections are the most fertile “whataboutery” grounds on the internet

        1. K.Cavan

It’s not childish & irrelevant Mr Fart. If all sides lie, then saying the Russians lie is, at best, tautology, at worst propaganda by selective exclusion.
          Or simply childish.

          1. Dr.Fart

so I can’t talk about this specific situation, because if I say the Russians are lying.. I’ll have to also note everyone else in the world who also lies? That’s nonsense and you know it, there’s some other reason you’re in here ardently trying to deflect negative comments about Russia. Someone check this guys IP address. “K.Cavan” me hole. Is the K for Kremlin?

          2. SOQ

The new normal- everyone who disagrees with the official narrative must be the enemy.

What you don’t realise is that you have been in training for this mindset over that past two years- all that has changed is the subject matter.

      2. Darrens

The blatant disregard for the interests and integrity of neighbouring states is out of step with eu code of conduct… it’s not about who lies more.. That’s just a distraction… all sides follow their own example

        1. K.Cavan

Remember when the ECB dumped almost half of the debt from the Global Financial Crisis in Europe on Irish taxpayers, Darrens?
Was that ok according to the EU code of conduct?
I have to be honest, I don’t think there is an EU code of conduct, apart from…
          1. Fill yer boots.

          1. bisted

…oh dear Dr…you really have gone down a rabbit hole…let me just repeat…Wikileaks et al displayed the US lies…from their own mouths…talk of Russia is mere speculation…and…after all…they did give Edward Snowden sanctuary…

          2. Darrens

That is not actively crossing a border but of course there is always a margin regard what can be got away with… finance is an invisible crime.. the model of co operation is what facilitates this crime

Hopefully a deal that leads to the end of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine can be reached before too many more innocent people are murdered by his command.

The long term impact of Putin’s actions on life in the West may prove to be significant and perhaps unforeseen by the slap headed warmonger ?

Right now I think there’s a general mood and will to tackle our dependence on Russian resouces even knowing that will require significant sacrifices on our part.

NATO and the EU are going to have some interesting membership applicants in the near future.

    1. K.Cavan

Well, ANO, if you’re prepared to die from hypothermia, fair play to you, I’ll have your ration of oil, if that’s ok. We’ll bury you with honour, well, we’ll bury you, anyway.
Saudi Arabia beheaded almost 50 people in one day, last week. I assume you don’t want any part of that carry-on, either?
      Anyway, hilarious!

      1. ANO

While it can get quite cold here in Dublin I’m fortunate enough to have a roof over my head and warm blankets on my bed so hypothermia is fairly far down my list of even hypothetical worries.

I was going to reference the British PM’s oil begging trip to Saudi in my initial post but decided against it but yes, the West should also be looking at their relationships with the Saudis.

        1. K.Cavan

Forget it, ANO, the behaviour of the Saudis is perfectly acceptable to them, it’s just moral colonialism you’re promoting there, the same bullcrap that The Bush Doctrine used to bring hell on earth to Libya, Syria, Iraq, Egypt & Afghanistan, when The West decided that their systems of government didn’t live up to our expectations.
The West will have its own fish to fry, (or no fish, maybe) over the coming decades, so the rest of the world can relax & watch us sink into a mire of infantile, hysterical, screeching Wokery, as our health services collapse under the volume of vaccine injuries & our welfare states disappear under waves of immigration.
          And smile.
          We won’t be missed.

          1. ANO

I wasn’t advocating any kind of action against the states in question, rather that we alter our own behaviour and make the sacrifices required to address our reliance on them.

Anyway, lighten up, sun’s shining and we’re heading into a four day weekend – this hystericaly woke and vaxxed to the eyeballs fiend is looking forward to disgracing himself on the streets of Dublin along with half-the-country tomorrow.

  3. SOQ

OK I make a few predictions- if I am right I promise not gloat, and if I am wrong then I will have things to learn. Zelenskyy may be getting the encore but money talks- so its probably going to be a bit more balanced than first appears- especially from the UK side.

