Hurting You To Hurt Russia

at

Taoiseach Micheál Martin with Thomas Byrne, junior minister for European Affairs In Brussels, Belgium this morning

This morning.

Via RTE News:

Arriving at the second day of an EU summit in Brussels, Mr Martin warned of “rocky territory” in the coming years when it comes to high energy prices.

This was due to a confluence of factors, such as climate change, the war in Ukraine and the EU’s strategic plans to wean Europe off Russian oil and gas, known as RePowerEU.

“We are at a watershed moment in terms of the European Union’s dependency on Russian oil and gas,” the Taoiseach told reporters.

“RePowerEU will bring about a more sustained and fundamental break with that dependency on oil and gas.

“If you dovetail that with our climate change agenda it is a watershed moment for fossil fuels in general, which will make for fairly rocky territory over the next couple of years in terms of pricing around fossil fuels.

“We cannot get away from that,”

The alternative is killing the planet or giving money to a literal nazi state, high energy costs are a small price to pay

    1. SOQ

They are giving money to a literal Nazi state- it is called Ukraine.

What else could you call a place where one year before the war started they closed all opposition news outlets- then published a list of ‘undesirables’ who subsequently got taken out one by one?

      1. The Nigel Account

Ukraine is not a Nazi state. After all, your highly selective description perfectly matches Russia – is Russia a Nazi state?

        1. Kin

Believe me I have Jewish friends that have warned me not to go to Ukraine as it is a pretty antiemetic place
Bit like a black guy holidaying in the Deep South of the good old USA
          READ HISTORY NIGEL BACKSTOP BOY

          1. The Nigel Account

Ukraine isn’t a Nazi state. It’ll be way more of a fascist state with Russia in charge, though.

      2. Kin

        Watching CNN news
According to french news services lavrov was asked regarding annexing the captured areas of Ukraine
He replied there is going to be no annexing by russia
He stated it will be by the will of those living in the area of these republics
So it looks like they are going to withdraw the army and these self proclaimed areas will decide their future under the protection of russia
It’s a nightmare position for the Kiev regime of zelensky and I assume the worst feat of the west Ukrainian people

    2. K. Cavan

You chose your moniker well, Boe, you talk almost as much rubbish as your near-namesake, Joe. We are not facing “high energy costs” we are facing energy prices increasing by up to 2,000%, literally a doomsday scenario for Europe.

    3. Kin

All that carbon tax the new source of revenue to fuel the waste of government
What ever our country dose is irellavent
      It’s China
      India
      The USA
The industrialised heart of europe and the UK
WE COULD LIVE WITHOUT LIGHTS HEAT INDUSTRY
get rid of farming and be ————carbon neutral and it’s pointless
Notice as mehole opens his mouth he flew to that meeting instead of travelling by bus or even walked
And I bet the global emissions from all those ministers attending was equivalent to a years emissions of 200 people
Why did they not have the meeting by video link
They did it during covid 19
Bunch a tax grabbing low lives

      1. The Nigel Account

They’re centre right. They don’t like taxes, they prefer public services not be funded but rather privatised.

  2. SOQ

“We are at a watershed moment in terms of the European Union’s dependency on Russian oil and gas,” the Taoiseach told reporters.

Translation: the EU imposed stupid sanctions and you have to pay.

    1. Kin

Meanwhile as every nation scaambles for oil and gas our kinsale gas field remains capped
And in the eastern mediterainian a vast field of oil and gas was discovered
Israel and Turkey are already drilling for it as is Egypt and Greece is another nation who asked the EU for help in protecting Greek waters as Turkey was expanding its claim to the riches
Already Egypt is pumping it out and it’s a massive find

      1. Kin

Just was listening to the FF plonker minister for European affairs with the **rd sandwich being prepared for us
He mentioned that certain states in Europe cannot refine oil from other countries due to they are set up to process Russian oil and in order to get away from it is to build new refineries
What a strange comment and low and behold one cannot find any article pointing this out
So he either is so gullible or he is coming out with outright lies
Mehole just got his orders and these new sanctions are going to really hurt us and Russia is laughing all the way to the bank
Numerous times he was asked to quantify the pain the Russians are going to feel and he could not
So the EU plans in shooting its self in the foot and making its population pay for a war that was started by politicians and NATO with zelensky poking the Russian monster

          1. Me So Harney

Did 8 years of Kiev shelling murder 30000 innocent ethnic Russian speaking Ukrainians living in the donbass?

        1. Mad

          I’ll have a pint
          No, a short
          No,
          No,

          A
          Mineral

Ah here can I just have a glass of water?

      2. SOQ

It is like the leadership of the EU is so detached from those who elected them they are committing Hari Kari on behalf of the most nazified country in Europe- and we are all supposed cheer along, and wave flags- one in particular.

If not a reverse turn pretty soon, this will be the end of the EU. Extraordinary stuff- but with such idiots at the helm, maybe it is for the best.

        1. The Nigel Account

They’re opposing military expansionism by a neighbouring rogue state and belatedly divesting them of a massive hold it has over them.

          1. Me So Harney

By shelling donbass for the previous 8 years killing 30,000 Ukrainians.

Zelensky has killed far more Ukrainians than Putin.

          2. SOQ

They are at it right now- Donbass civilian areas in particular- which is the opposite of a half decent military.

But sure ‘The Nigel Account’ is happy sailing along on the spectrum.

          3. The Nigel Account

In the conflict started by Putin and carried out by Russian-backed seperatists? Sounds like if Putin hadn’t interfered nobody would have died.

‘They are at it right now’

Astonishing. Ukrainians are shelling the Donbas area – the minor detail of the invading Russian army is omitted, just as the Russian-backed seperatists are omitted from the previous 14 years.

          4. The Nigel Account

How naive of me to think that Putin supporting a violent serperatist movement and then invading might be significant.

          5. The Nigel Account

What gave you that idea? What does it have to do with Putin’s ambitions for Ukraine? Why are you always changing the subject?

    2. Kin

SOQ an even bigger watershed moment was when oil and gas was found in east med sea
And it was massive Egypt is pumping it out Turkey is drilling and so is israel
But because Greece has a slice of the action for some reason the EU IS DOING NOTHING about even sourcing that
Apparently Greece could supply from that field all of Europes needs at a pretty cheap price
Meanwhile the EU is content on fleecing it’s own citizens
Fact is this winter we are all going to see what the UK saw before thatcher with energy rationing and a three day week

  3. The Nigel Account

We’ve been walking wide-eyed and whistling into this crisis for decades – there’s no conspiracy, just a powerful fossil fuel lobby that reaps profits while the world burns and democratic states are dependant on tyrannies for energy.

    1. Mr .T

I agree – however the alternatives simply aren’t there yet.
The level of storage required to ensure renewables can cope with the big lulls in their generation (high pressure winter – no wind no sun), that level of storage doesnt exist at grid scale yet. We need gas backups until hydrogen or something else proves viable.

We should be tapping our own fields like Barryroe in the interim to fuel the “transition” rather than being reliant on Norway and UK – their gas will demand an increasing premium as all of EU tries to shift over to it.

      1. The Nigel Account

The alternatives could have been here if the warnings had been heeded – that’s why we’re caught short, predatory delay, corporate capture. It’s never the right time, but now time is forcing it upon us.

    2. bisted

…how’s sleepy Joes fracted gas going Nigel?

*thanks MrT…transition…that’s the word I was searching for…even the greens are using it now…

      1. The Nigel Account

I’m sorry, am I wrong about something or are you just repeating stuff randomly?

        1. Chris

“am I wrong about something” repeatedly. If you were actually right about something for once it would make for a refreshing change.

          1. The Nigel Account

If I were wrng about something you’d be able to show, rather than tell.

        2. bisted

…ah Nigel…did I spell fracking wrong…you above all people should know about sleepy Joes pledge to supply tankers to Europe to help them wean off the terrible Russian stuff…you know the fracked stuff which makes it the most controversial of all fossil fuels…

          1. The Nigel Account

Yes, what about it? The fossil fuel industry is scrambling desperately to find and push alternaitve sources of energy – so long as they’re still fossil fuel sources.

          2. bisted

…yep…transition is the word…Eamon blahblahblah Ryan has used it several times already…hope the Greta generation eviscotate him…how dare he use green as his flag of convenience…

          3. Nigel

‘Transition’ is a term relating to switching from fossil fuels that’s been around for at least ten years.

          4. bisted

…’transition’…as you well know Nigel…has been appropriated to mean the exact opposite…there will be no reduction in production of greenhouse gases during the brave greens in government…instead…they will increase in Ireland…Eamo will justify this as transition…but hey…he gave us green tax…yippee…

          5. The Nigel Account

No it hasn’t. Again the Greens are a tiny part of a coailition with anti-environment parties. But the people voted for those parties, unfortunately. Thought you liked democarcy?

          6. bisted

…love democracy…in fact, I’d rather have a flawed democracy than a benevolent dictatorship…what I really hate is people going on doorsteps and lying like the greens did..they will not get the chance to dupe people again…

          7. The Nigel Account

No, what you can’t stand is that they didn’t maintain a kind of useless purity by staying out of government, but went in in order to acheive what they could, however limited.

          8. SOQ

Most would be happy if like the Millie account which claimed to live in the proximity of Dr Marcus de Brun- and you- would take yourself somewhere else?

Why do you think this Irish site is your property?

          9. The Nigel Account

Not sure you speak for as many commenters or readers as you seem to think, but even if you did, so what? Also, I’m not the one trying to chase people off land you seems to think belongs to you.

          10. The Nigel Account

Why do you keep trying to chase people off this Irish website? Do you think it’s YOUR property?

      2. Kin

Sure his fracked gas is winging it’s way over to Lithuania to replace russias supply
The biggest laugh is the EU say they will be able to replace all Russian gas and oil by the end of the year
Meanwhile it will take years to build the infrastructure
Get ready for power cuts this winter all over Europe and Ukraine the **rd sandwich they are going to be fed pushed down their throats by NATO and the EU is not going to go down well
This war could of been avoided by the west wanted it now we the citizens all over Europe are paying big time for our leaders disastrous poking the Russian bear

          1. The Nigel Account

Oh, sorry, Biden invaded Ukraine with the US army disguised as Russians and deepfake Putin giving speeches.

          2. Me So Harney

It was Putin that made Victoria Nuland order a coup detat in Ukraine in 2014..

    3. K. Cavan

“The world burns”, what utter nonsense you talk, child. Anyone with eyes can see that the oft-promised climate emergency is forever arriving.
“Climate Scientists” have a 100% record with their predictions, they have been wrong, every single time. By this year, 2 years ago, 5 years ago, a decade ago, a quarter century ago, we were to face huge changes in weather systems, temperatures & sea levels & none of it has materialised.
How often do people have to get it wrong before their credibility evaporates?
When the Ecology Movement started, it was run by genuine nature lovers but within a decade it was taken over by the Political Left, to be used as a weapon against Capitalism & now, the board of Greenpeace, once made up entirely of Biologists, Meteorologists & the like, contains not a single scientist, just unqualified activists who haven’t even got enough scientific knowledge to read & interpret the “reports” on which they claim to base their wildly inaccurate predictions.
Worse still, this CO2 delusion has been hyped, financed & promoted to such prominence that it’s running cover for the rape of the planet, the destruction of ecosystems & the poisoning of our land & water, to benefit the wealthiest human beings that have ever existed, who merely have to trumpet their “Carbon Neutrality” to be allowed continue with laying waste to Our Environment, for money.
A few years back, Microsoft announced its plans to become the first “Carbon Negative” corporation, achieved of course by buying pieces of paper called Carbon Credits, which exceeded their actual carbon footprint. Two months later, they withdrew support for Windows 7, causing millions of perfectly functional PCs to be scrapped, creating billions of tons of toxic landfill for no reason other than selling more PCs & operating systems, in order to makes Bill Gates more disgustingly rich than he already was.
In reality, CO2 isn’t even in the top ten of environmental problems facing humanity but the others impede profit-making, while the Carbon Con facilitates it, though all have one thing in common, they are driven by the desire for profits, rather than the needs of humanity.

