Congratulations to Joe Schmidt and the Ireland team for achieving an historic win over the All Blacks.

An equal non-congratulations to the IRFU, EirSport and whoever else was involved in not showing the match live on television to the vast majority of sporting fans.

The selfish manipulation of live television coverage is in stark contrast to the honesty and heroism of the players on the field.

Yea, but it is also Redacted’s media that hypes up a friendly victory over a team ranked 5 places above Ireland to be some kind of amazing event. Without the media this would be just a routine training match win as it is seen as a training match loss in NZ.

      1. Murtles

The congratulatory reaction to Irelands win emerged from many news sources in both hemispheres and from media outlets in no way related to Mr R Edacted, If you thought that match was equivalent to a training match and of no significance then you’ve no business watching rugby.

        1. Anomanomanom

In fairness, it was actually a meaningless win. I mean yeah great that we won but what’s the big deal. We get nothing but a pat on the back.

          1. Funk

At a minimum we get world ranking points which will be critical to the pool selection for RWC 2019, which is drawn early next year. We will be top (if in top 4) or second seeds and avoid a more difficult group

          2. Pixxyman

If its meaningless, then all the other tour matches down the years are meaningless.. that means that New Zealand have only beaten us once in competitive action.

However, it did bump us up to 5th in the world.. 1 more jump and we are seeded in pot 1 for the next world cup draw. So its quite important, its also a revenue stream to keep Irish international players in Ireland and it breaks New Zealands 18 game unbeaten run.

          3. Anomanomanom

I like rugby so Im not attacking it but iv always felt tour matches are pointless. I think of them like the 6 nations, yeah its nice to win but really pointless.

          4. ReproBertie

You see one of only two international rugby competitions that Ireland compete in as pointless?

30 years ago there was no international competition that Ireland could play New Zealand, Austrlia or South Africa in. As a result tours and international tests had meaning and still do. Not understanding that doesn’t change it.

Don’t distress yourself, ’tis a mere troll – and I doubt if it’s even actually female. It pops up from time to time to try and “say something controversial”…………heavy sigh.

      1. Eliot Rosewater

So, if we get into a better pot we may actually get beyond the last 8 in the world cup? That would be amazing.

  1. The Bad Ambassador

The match was shown live on television. The vast majority of fans could have watched the game – either by subscribing to the BT Sports package or by going to one of many pubs that showed the game.

To bemoan the fact it wasn’t on free-to-air television shows a naiivety about the relationship between modern day professional sport, television rights and cold hard cash. I wish it was different as much as the next person – but it’s not going to change.

      1. The Bad Ambassador

Just being realistic: like it or lump it this is the current situation. If you want to watch these games you have 3 options, Pay for the sports package so you can watch it in your own home, find somewhere else to watch it or buy a ticket and attend in person.

Of course this wouldn’t be an issue if the team had had the decency to settle for the heroic defeat – it wouldn’t have left people with all this disappointment at missing out on an historic moment.

        1. mauriac

imagine rugby fans going to a pub at 8 on a Saturday to watch a match!! shocking stuff.I’m glad RTE don’t shell out for these entertaining but non essential tours.Anyone with half a brain could get a stream anyway.

          1. realPolithicks

The game wasn’t shown live here in the states either. It was broadcast at 8pm edt on NBCSN, this was four hours after the game began.

  2. munkifisht

A huge payday for Irish rugby bringing much needed money into the game that can be used to retain our Irish players from being poached by the much more wealthy English and French clubs. NBC holds the rights in the States and is not giving them away for free. Most fans know the score and know that it’s a necessary evil. Don’t like it, don’t watch it. If you’re a proper fan you’ll find a way to see the game.

    1. classter

      Exactly, ’tis a difficult one.

Arguably not having matches on terrestial tv will hurt them long-term but in the short & medium-term they need the cash

  3. Panty Christ

It was only a friendly though. World Cup isn’t for another few years. That’s when the results really count.

    1. ReproBertie

There are no friendlies in rugby.

Results always count but they count more than usual between now and May as the pool draw for the 2019 RWC will take place then. Ireland’s win over NZ moved them to 5th and a win over Australia or another one over NZ would move them to 4th (which means top tier for the RWC draw) going into the Six Nations.

          1. ReproBertie

So you’d imagine but it’s not. Realistically 7 or 8 teams could win the RWC – New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, France, England, Ireland, Wales and Argentina – but how many could win the soccer one? Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Brazil, Argentina and the Netherlands is 7. Am I missing any others?

          2. rotide

It is quite demonstrably not more competitive, I’m sorry.

4 out of 25 teams have won it. Not even close to the much smaller percentage of teams that have won the football world cup.

          3. Mr Reality

Football competitive yea ok, there’s one thing to factor in and that is that football has no video ref, the decisions are rarely right and injustice and wrong decisions regularly spoil top matches, Fifa refuse to address this so on the charade goes, rugby has a video ref and 2 touch judges everything gets called correctly there is no fall out about poor ref decisions or incorrect calls, in essence one is a fair sport and one isn’t

  4. Mr. Camomile T

Now that the Sky Sports monopoly has been broken subscription-based sports channels are on the way out. It’s only a matter of time before they wise up and start offering pay-per-view HD streams for the games that you actually want to see. Would I pay >€30/month for a sports channel that doesn’t show every game of the team or sport that I follow? No. Would I pay €2/game for a HD stream of a match that I actually wanted to see. Absolutely.

    1. Bertie Blenkinsop

Yep, hopefully that’s the way it’ll go, it’s a joy to watch Liverpool at the moment.*

      * I don’t mind the pain, it’s the hope that kills me.