1, Ukraine will declare itself independent of the two blocks.
    2. A radius of the Bio Labs will be deemed a safe space and independent accessors invited in.
    3. Zelenskyy will either be toppled then off to a nice life in the US or will be nueteralised- by either side.
    4. Azov will be disbanded as the Russians will not accept anything less.

Things which may or may not happen-

Fuel prices continue to rise- high probability.
Exposure of US Political links to Ukrainian companies- medium probability.
Possible connections to the previous US election vote count- low probability.

    Feel free to add.

    1. K.Cavan

Well, SOQ, Biden, Pelosi & Mitt Romney all have sons who work for “Ukrainian Energy Companies”. An astonishing coincidence, just like all the people dying from non-chronic illnesses associated with the fake Covid vaccines, probably. It’s also astonishing because Ukraine isn’t an energy supplier, though there is a ready supply of coke, judging by Zelensky’s recent performances, & they were performances, so I wonder if the other two lads have similar tastes to Hunter Biden, for crack, prostitutes & dirty money?
Maybe they’re just searching for oil in the wheatfields. Yeah, that’s it.
The Azovs, mercenaries & any parts of the Ukrainian Army who won’t disband, will be exiled to Western Ukraine, I believe. There, they’ll find all the arms donated by the Western powers & that area will become a war-torn region on the border with the EU, until they run out of ammo. It will be, eh, interesting.
The Russians will execute Zelensky if they catch him, so I assume he’ll leave Ukraine & continue his acting career, abroad, just for fun, because he has mountains of bribes from the CIA, in a Swiss bank account.
There’s still a chance that The West can pull this one from the fire, if they can just arrange the release of some toxin that might kill huge numbers of civilians & they can point the finger at Russia. That, for The West, would be a glorious Victory. Of course, lots on here will believe it was the Russians!

    1. SOQ

Yes- its going to be won by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

She insisted on having a “lump of sugar” that one of the trainers was feeding his horse you see.

  4. stephen moran

the Russians will be seeking a humiliating Versailles style de militarization of a neutral Ukraine – hard to see them biting on – classic tactics i.e. make an offer you know the other guy cannot possibly accept and then tarnish them for being intransigent and not interested in peace – it will have the square root of -1 to do with unicorn bio-terror

      1. stephen moran

so what do you think the Russians will put on the table then ? Do enlighten us seeing as your always so quick to put others peoples logical thoughts without EVER offering a single idea / suggestion / proposal / off ramp of you own- note I said Russia would default weeks ago which you again rubbished – what is going on as we speak ? So do enlighten us about the peace terms !

        1. Me So Harney

The Russians stance hasn’t changed stepho. Their original offer is still on the table.

          But you already know this.

    1. V aka Frilly Keane

      @Stephen
I don’t think it’s going to be as thought out as all that

I’m betting on the NATO/ EU + whatever Boris is today all hoping it slips down the news producers running order
      And off the front pages

And follow Afghanistan, Palestine, Syria, Yeman into forgot about news stories

I’d say they’d love a earth quake about now
Or the passing of a Biggie. Like the Papa or his opposite – Mrs Windsor

Western leadership are more concerned about the news headlines making them look stupid, and the awkward questions they’re too dim to handle

      Not the real causalities

      1. stephen moran

I respect your POV at least you offered one ! I just can’t see an off ramp for Putin that doesn’t involve a complete capitulation by Ukraine in terms of how he’s going to sell the cost (monetary and physical domestically here – he’s set Russia back a generation – this is not 1999 default situation (as that was only money) – the ship has sailed this time and it’s not coming back in terms of FDI / trade / frozen reserves / pariah status sportingly and artistically for a decade – can you imagine walking into a credit Dept and asking for a line for Russia after this ? – I just can’t see Ukraine wearing what they’d have to swallow to get Putin off the hook after the sacrifice they’ve made in terms of human capital, infrastructure and displacement. I’ll stick with my Versailles Weimar Germany analogy with a demilitarized Rhineland and potential Ruhr occupation if they displease Russia -which Ukraine tell them where to shove.