      1. The Nigel Account

I’m sorry I can’t hear you over the sounds of temperature records being broken every month, widlfires raging, duststorms blowing, people starving from massive droughts, enormous flash floods devastating cities and towns, ice caps melting, warmer seas intensifying hurricanes, and heatwaves worsening. Did you say something?

        1. Micko

          Poor form Nigel

People take on your points and debate them with you all the time.

You could at least take on KCavan arguments instead of deflecting them

That Microsoft one seems particularly salient.

  4. Ian - oG

Terrible shame they didn’t see this coming a long time ago.

Oh they did? Really? And did precisely what about it? Nothing?

Listening to this Monty Burns looking entity waffling on about our wind making us some sort of Saudi Arape-ia was painfully hilarious.

  5. Jo

This was well flagged by conspiracy theorists.

Now the left agrees whole heartedly this is the right course of action.

How can people believe this nonsense?

  6. dhaughton99

2 days of going without gas and electricity and we’d have blood on the streets.

    1. Kin

      Dhaughton99
This is going to happen this winter
I remember living in the UK in the days of the three day week
The people adapted but when the elections came about along came thatcher

  7. K. Cavan

These sanctions will come into operation in 8 months time, by then it’s “expected” that every European country will have somehow sourced energy from somewhere other than the most natural, least economically & environmentally damaging source, Russia, so as to virtue signal our support for a violent, corrupt & illigitimate military dictatorship, in a country that, while under US control, has been used to launder dirty money, create illegal, deadly bio-weapons & export babies, all while Washington financed & nurtured fully-fledged, genocidal Nazism & high-ranking American politicians, including their President, pocketed bribes from the Oligarchs who profit from the misery of ordinary Ukrainians & who now spill their blood in a pointless, unwinnable war.
Von der Layen & Michel have been thoroughly out-thought & out-manouvered by Russia, their puerile & impotent rage is palpable, stripping away whatever layers of leadership abilitiy they might’ve been able to project previously, via a dumbed-down & supine media & laying bare the fact that, in the EU, failing to the top has become commonplace. There is not a single competent politician in Brussels, just a bunch of serial losers, placemen who gained their positions through susceptibility to the influence of the money-men who control them. The EU will not survive long if von der Layen’s plans to take away the jobs, the freedoms, the health & the future of millions of Europeans, while attempting to freeze & starve them to death, are not discarded.
The current leadership of the West is patently, visibly, almost comically incompetent, not to mention irrational & arrogant & incapable or unwilling to even put the slightest effort into dealing with the real life problems of inflation, food & fuel insecurity, unsustainable illegal immigration & homelessness, to name a few, that blight the lives of millions of ordinary Europeans, right now.
They must go, Biden, Harris, VD Layen, Michel, Varadker, Martin, Johnson, Scholz, Macron, this bunch of clowns must be removed, if we are to have any future for ourselves & our children.
Clear Them Out! Lock Them Up!

    1. Bojo Baggins

Spot on, some fools in Ireland. You’re not one of them. So sad to see so many lead around by the nose by such sad idiots.

  8. Termagant

They wouldn’t be doing it if they didn’t know that the people they claim to represent can do absolutely nothing to shift them out of power. Accountability matters and there is none whatsoever in the EU. I wonder how fuel costs in the UK are going to compare over the next 6 months or so?

  9. Ian - oG

Mehole looks like he has an afro tied back with a headband in that picture in the tweet above.

Do yiz remember when the PC saved the USA economy the last time. The anglosphere got to ride that tide, all boats rising etc. Now they are trying another tide the green tech one. Must ask Sri Lanka how that’s going as a little island nation. Had a great chat with a Hungarian tradesman in the house recently. He loves his Orban. Our consensus is that the EU states are only satellites of the USA. They will all go down with that ship when it sinks. I have seen some raw footage of these Russian thermobaric weapons on Indonesian TV. FUP me carnage! Our boys would only be toast is such an arena .

Martin now dancing upon the corpse of the social contract which he and the rest of them delivered a fatal blow to back in 2020.