    2. ivan

I’m right in saying that this will totally lead to a situation where the bigger/richer clubs get even bigger and richer though won’t it? There’ll always be more demand (hence more people paying 2 quid a go) for a Man U game than a team lower down though?

I’m largely uninterested in sport so I don’t actually care if this is ‘fair’ or not but just an observation/question.

      1. Mr. Camomile T

That would depend on the deal that clubs or leagues/competitions negotiate with the distributors. If the deal is negotiated on a per competition basis, then the distributors would pay for the rights to show the competition in general, not individual teams. It’s up to the clubs to then distribute the money between themselves, probably based on where they finish in the league or cup competition. As far as I understand it that’s how distribution rights currently work.

bit of an anti-climax after a cracking game – RTE coverage of the rugby is excellent and was sorely missed.

  6. Andrew

So no criticism for RTE our national broadcaster? They could have bid for the game too you know. But they will tell you they don’t have the money. They DO have the money to make millionaires of Ryan Tubridy, Joe Duffy, Ray Darcy et al. They buy rights for Champions League soccer games that do not involve Irish teams and are free to air on ITV anyway. They also, for some reason continue, to buy Eastenders.
RTE have a massive sports department but I’m not quite sure what they all do?
RTE exist for the benefit of its employees first and foremost. There is no real transparency and about 40 % of their programming are repeats.

    1. rotide

They also, for some reason continue, to buy Eastenders.

You don’t really understand how Television and advertising work, do you?

        1. rotide

          Many people watch Eastenders.

Buy Eastenders and many people see the ads during it while they watch.

          Charge many euros for adspace.

          Profit.

Try not to move your mouth as you read this treatsie on the hidden arcane secrets of advertising.

          1. Andrew

so people who watch Eastenders will choose to watch it on RTE with ads rather than BBC without ads? Nah.

    2. classter

      RTE sport is excellent imo.

They obviously have massive commercial pressures.

The likes of Eastenders pay for themselves – sad but true

      1. Anomanomanom

Every game is free lets be honest. And if by now you don’t know how to get them free, you deserve to miss the sport you like.

  7. pat okelly

I fully agree -shame on IRFU & RTE to miss this and not even highlights available -if you want the World Cup you WILL need the people so please wise up and ensure that the team that represents the nation can be seen on live TV by the licence fee payers

As a sky sports subscriber and a rugby fan I’ve been considering jumping ship for a while now. BT Sport tend to get the better Heineken Cup fixtures and are making significant inroads on the football. Sky tend now to show a lot of Pro12 games, golf and NFL, most of which aren’t that interesting to me.

I was a bit miffed that Eirsport isn’t available to Eir business customers but at least I got to go out to the pub for the evening. The only reason that I subscribe to Sky Sports is because I don’t have the option of hitting the pub every time I want to watch something – even though it would be cheaper to do so.

I doubt that it was even an option to show the game on terrestrial TV no matter what money RTE may or may not have. If it were then why bother dragging everyone over to the states for it? RTE will be showing the upcoming games so I don’t see the big deal

As far as seeding for RWC2019 is concerned it helps but it’s not a massive deal either – Ireland aren’t going to drop out of the top 8 at this stage and they aren’t going to make the top 4 either. So it will be the usual limbo position where they can maybe hope to beat one of the big 4 in order to reach the semis again. Basically no northern hemisphere team will win the world cup again for at least 12 years

  9. ReproBertie

Usually posts about RTÉ are moaning about the stuff they show and how it’s not worth the licence fee and how they’re the blueshirt propaganda wing. Every Late Late or Ray D’Arcy preview posted on Broadsheet is finished off with a (presumably tongue in cheek) “Burns imaginary licence”.

If New Zealand had won this game nobody would give a toss about the coverage. People who knew about it and were interested in it found ways to watch. Moaning about RTÉ for not fighting eir/BT to get the coverage rights for this is uterly pointless. RTÉ have already lost the HECNua, the Pro12 and the RWC to other networks because they don’t have the resources to compete.

Ireland V New Zealand on November 19th will be live on RTÉ as will Ireland V Canada (November 5th) and Ireland V Australia November (26th). No doubt the viewing figures for these will break all previous records.

      1. ReproBertie

No. They’ve had to make cutbacks over the past few years with the result that they lost a lot of sports. This is not a secret. They regularly release the information about their costs and savings.

          1. ReproBertie

Why don’t you ask them? info@rte.ie

I’m sure there are people in the sports department that would argue that having the premier league or European Rugby Cup is better value than having the Ray D’Arcy show but clearly they lost that argument.

          2. Clampers Outside

Not defending that package of Ray’s but RTE’s ratio of revenue to the cost of ‘top paid presenters / personalities’ is below the industry average…..
It helped RTE meet that target when Pat Kenny left, and when Gerry Ryan died.

I did post a link to that study on here before but for the life of me, I don’t know how to find it right now.

          3. rotide

Im far more interested to know what sporting events Andrew thinks RTE could buy for €500k. Maybe he’s a keen Kabaddi fan.

I was at home on Saturday, pondering the whole issue/problem around alcohol and sports, and using complicated mathematical formulae, and a few handy household items that were lying around, I solved the problem. Total ‘Eureka!’ moment. I was about to write it all down in proper format, for publication to the Government, and the world, to solve all the problems, when I remembered I had to head to the pub to watch the match, because the Government sold the viewing rights to the pubs, and after a few pints, I’d forgotten the whole thing. Freaked!
