What You’ll Be Wearing Next Season

at

Yikes.

The Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2022 collection from Viktor&Rolf. To wit:

The notion of fear made fashion artists Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren think of the glamorous allure of old Hollywood Dracula movies, where dramatic effects of light and shadow transform reality and create a feeling of alienation and suspense. Dracula symbolised a fear of societal change, one that is prevalent again in today’s world…

Seems reasonable.

Any excuse.

What is it with models they are the most sour pussed lot going…is it something similar to dressing a cat up in clothes, do they just hate what they are wearing.

Is this the Quasimodo collection or are they all just shrugging at the utter idiocy of the fashion industry?

Actually they all look like turtles retreating into their shells. I think they’ve captured the zeitgeist alright.

Third one down is a crime against fashion. It’s they’re aspiring to make these women as unattractive as possible. Hard work, you might think, given that they’re models.

I know the granny look is a thing but did they have to make the models look like they have her spinal osteoarthritis too?

Just for some context (since most of seem to have no clue about how the fashion industry works), Viktor & Rolf (and a lot of the studios) make these more unusual or experimental clothes for their runway shows, these serve as an inspiration point for their clothes that they actually sell, those clothes being much more wearable and with much quieter details. V&R are not expecting their clients to wear these clothes in an everyday fashion. The clothes you see on the runway will only be worn for music videos / red carpets / awards shows / and by lady gaga / daphne Guinness / Roisin Murphy types. Roisin actually wore a lot of their clothes for the photos for her Overpowered album (which if anyone remembers those were amazing images) so it’s a bit redundant and philistine-ish of some of you in the comment section to sit back and make fun of something you frankly have no understanding of. FWIW I have a suit of theirs and it’s very standard shape with some very cool details you only notice up close, but is generally not ostentatious at all.

Or a simpler way of looking at it is that they shove stuff down the runways which will grab headlines.

Vivienne Westwood has been doing this her whole career and yet, she makes most of her money out of business suits and t shirts. Her suits sell on quality- the fabrics and attention to detail are superb.

I’d say that’s a simplistic way of looking at it rather. Some designers do big loud large runway shows as part of their oeuvre but that’s not what the majority of shows are like.

Your remark about Vivienne Westwood (which I agree with to a degree) is exactly the same comment I made which applied to most designers that do outlandish runway shows. That the details are borrowed but the silhouettes made more wearable.

One last thing I’d say is that the runway show is a spectacle, so I’m not sure why people make dismissive remarks when the designers put on a bit of fashion theater.
