clearly none of them have ever played Sim City or Civilisation or they’d know that if there’s not enough police, crime skyrockets and your rating goes down.

i don’t object to people asking for what they’re worth; what i object to is the gardai telling us we’re on our own while they strike. the period before christmas always sees a rise in robberies and break-ins; this is only going to make it more of a free-for-all.

While I support pay restoration for all front-line staff (they are being criminally underpaid and it’s completely a false economy to have broke, demoralized people protecting, healing and teaching us), I don’t know where the extra 2.5bn a year is going to come from right now. Added to that taxpayer anger at ‘fiscal space’ perceived as being swallowed up just by public sector pay instead of other improvements to services.
This is one of those cases where there’s no easy or perfect answer. Political grandstanding in the Dail doesn’t fix this.
