Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien has said up to 8,000 Homes currently vacant because their owners are in the care of nursing homes could be used to house Ukrainian refugees
This morning.
Via Irish Times:
Ministers have been briefed on plans to try to make around 8,000 vacant properties linked to the Fair Deal nursing home scheme available to those fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
One option mooted is that the Government could waive the current requirement under the scheme that 80 per cent of rent receipts for Fair Deal properties be returned to the State, which officials hope could lead to many of these being made available. However, the details of the scheme have yet to be worked out.
The Cabinet also heard yesterday that an emergency summit of builders and accommodation providers is to take place next week as the Coalition seeks to find ways to accommodate the thousands of refugees arriving into the State weekly.
Some 18,628 people have come to Ireland so far, with 11,214 requiring help with accommodation and others staying with friends and relatives.
Coalition spokespeople said only a small number of the 20,000 offers of accommodation received by the Red Cross from the public had yet been taken up.

Meanwhile…
Am I the only one who finds this bizarre, considering the restrictions placed on those who chose not to be vaccinated? You couldn’t eat in a restaurant, but now you can move into someone’s home because your vax status “is a private matter”. Where’s the public health concerns now? pic.twitter.com/MVvZpsVkLm

Anyone?
Meanwhile…
8000 vacant homes belonging to elderly people who went to Nursing Homes are to be used by Govt to house Ukraine refugees overnight
Almost 10k homeless citizens have been told to wait 10 years for the Housing for All 2030 Plan.
Why not house both?

