“It’s Not Our Land, Never Was Our Land”

at

This afternoon.

Sinn Fein president Mary Louy McDonald described the proposed ownership structure as “convoluted and messy” and contended that it enabled the Saint Vincent’s Hospital Group to use the value of the land as “leverage” for future financial transactions.

The Sinn Féin leader said the leasing agreement for 299 years “does not amount to public ownership”.

In reply, the Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that suggesting a 299 year lease does not equate to State ownership is “being dishonest”, adding: “There is only so much nonsense that can be accommodated here.”

He added:

“It’s not our land, never was our land, it’s a gift essentially at a tenner a year for 300 years…”

A tenner a year for 300 years until the hospital does something the nuns don’t like, then it’s €850,000 a year.

It really is that simple…who in their right mind would enter into a deal like that?

it’s placing a hand on the necks of people requiring the care of the hospital and hoping the hand doesn’t squeeze. A hand that has history of exacting a terrible toll on those beneath it. Dreadful.

that’s such a good way of putting it,
chop off the hand I say

This is one of those moments we’ll be looking back at in 20 years and the powers that be will be saying “oh no, how did we not see this coming”

      -_-

      Fact is remember ground rents
The landlord owns the land and one day the debt is discharged even if you refuse to pay it
When the house is sold plus interest
The state dose not own that land it is a tenant of the land and subject to its landlord
So handing an asset we are paying for to them
I would far rather burn the money
The state has the right to CPO that land and the church cannot do a god dam thing about it
That order also are guilty for crimes against our children
Strip them of the whole hospital campus and CPO it
If they want their hospital they can remove it brick by brick at their own expense

The lease where I live is for 999 years. 299 seems very short term in comparison.

unfortunately a CPO can be challenged and be defeated and there are plenty of avenues for it to be meddled with, delayed and post-poned. I wouldn’t be surprised if the church has the know-how to pull of such a stunt. I’d be all for taking the land if it didn’t throw up a few decades of red tape and bullsh t.

I’d be more in favour of leaning* on the church to give up the land but that would never happen with Fianna Fail hanging around like a bad smell.

*as a cost of being able to operate tax-free in Ireland, surrender all lands where the churches interest intersects with public interest (schools, hospitals etc) and all unused land held by the church to be sold to fund reparations for families damaged by members of the church. That would be a good start.

A CPO is a tool to compulsory purchase
          Everything can be challenged
          It’s just a cop out
Sure the state you stop us all working and keep us under lockdown and you tell me they have not the power to CPO
The state can do anything it wants when it suits them

A CPO (rightly) wouldn’t succeed. Judges will just tell Government to cop themselves on and either a) build somewhere else, b) buy part of the massive golf course next door or c) come to an arrangement with the landowner.

You’d wonder what exactly is going on…they seem to be intent on continually reloading the shotgun and shooting themselves in the foot as many times as possible.

  3. CJ

Wouldn’t you love to have that level of commitment from the leader of the country to equate leasing with ownership, on your behalf.

  4. Kin

This must be prevented full stop
    Time another site is taken
The day they lay the first brick must be prevented
    It’s perverse and evil

The FF leader lying directly to our faces.

Reminds me of his “the banks weren’t bailed out” statement.

They seem seriously spooked by this furore, to the point of telling outright lies.