        1. V aka Frilly Keane

I wasn’t even thinking of VVPs exit strategy
          Only everyone not VVP

          As for himself
From what I’ve absorbed over the last 15 years anyway
Has been 10 steps ahead of everyone

          Maybe not Merkel
          In fairness
But they have so much in common
          As well as shared interests

          But it’s clear without her
The lot of them don’t know how to handle Russia

    2. K.Cavan

OMG, tarnishing? Really, Stephen? I’m sure that’s outlawed under the Geneva Convention, which means that the West are allowed do it but if Russia does it, pearls will be clutched.

    1. ANO

Bodger’s Twitter feed is akin to Arkham Asylum, stuffed to overflowing with every kook and grifter and loon there is to be found and occasionally one of them breaks free to run amok in Gotham…which I guess in this already tortured analogy is Broadsheet…?

      1. K.Cavan

It’s not so much tortured, ANO, as executed.
        You like comics? Manga? Cartoons?
You using your Daddy’s account, again?

    2. K.Cavan

What’s the point of anything, Poo? You don’t mind if I call you Poo, do you? Good.
      What’s the meaning of life?
Death, death is the meaning of life.

    3. Ian - oG

Dunno but she retweets Ian Miles Cheong and Martin Taylor Green, only kneels for Jesus (in her twitter bio), likes bow hunting and supports US vets so right on form for the new alt poo direction Stormsheet.ie has taken.

      1. Bodger

I think you mean Marjorie Taylor Greene. She’s Jewish by the way, so probably not a nazi.

        1. scottser

so jewish people don’t love authoritarian governments, surveillance, propaganda and fantastical belief in their own superiority?
          could have fooled me bud.

        2. Nigel

Probably not, but she is far right, spoke recently at a white supremacist event and is a Qanon believer.

          1. SOQ

jungleman is like a bitter old spinster aunt texting from a gay wedding.

Here is an idea- don’t engage with the broadsheet.ie website.

Move onto somewhere more to your political tastes?

          2. jungleman

“Russia moved to take those labs out as soon as the pandemic was over- join the bloody dots.”

You gonna explain what you meant by the above, SOQ?

    1. K.Cavan

Interestingly, ISIS are back! I do believe we’ll still be dealing with the fallout from the USA’s genocidal Blizkreig assault on Iraq when the Ukrainian conflict is but a dim & distant memory. The people in the hole, where Iraq used to be surely will, anyway.
      That’s revealing, isn’t it?
On the other hand, the 30 years or so of Unipolarity in Geo-politics is now over, thank goodness & people in countries which dare to have governments that differ from the type we have here, in the West, can get on with their lives & stop living in fear of Uncle Sam’s crusise missiles & drones attacks.
I, for one, welcome our new Chinese overlords.

      1. stephen moran

for once we agree – ISIS-K look like they have the bit between their teeth (killed 64 in a Shia mosque suicide bombing the other day in Pakistan targeting the “near enemy”) – key though to remember is for Sunni ISIS is that the real enemy first an foremost are the apostate Shias (takfir) and not the “far enemy” crusader US- this is the fundamental difference between ISIS and al-Qaeda and why they fell out – ISIS operations in the Sahel have also been busy lately

    1. Darrens

It has been interesting to see the reach that certain ‘reads’ have and how easy they are reformed and it is this development.. its speed and often vicious disregard for substance or grounding which means that a wild story lasts longer in the mind… fear of the unknown is the other thing that we know preoccupies the mind… so it is not difficult to see why stories are such conveniently drawn methods for attempting to escape that fear… symbols and badges tend to simplify the forces behind them
