Incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orbán (above) has won a fourth consecutive term in office — his fifth in total — after a dominant performance at the polls from his nationalist Fidesz party.
Six opposition parties had rallied their efforts to unseat Orbán behind one candidate, Péter Márki-Zay.
However, on polling day their support faltered and they proved no match for Fidesz which has secured another two-thirds majority in parliament.
With around 91% of votes tallied, Orban’s Fidesz-led coalition had won 53%, while a pro-European opposition coalition, United for Hungary, had just over 34%, according to the National Election Office.

Why did Orban back the sanctions against Russia, I was surprised by that considering his ‘leanings’, can’t imagine it was for the election as it wouldn’t have gone down well with his support base?
I would bet a large amount on the fact that Orban is compromised on multiple fronts.
He clearly has zero ethics or principles, power is all he desires and in that ardour he would be willing to drop his pants for whoever can get him erected, politically speaking.
He wants Hungary to be as neutral as they can, but theyll still have to saddle up and get onboard with most EU wide sanctions.
Nothing wrong with refusing to provide arms to one side in a conflict – at the end of the day he’s putting Hungary #1 and not supplying arms means Hungarians are not a target by either side.
I would agree with some of Davids sentiments above about right wing demagoguery, however this time its a kneejerk response to the few decades past of “its the economy stupid” – the pursuit of profit over quality of life. Populists like Orban are a response to that – simply put, the Hungarians are looking around Europe and the world and saying “Not my f*cking problem”.

This doesn’t surprise me at all- but what bugs me is the way in which some try and nail all of this onto a right/left/liberal spectrum- it is not.
It is a clash of two types of right wing ideologies, namely globalism and nationalism- both of which are just as ‘right wing’ as the other, except in different directions.
One wants get rid of borders while the other wants to strengthen them. Globalism may be more liberal on social issues but, it is also more capitalist than nationalism could ever be.
In my mind it is a choice between Coke Cola and Pepsi- with the understanding that sugar feeds cancer cells- which means you want neither.
I am with you on this one.
