40,000 Ukrainian refugees in hotels and B+Bs and counting.
    They’ve gotta go somewhere.
Throw in lack of supply and post-pandemic surge in demand and it’s the perfect storm chivvied along by good old-fashioned gouging.

    1. SOQ

Who is paying for this 40,000 Ukrainian refugees in hotels and B+Bs?

I assume there is some sort of EU fund being drawn down from? If so, how much PP and who is doing the drawing?

As they always say- follow the money.

        1. Barry

On May 18th there were 18,000 Ukrainian refugees were in state accommodation so I don’t think you’ve got your facts right. and not all of those are in hotels.

          1. Barry

On the tenth of May 28,531 Ukrainians had come to Ireland and 13,150 of those were in hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs.

          2. TenPin Terry

Statistics from the Department of Children in May showed that in addition to the 29,000 people fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there have been 3,353 asylum applications in the first four months of 2022; In the whole of last year, there were 2,649 applications.
Ukrainian arrivals are still averaging 2,000 a week and all have to be housed in hotels & B+Bs.
Don’t fall for the spin you silly oaf.

          3. Barry

There are various forms of accommodation being offered. Stop making things up so you can be racist.

          4. K.Cavan

The details might be hard to come by, Barry but SOQ & Terry both have their facts right. One fact is that there are no sources for these details that do not have an overt political position on Ukrainian immigrants, who are not refugees.

          5. Kin

Barry’s all hotels all around Ireland have refugees
Problem is no rooms for tourists
Without revenue in rural Ireland from tourists rural Ireland will die
Next year I doubt there will be a toilet open next year

        2. SOQ

So why so many? They are being invited in surely? By whom?

Why is the country with the worse housing crisis in Europe taking in such a disproportionate number? It’s not fair on the natives, and it is not fair on the refugees either.

          1. Barry

            The government is inviting them.

Hungary has taken in 654,664 and has a population of a about 4 times ours.

          2. TenPin Terry

            Good questions old sport.
I’ve been asking them on here for weeks but the Usual Simpletons simply shout ” waycist and wot about Bowis and Bwexit “.
And the fawning Irish media won’t ask how much, how long and who’s paying for it.
            ‘Twas ever thus™
They have you by the gonads.

          3. SOQ

@ Barry- is there a table of ‘per country’ somewhere?

Per head we are certainly way above both UK and France.

          4. K.Cavan

Barry, Hungary shares a land border with Ukraine, Ireland isn’t even part of the same land mass, not to mention the fact that Hungary has a government that considers the welfare of it’s own population to be a priority, unlike ours & the Ukrainian population includes large numbers of ethnic Hungarians.

          5. Kin

The EU is telling our government to take them and they are
            Time we left the EU
HOPEFULLY THE BRITS WILL STAND THEIR GROUND and of course do our people a bloody favour by making our politicians to go to the EU and tell them brexit is making it impossible to stay in the EU
WE WILL NO LONGER BE USED AS A BATTERING RAM AGAINST THE UK
That’s the message mehole needs to deliver to them
Not stand their like a cuckold wimp as his wife is screwed

        3. TenPin Terry

And remember there will be 300,000 new PPS numbers issued in 2022.
The majority to non-Irish and a majority of them not Ukrainian.
          Good luck with that.

          1. Barry

More arse-dripping statistics from you. What’s you source?

Net migration was 34,000 in 2019.

          2. TenPin Terry

The Department of Social Protection responded to a request for stats from those good people at Gript.
The total number of new PPS numbers issued in 2022 to Ukrainians to May 22 was 33,151.
The total of new PPS numbers issued between January 1 and May 31 was 129,634. Of these, 25,458 were accounted for by newly registered births.
In 2021, there were 174,525 new PPS numbers issued of which almost 60% went to people of other than Irish nationality. The numbers of new issues to Irish people has steadily declined; from 81,331 in 2012 to 70,822 in 2021. What is also noticeable of course is that the overall number of new issues for the first five months of this year is on course to significantly surpass earlier years.

The number of new issues for 2022 is set to surpass 300,000. Indeed, that is likely to be even greater given the forecasts of not only tens of thousands more people from Ukraine, but with 40,000 new work permits already in the pipeline. In tandem with that is an evident increase in the numbers of people coming here from countries other than Ukraine to claim asylum.

To the end of May, 16,280 new work permits were issued. That compares to 16,275 for the whole of 2021. Similarly, the number of people who are listed by the International Protection Office as having sought asylum in Ireland between January 1 this year and March 31 was 2,182. That compares to a total of 2,649 for the 12 months of 2021.

Is that enough stats for you ?

            https://gript.ie/almost-77-of-new-pps-numbers-to-those-other-than-irish-nationality/

          3. Fearganainm

Straight to your favourite former IRA man turned dissident for your information again, eh?