Would you even trust that spud of man Darragh O’Brien to pack a shopping bag without making a mess of it…never mind housing refugees?
you just know it’d be delayed, houses would go ‘missing’, they’d try to lower expectations further down the road and still disappoint and then it’d be held up as a success story around election time.
Granted it’s not a bad idea if we had competent people at the helm, digging deep to find resources we didn’t know were there.
i would be amazed if even half of those 8,000 properties were without building and/or planning problems. or will normal tenancy rules just get turfed out the window, cos ukraine?
So these homes to house Ukrainian refugees
Why not have an exchange programme with Ukraine swap Ukrainians for the Irish homeless
Again we see like the drunk waster in the pub he spends on dole day his money in the pub as his kids wait to get fed at home
They strut around the world like peacocks and ignore our own people at home
It’s time they were exposed on the international stage and shown exactly for what they are
If these successive governments had solved our horrendous housing crises years ago then they could house thousands of these wretches
But now where are they going to put them? In tents family hubs hotels and supposing the person in a nursing home dies ?Evict the poor sod put into the house as the family sell it
Apparently they are talking about 200 thousand to be accepted and we are 1% of the EU population so that’s equivalent of france taking in 2 million 800 thousand
So doing the maths that means europe will be taking more than whole population of Ukraine
And of course with 5 million people living here who is going to foot the bill
I may ask is the EUs plan to use Ireland as a dumping ground for all of mainland Europe’s refugee problem
”It’s time they were exposed on the international stage and shown exactly for what they are.”
Do you really think anybody outside of Ireland cares what they do?
They don’t. They haven’t given a damn about all sorts of far worse things like Palestine and Yemen before now so don’t hold you breath.
I doubt they really give a dam but our governments reputation abroad is one of wonder
They all play the same game, it’s theatre.
Sure, Ian, the Irish are the EU’s best boys in the class. Given that the role of the EU is to bring as much violence, robbery & discrimination as possible down on the heads of Europeans, our government are the best in show, top dogs.
Woof, woof.
Did we ever get the final num bers on the Syrian refugees who came to Ireland?
Afghans, anyone?
And then there’s the Yemeni refugees – I never heard how many of them arrived here. Did you?
Where was the plans to try to make around 8,000 vacant properties linked to the Fair Deal nursing home scheme available to the homeless in Ireland before this?
I am not joking- it is like they are deliberately trying to stir up anti immigrant sentiments now.
jayzus, then some people would stop paying the yanks their vig or rent, you need bodies on the streets man.
I don’t know why more people aren’t saying this. Suddenly, now that there’s a chance to impress the big fellas in the Europe, there’s a will and a way to tackle housing.
It’s a distinct possibility Leo and Mehold Martian will be fighting hard for their seats so this is their chance to secure an EU role.
How many counts last time for Leo before it was called, 5?
6 for the grinning gobshyte Martin.
Now? Who knows but they are already hedging their bets here.
It was a stunning result for Varadker, the only sitting Taoiseach in Irish electoral history not to be elected on the first count.
Linking peoples homes to Harneys Fare Deal? How exactly? Are they linking them as in saying ‘ we will take the homes as payment for your nursing home care so your houses aren’t your own anymore’
Or are they linking the homes in a manner that part of their value, once the person has passed on, will be used to pay for their nursing home care. (Part of it). So do the relations of the now deceased person now have to evict the occupiers in order to gain their inheritance?
Or is it just the usual parish pump sound bite?
Harneys Fare Deal?
Is that a special on sausage rolls or breakfast baps?
Well, the idea that the Irish government give a tinker’s curse for foreign skangers is ludicrous, they hate them almost as much as they hate the native skangers. The function of mass immigration is to create a fractured society, which is what a multicultural society is, making the organisation of a popular resistance to what’s coming down the line impossible.
It also clears the road for Globalism’s eugenics & get in the pod, eat the bugs regime & makes marketing a lot cheaper for Anerican multinationals.
Not so sure, KC, FFFG is probably listening to IBEC.
Listening to the radio recently, I keep hearing ’employers’ saying that they can’t get anyone to work for them.
Jaysus, the Ukranians will be a godsend. And they’re wyte to boot.
They won’t eat many sausage rolls?
hi you must be nana?
im Oleg and im here to help….yes, yes the irish govt sent me:)
its a non starter, quite amusing, but for any number reasons its not going happen.
Maybe ministers that have accommodation in Dublin and houses down the country that I assume could be made available for use could also be utilised as frankly their jobs are in Dublin and they also have a fair deal scheme as their accommodation in Dublin is funded like all fair deal pensioners residing in nursing homes
I assume politicians families would be happier with their spouses and families with them and also save global emissions in the travel needed to commute to where they work?
Absolutely not as the cheek of it all to suggest such a thing
To be honest, apart from during that important speech by that Zelensky chancer, the Dail itself looks to have a lot of spare room, most of the time. It’s like the EU Parliament during Herr Trudeau’s speech.
Anyone thinking of using this scheme needs to be aware that all of the punitive rental legislation still applies:
52% tax on profits
No tax relief on losses
Annual registration with RTB
After 6 months, the Tenant can remain in the property for five and a half years
If a Tenant doesn’t pay rent, you have in effect no recourse
And if they injure themselves in your house you better have landlords insurance.for you will be sued and insurance will not pay out because you did not declare you rented the property
A household insurance dose not cover anyone that is not the home owner and a false declaration is the out clause they need to save paying out
Well, you do know none of the Ukrainians will ever be going home, right? It’s a welcome boost to the Plantation of Éire, we can probably bring the date when the Irish become a minority here forward by a few years.
Every cloud….
Anyway, the way forward is becoming clearer, if you’re not a public servant of some stripe or other, the best thing is to get out, pronto. This place is going under, in double-quick time & apartheid laws against Irish people are just around the corner.
No that’s just you who is a minority pal
Narrator: But in the end, like so much the one term minister and last term as a TD said, this turned out to be utter bullshine.
The End.
This just shows that the government actually can find housing for tens of thousands of people…if they want to.
All of a month to sort all of this out when they’ve had how many years to attempt to fix the housing crisis here and it wasn’t possible to do anything?
Ah, see, the mistake you’re making there, Zaccone, is believing the government were attempting to fix the housing crisis. They’d love to but here’s the rub: Irish birth rates are falling off a cliff yet our population continues to rise, so, the housing crisis is caused by whatever is causing our population to increase. If the government tried to fix the housing crisis they might be accused of being wasscist.
It’s obvious, the government are contributing to the worldwide fight against whiteness by throwing their own citizens under the bus, the train & an electric car or two.
Simple.
Hey ho, hey hey,
no housing crisis solution, no KKK.
Vivienne is a bit of a dope now. I mean, throughout the pandemic her type was going on about how your body’s medical integrity or some crap like that. Now she has a problem with it.
Very kind there Kim, I’d have different words to describe her ilk.
Bodger, what’s the deal with posting up any halfwit with a malformed view of the world and possible acquired brain injuries?
This Viv one is a real prize alright. hahahaha
FFS this place would be quoting Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot if their comments aligned with the conspiracies.
You see, Ian, ad hominem attacks aren’t very effective arguments. It doesn’t matter who’s saying something, all that matters is the integrity of the statement.
If Mao stated that 2+2=4, I’d be the first to declare that Mao is right & I’d be right in stating that Mao is right & anyone who said he was wrong, would be wrong.
See, see the power of a correct statement?
Now you have it. Good lad. Mighty!
It would be a better system if the people condemned to nursing homes were allowed go home and our Ukrainian guests were given the option of moving in and taking care of these older people in their own places. Let’s face it, their own families are not going to do it because they won’t get the house in the will now (and they’d rather spend their time and money on new SUVs and full-length Moncler coats to ponce about in). Win-win.
Now hold your horses there Hughie, have you seen these:
