BBC’s Tonight show
A relaxed Brendan Behan in conversation with English actor and presenter Derek Hart. The latter going full plummy.

Any excuse.

“the Bells of Hell
go ding-a-ling-a-ling…”
What does Behan say at 5:10?
“A votre service, mon vieux”?
or “C’est la vie, mon vieux”?
Anyone?
That was brilliant!!!!
Wasn’t it just!
This is what Broadsheet always meant to me, these golden moments thrown at us out of the blue.
+1
Jazzy new default avatars all round I see! What a time to be alive.
Let joy be unconfined;
they don’t show on Android though?
I can’t see them either
absolutely !
Behan was true to himself in that interview, and he added that he didn’t like interviews.
Real stuff.
A product of genius
I suppose if he was born in a country that cared for its poor and its working class maybe his genius would never of shone
They say the greats of the arts have to suffer if not gay being poor or marginalised and with their suffering at the hands of the state pure magic was born
And for the size of our nation so many greats were born
Now there’s a great conversation starter over a few cold drinks and plenty of time.
Have often wondered about same though Thomas Grey’s “Elegy Written a Country Churchyard” may present a counter view:-
“But Knowledge to their eyes her ample page
Rich with the spoils of time did ne’er unroll;
Chill Penury repress’d their noble rage,
And froze the genial current of the soul.”
If I ever had a dinner party and could invite anyone
It would be Brendan Bethan Richard Harris spike Milligan and Peter o‘toole
That would be some night
How many seats does your hypothetical table have? I agree with the three you’ve chosen but could you not find a few more seats for David Lynch, Jack Nicholson, John Malkovich or Nietzsche?
A pinker in the rye.
Hiya handsome, how’re ya Holden up?
… sorry, four, but I suppose Richard Harris and Peter O’ Toole could be classed as one because they were were very close friends for many years :)
Oh yea, Robert De Niro as well!
Brendan Behan: A Life by Michael O’Sullivan’s is a great read.
P.S. Thanks BS for the purple avatar again – I think I mentioned the same appreciation a few years ago although I’ll say one thing, I never have a downtrodden mouth or spaced eyes, or straight eyebrows!
In fact…
He was an earthy man, and his intelligence and sensitivity is beautiful – not to mention his wit.
Comments seem to be posted upside down and out of context tonight. No bother.
Looks like he’s been on the batter for a fortnight.