Any chance you could rent out a lock-up garage somewhere in London for some lads who want to store a few hundred sacks of fertiliser? Just to take advantage of the soaring prices, like? And if you could hire an Iveco Eurocargo 7.5 tonne box van to help with the deliveries that’d be great.

          4. Barry

No it isn’t good enough for me. Unless Putin is going to invade Ukraine again in the second half of the year. John Mc Guirk’s little website isn’t good enough for anyone.

    2. Kin

Yep government has agreed to take in 200 thousand and france thirteen times our size takes in half
They have been told by our masters
Sad thing is broadsheet is going to shut down and a place for free speech popular or otherwise is now gone
      I feel sorry for Bodger
Strange other forms like the conversation is being seriously censored and abc news has shut down its comments in the USA because it dose question the narrative
Talk about Russia China Iran and North Korea
The Irish media the British media and the US media are nothing more than propaganda

  2. Jonner

obviously more hotels needed, but if our labour resources build those, who is gonna build all the houses?

    1. Broadbag

The Ukrainians! There’s a labour shortage, particularly in hospitality, hopefully some of these new arrivals will step in and fill some gaps.

      1. SOQ

Problem is- the ones who have left are the ones who could afford to leave, meaning the professional classes- the poor were left behind. They are not the sort to be working in the nursing care sector or serving lunches on minimum wage, even if they do stay.

And besides, irrespective of nationality, if people cannot afford to work in the cities because of sky rocketing costs as it is, how would Ukrainians be expected to do so either?

        1. Barry

Sure they can’t believe their luck. I wish my country was destroyed by an ethno-nationalist.

          1. K.Cavan

Sorry, Barry, Globalists have dibs on destroying your country. Still, they’re doing a damn fine job.

          2. K.Cavan

Fine rhetoric from Nigel, would almost make you forget the CIA overthrowing not one but two democratically elected governments, in Ukraine, that is, NATO training Nazis to genocide the people of Donbas, as well as supplying them with all the civilian-killing weapons & ammo they needed, the makeup of the next government being decided by the US Ambassador to Ukraine & the US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, the son of the US President accepting bribes from Ukrainian corporations, etc, etc, etc…
            Almost.
Nigel, himself, of course denies all of these facts, preferring that the ”Putin Is A Madman” narrative gets delivered to the Proles, he doesn’t actually believe it himself.

          3. The Nigel Account

Amazing how the CIA overthrew Ukraine without firing a shot, but Russia can’t do it with a whole army.

Sigh. I’ll miss you most of all Li’l Wee Wee Kavan.

      2. K.Cavan

That’s right, Broadbag, our boss class can exploit these immigrants with below-living wages, so that’s ”great for the economy”, if you’re so myopic that you consider Ireland merely as an economy. Granted that’s about as far as the ”vision” of our political class extends but they see it as a Ponzi Scheme economy, exploitative, socially immobile & of very little benefit to the vast majority of citizens. In a period where about 120,000 immigrants entered the country, 106,000 emigrants left it. A country that can’t provide jobs, housing or any sort of future for it’s own people has no business taking care of other nations’ people but then, everybody knows this but many would prefer to snuggle themselves in platitudes than face facts.
As for the idea that we need more hotels, hard to know if that’s a joke or not.

      3. Kin

Broad bay between price gouging and massive increases of hotels prices plus all the cheaper accommodation housing tens of thousands of refugees
I doubt there will be many tourist s this year for there is no where to put them so I doubt there will be many jobs left in hospitality and especially in rural Ireland
As for Ukrainian refugees working in hospitality
I believe they do not want to work in hospitality with the low wages and if they did it can only be for 20 hours a week
Personally I have tried posting jobs in the local hotels catering for them and no takers

      1. The Dude

        Correct, bell.

The game is to only let the oligarchical players take punts on bigger sites and then sell to another, without building anything. And repeat.

Over On The Ditch, remarkable slurry has been coming out with major allegations regarding An Bord Pleanala.
        https://www.ontheditch.com/

‘An Bord Pleanála board member didn’t declare interest in planning appeal submitted by her company’
‘Green Party housing committee chairperson ignored serious allegations against An Bord Pleanála’
‘An Bord Pleanála director assigned herself Dermot Bannon-designed development in own neighbourhood’
‘An Bord Pleanála planning director signed off strategic housing applications submitted by husband’s clients’
        Etc, etc.

Their state looks after their mates?

Odd how little of the scandalous allegations have emerged from established media sources. Maybe they’re too busy flogging property?

Meanwhile Dublin is the worst run capital in the EU, and there is total failure of supply in the accommodation markets.

