‘sup?

Peter O’Connell, in the Irish Examiner, reports:

Gravediggers were told on the morning of a funeral, a burial plot on rocky ground was not deep enough.

And a person, believed to be a council official, had advised the grave would have to be extended down a further two feet. The incident was relayed to a council meeting by Clare Fine Gael county councillor Bill Slattery.

He further claimed council employees in north Clare were doing spot checks on open graves to check if they were eight feet deep.

[Mr Slattery said:] “I believe there are personnel from Clare County Council, roaming around inspecting graves to make sure that a coffin is down, I’m told, eight feet.

“There are graveyards around here where you can barely go down five feet because of the rock situation. It has to be clarified because the undertakers are not too sure and they have asked to find out are there new guidelines for burying people?

Thud.

I believe it is eight feet if you want your spouse buried on top of you in the same grave.
Traditionally six feet under is just that tantalisingly little bit too far for the maggots to get to the cadaver but modern coffins are made to withstand that partly because you might need to be dug up again.

      Interesting.

Do these new coffins mean that graves don’t ‘sink’ (as it’s politely referred to) anymore?

Would it not be more amusing to launch said cadavers from the cliffs of moher by trebuchet or circus cannon to the strains of amazing grace on the bagpipes ?
Would cheer up the proceedings no end.
Imagine being a surfer out at aileens and the next thing you know is a ripe fella “drops in” on the lineup…

Go on the shallow graves McGee. Famous for it the lazy bollix. Actually barred from the Gravediggers, Glasnevin bit is known to do the rounds late looking wistfully at the plots. Alledged highlights include tripping up one of Jack Lynch’s pall bearers and being there when Franno’s foot went through yet man’s Ma’s box!
