This afternoon.

Solicitor Simon McGarr has again claimed the Department of Social Welfare collects and processes biometric facial recognition data, contrary to the department’s assertion that it doesn’t.

Mr McGarr supports his claim with the following…

I thought that this was general knowledge as they say it whenever they trot out the usual social welfare fraud allegations.

I was sent a form and asked if I wanted to apply for one of these cards. On the form was 5 security questions they wanted me to answer in order to confirm my identity if I was to call the department at any time.

They wanted me to fill in all 5 security questions. On a piece of paper. And send it through the post. To then be manually inputted to a database by someone.
1- the answers to these questions are likely used on many other services, emails, social media accounts etc.
2- they wanted them all in one place, on a piece of paper, sent through the post!
3- an employee was then going to have visibility of all my questions/answers while inputting them to the database.
4- what happens to this piece of paper when they have finished with it?!

The mind really boggles that a government department would have such a lack of understanding and competent disregard for basic personal identity security of their citizens information. The absolute only way this data should be collected is via a secure online portal.

I love bamboozling those callers who ask you straight away for that detail over the phone. I always ask them to verify THEIR identity otherwise I’m giving info to a randomer who is calling me…it always throws them off ‘the script’.

I recieved a letter from the department of social welfare asking if I wanted to consent to the biometric data gathered for my drivers license to be used for my PSC.
So they do know they are gathering biometric data.

    Remember folks,

The card is a red herring.

The agenda here is a digital database.

A permanent digital file for each citizen.

Your photo, biometric as it can legally be for now as a header.

Containing as much consolidated confidential, private & personal information it can net.

On your personal current and histories in relation to:

    Health
    Housing
    Finance [taxes,banking,debts,revenue etc..]
    Legal
    Motoring
    Political leanings
    Etc.. etc..

    Unamendable by you.

    Stored wherever.

    Viewed by the unaccountable.

@Jimmy: it was reported that Venezuela’s equivalent ID records the voting history of each citizen. Chilling and not in the Netflix/leg over way

      +1
But but but if you’ve nothing to hide….blah blah blah. These people wilfully miss the point!
I had some online dealings with Revenue in the last few weeks…the very NEXT day I and my wife get phished via text AND email for a fake refund. I followed up with revenue asking about HOW my data is protected as the Revenue website simply says in a long winded…your data is protected…very little detail. Did I get a response??????

One instance would be where you furnish it to ‘Daon’
by unwittingly proxy, using the same email the Department has on file for you, to
sign into a gofundmepage etc.. that has leanings, in this example towards a left wing cause.

        gofundmepage says:

…you acknowledge and agree that such personal data may be transferred from your current location to the offices and servers of GoFundMe and the authorized third parties referred to herein..

        Who are the third parties?

I’m not an expert on GoFundMe, but I imagine that it is the organiser of the GoFundMe (to sign people up to newsletters related to the cause), or their hosting company, or their advertisers.

Though you make a very good point – people should always pay attention as to how much of their personal data they are broadcasting online.

What a lot of waffle over nothing. Of course they need to be able to compare photographs to avoid fraud, what is the big problem with this?

    1. Prob is Jeff,

heath related or not, that their actuary algorithms have now deemed you unsuitable as a client.

They won’t be under any obigation to tell you what that information is or where they
        acquired it.