Still: €850 for one night in Islandbridge! What charm, what a memorable, bespoke occasion.

What a load of suckers we are being taken for.

        1. Big Lad

          It’s true.
For every new hospital we get at least three new surrounding hotels for free.

This is what you get when you elect landlords to government.

  3. Nilbert

yes, for the same price you could fly to Spain and stay in some soul-less high rise, surrounded by boorish English eating fry-ups and watching Del boy on the large screen.
    It’s entirely up to you.

      1. Big Lad

Stop hitting yourself TenPin Troll-X, (you stupid b*****.)
Nobody outside of Cork has ever heard of Trabolgan.

We already know where you live.
We know where you go on holiday.
        Stop reminding us.

        1. TenPin Terry

Trabolgan has been welcoming good working-class Irish families from all over the country for decades.
It’s the Côte d’Azur for culchies.
          The Nice for Norries.
          Paddy’s Portofino.
          Biarritz for boggers.
It’s not just for langers you know …

          1. nilbert

You’re trying too hard, this is becoming very jaded.
It had potential but the anti-Irish thing is too obvious.
Although.. I do enjoy hearing your inner Langer coming through the faux Terry Thomas schtick.

    1. Mr .T

Ah yes, Dublin is the pinnacle of culture in contrast.

Stay in some soul-less high rise hotel, surrounded by aggressive junkies as you get food delivered to you by a brazilian deliveroo driver, and watch the match on the large screen (its too wet to go to the real thing)

      1. nilbert

I suppose you could find that option if that’s what you are into. Each to their own..

      2. TenPin Terry

And why the need to stay two nights ?
The game only lasts 70 minutes and most of the Mayo boggers will leave after 50 to miss the traffic home.
They’ll still be eating the leftover crusts from their ham sangers and drinking the dregs of their flask of tae.
And be home in time to sleep with their cousin.

      3. Big Lad

        @Mr. T;
You sound like a taxi driver who can’t understand why you never get tips.

    2. Kim The Cardassian

      Yeah Dublin..

Stay in some soul-less lego brick generic looking hotel, surrounded by junkies and scumbags, and pay average of €6+ for a pint in a city that has about as much charm as a JCB doing a wheelie.

    3. Kin

      Nilbert
Perfect for the average Irish tourist jetting out of Dublin airport
They are the ones you see at the Irish pubs roasted red in the sun And eat burgers and pizza

  4. TenPin Terry

Apparently Máirtin Flannery is ” a big Mayo, Celtic, Liverpool fan, Member of Sinn Fein ” according to his bio.
I can just see One Vowel™ reaching for his box of tissues …

  5. Bort

Bullsh*t. 2 nights, 2 adults, breakfast included in the Gresham for 700 quid.

    1. Mr .T

That is embarrassing that you thought this was some kind of gotcha.
700quid for 2 nights in Dublin, not Madrid or Paris or Barcelona but Dublin

      1. Bort

The guy said couldn’t find anything for less than 1000. 175 quid per night including breakfast on the main street in any European capital is pretty good. The Gresham being the fancy option, plenty of cheaper options. I’m merely calling shenanigans

      1. Kin

Yes Daisey when you step out at night on O’Connell street you can observe the Irish smackus addictive wild life shooting up and if you really want to experience the Dublin experience get mugged in the process
Such a shame a beautiful building exterior in such a part of the city

    2. K.Cavan

That’s Great Value, Bort, breakfast, even! Eh, is Bort how they pronounce Bart, where you live?

    1. TenPin Terry

I’m thinking the same thing with the World Cup.
      Well, not Spain as such.
I don’t fancy going to Qatar and it’s all going to be a bit gloomy in Ireland on account of not qualifying.
So we’re thinking of somewhere on a reasonable time line where we can watch it at a beach bar and drown our sorrows when the Krauts knock us out on penalties.
      Caribbean I suppose.
      Key West maybe.
      Any thoughts ?

( Sorry, I mentioned the world cup but I think I got away with it …)

        1. Big Lad

          Rwanda.

…or the Isle Of Man, Gibralter, Jessey, Isle of White, the Caymans…etc.

Nobody boes Brit like the brits

      1. K.Cavan

What I’m wondering, Terry, is that, given that England will continue their popular tribute to Big George Floyd during the WC, might they just take the next step, for the occasion that’s in it and actually swallow.
        While they’re down there, like?

  6. Mick

Eh, you’ll be a week late if you go on 18/19 June. The match is on Saturday 11th June.

    1. K.Cavan

Probably for the best, Mick. That way you have more time to enjoy the sights, sounds & smells of the Globalist Urban Utopia that is Dublin.
As for the World Cup, why bother when you can watch Nigeria V Somalia outside McDonalds in O’Connell St?
