Last night.

It was reported by WLR FM journalist Damien Tiernan that three youths were attacked in Earlscourt estate, Waterford city, last Thursday.

Mr Tiernan reported that “acid” was thrown over the youths.

One of those attacked was Tega Agberhiere, an Irish soccer u17 international, who has suffered first-degree burns on his face.

On RTE’s Morning Ireland this morning, Irish Mirror journalist Saoirse McGarrigle reported that the substance was also thrown on the leg of one of the other youths, GAA player Padraig O’Sullivan, who has played for Waterford.

Ms McGarrigle also reported it was thrown on the back of another youth, a promising rugby player.

She reported that it’s believed the attack was a case of “mistaken identity”.

Meanwhile, Damien has said he will broadcast his full interview with Tega’s mum Christy during his show Deise Today later today (between 10am and noon).

    Its the most despicable crime any teenagers can do to each other. Horrifically damaging. I hope this does not start a trend for these type of attacks like over in London. Its sick

    People who attack people with acid/chemicals. Quite simply the worst people imaginable. Such a scummy, mean, nasty, evil thing to do.

    If you must fight, fight. But this is a vile thing to do.

    I wonder if you could define and legislate for a particular type of assault that had the express intent of disfiguring, causing premeditated on-going pain and torture. I guess judges must take this into account.

        Telling people not to fight is stupid. You’re telling them their own safety is not worth protecting.

        By all means tell people not to attack people but if attacked everyone should feel free to fight back.

          His point is don’t throw acid, just fight instead. He is not saying defend yourself against people who throw acid at you.

    How utterly vile. If I were to be feeling vengeful, I’d try an acid drop form of torture to teach the scum that did this a lesson.

    We really, really need to look at sentences for this sort of stuff. Its quite possible an attack with acid can kill the victim (google, if you have the stomach, about the guy who was euthanized in The Netherlands, Mark Von Dongen.

    Its a harrrowing read, the guy was in such pain that he was allowed to die.

    Anyone who throws acid at another should get automatic severe sentences in line with attempted murder (I’d prefer murder but legally it could be problematic).

    But this is Ireland and they appear to have no inclination to protect the public outside of the bare minimum.
