Throwing A Christian To The Lynn

at

Senator Lynn Ruane

This afternoon.

Via RTE News:

Senator Lynn Ruane accused Senator Sharon Keogan of being “personal” towards witnesses, adding she should “check her Christian values.”

Ms Keogan responded that the committee should not be used as an “echo chamber for one view” and that it should allow space for all perspectives.

Ms Keogan told committee witness Gearoid Kenny Moore, who, with his husband, had twins through surrogacy, that he was “extremely lucky to be here today”.

“Ms Keogan told committee witness Gearoid Kenny Moore, who, with his husband, had twins through surrogacy, that he was “extremely lucky to be here today”.”

    Am I missing something?

            Thank you.

Mad that RTEs article made no mention of any of these comments. The RTE article barely made sense without the below context:

“Independent Senator Sharon Keogan told the witnesses that she “wholeheartedly objects to the commercialisation of the human child and the relegation of women to the status of simply incubator or wombs for hire irrespective of whether you are heterosexual, single, lesbian gay or trans”.

“Surrogacy I believe is harmful, it is exploitative and it is unethical. I don’t believe it is everyone’s right to have a child. It is a privilege to give birth and it can be dangerous even to those with the best medical attention.”

She said she did not want to see the birth mother “airbrushed” or “whitewashed” out of the process.”

Just going on what you’ve posted there, I see no issue. They are valid points.
I would hope the committee have a few or have attempted to speak with as many surrogates as possible, more so than simply those looking for the service of surrogacy… I somehow doubt it.

Maybe, just how delicate society is; or maybe the article is not being clear on the want and will of many to be offended and then of course stand on their soap box and let the world see how offended they are.

One can no longer be frank and honest with their views as there are so many willing and wanting offence.

if the comment about being ‘lucky’ came with no baggage, it could be agreed with. A lot of people have only relatively recently been able to avail of services due to the Catholic Church and it’s shadow on the state. It’s lucky that people like Gearoid were born now when these rights are available to him and not a few decades ago. But people shouldn’t be able to avail of these services because of luck, they should be able to avail of them as they are people.

As it stands, the ‘lucky’ comment may have come with baggage, Sharon Keogan’s history of being dodgy on LGBT rights. Lynn Ruane may have detected a snipe from Keogan directed at Gearoid eg. ‘Gearoid is lucky he got a baby and not a prison sentence’.

That’s just one reading and one based on very little information. Politicians rarely own their own comments so we’re unlikely to find out more unless Keogan doubles down.

Perhaps you should read the rest of the article.
The senator was using the committee to soap box her views rather than listen to the witness statements with a view to constructing a legislative framework for surrogacy.
He opinion is that not everyone should have children. And that she doesnt agree with surrogacy at all. Going on to say she didnt want the birth mother airbrushed out of the picture. IF only she wasnt part of a committee that can put forward recommendations around this sort of thing. Instead its ban surrogacy altogether.
Theres are real bang of the typical Irish religious attitude of sticking the head in the sand and exporting things they dont agree with.
It is entirely reasonable also to bring up her anti LGBT stance as many of the witnesses were LGBT groups. But of course bodger left all that stuff out.

Children BOUGHT through surrogacy. It’s absolutely extraordinary the airbrushing around this subject in Ireland. Paying someone else to give birth to a child for you IS EXPLOITATION and shouldn’t be allowed and isn’t allowed for very good reason. It has nothing to do with your sexual orientation.
Given our history i this country it is absolutely shameful how little honesty there is around this subject.
You can’t always get what you want in life, get over it.

The money involved isn’t much different to adoption where the woman or girl who gave birth gets nothing amd all the fees going to agencies. At least with surrogacy it’s a more honest transaction, all in front of you, listing who gets what.

      1. Termagant

It’s very different to adoption. That child already exists and is unwanted or unsustainable, the adoption process is doing the mother as much a service as the people who end up adopting the child. The child in surrogacy is being conceived directly and deliberately for monetary reward, it’s an explicit contractual womb-for-cash transaction. It’s a huge difference.

I had a discussion with the missis a few years ago on this very topic. She wanted to volunteer to be a surrogate to her cousin who had ovarian cancer and was throwing away a fortune on ivf in the hope they could have a child. I thought my missis was incredibly brave and selfless and of course I would support her if that’s what she wanted to do.
So it’s not all about the cash. Its not even about who gets to have kids. It’s about supporting whoever wants to have a family to have one, fairly and free from judgemental ladypartbags.

Look at you. Quite the modern slave trader. It’s a transaction. For a human (or should that be a cluster of cells).

With a full list of what you get. Is there a refund policy if it doesn’t work out or can you upgrade later ?

    1. Darrens

Your tasteless response and name suggest you are upset by the conversation .. probably for me the value is actually to highlight that place of discomfort. As a nation we come from a very confused practice of what is valuable and how is that value arrived at. Your comparison made to standard upgrade packages and refund policy which both shape our experience of the consumer offer very effectively outline how hard it is to separate one experience from another without applying a degree of compassion for those whose lives it concerns. Once you do that the matter is no longer so similar.

Ah yes, Ruane. Another rotten burrough TCD senator unelectable by any other means besides the Trinity Students Union. And Sara is correct. Ruane WAS at the Zappone event but would not admit it. Shut down her social media accounts instead for a while. Ladypartbagger.

Never been a fan of surrogacy
It sort of reminds me of Ireland in the 50s
Now they just jet off to baby factories abroad
In Mexico and Thailand it’s now outlawed and it’s all big bucks
