      The Metropole indeed. A cinema, ballroom, theatre, restaurant, bit of a social hub. O’Connell St was really quite elegant! What a contrast to the mess of today.

    Where are the homeless sleeping rough at the GPO, the Carlton, The Savoy?? I mean 60years on thank goodness things have improved soo much.

      Er – in industrial schools or other medieval institutions maybe? Along with the Magdalenes and the kids from the mother and baby homes?

      Things have improved, we still have crises and traumas, but let’s never, ever get so hysterical we forget what kind of country 1960’s Ireland was.

      But obviously O’Connell Street Dublin is THE O’Connell Street for Ireland, for obvious reasons.

    I haven’t looked, these ‘might’ be part of the Charles Weever Cushman collection, hosted by his alma mater, Indiana University, USA.

    Amuses me how stuff gets misattributed so easily online, his photographs of Dublin in the early 1960s are posted on a lot of retro sites with all sorts of apocryphal nonsense attached to their history.

    The site is well indexed and a search for Dublin gets about 3 pages of results..

    Ah look at the auld London pines down the middle. Weren’t they glorious? Before Bertie had them all chopped down to try to make O’Connell St more like the ‘Champs Elysee’ by planting other types of tress. Of course the Champs Elysee is lined with London pines. But that’s what happens when you got a gobshite for t-shock.

      The reason for planting those trees in Paris (and Madrid, Barcelona, Nice, Milan and Seville) is to provide shade from the sun. They were never an appropriate choice for Dublin. All they did was block out natural light.

        Trees are nice though, especially in cities. They also improve the air quality. London Planes in particular do well in polluted environments.

    Did anything concrete ever happen with plans to make O’Connell St look less like a kip with regards signage, Dr Quirkey’s, etc?
