A Limerick A Day

US President Donald Trump said this morning that he and first lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the coronavirus

Here’s news that will cheer you up quick:
It turns out that Trump is now sick
So let’s hope he’ll reach
For a bottle of bleach
As he’s claimed that that will do the trick

Why would anyone be cheered up by the news that Trump and his wife or indeed anyone has caught a potentially fatal virus ?
Here’s hoping Moynes and everyone at BS avoids bowel cancer …

    1. bisted

…I’m guessing some of the relatives of the over 200k who have died of the virus in the US might see it as a sort of karma…

    2. Otis Blue

      Johnson, Bolsonaro and now Trump.

All populists who have sought to diminish the reality of Covid-19 and whose countries have suffered greatly as a consequence. Whisper it quietly but it might be that rational policies actually matter.

      1. Charger Salmons

How did Johnson seek to diminish the reality of Covid-19 ?
The UK went into lockdown before Ireland.
My word there is some level of stupid on this forum today. It’s like Trump and his wife getting C-19 has woken up every conspiracy theorist, nutjob and tinfoil hat-wearer who normally sleep through the day and trawl the internet at night dressed only in their yellowing Y-fronts.
Trump tested positive after one of his closest aides who he works with on an hourly basis,Hope Hicks, came down with C-19.
The idea that he’s making it up is something so ludicrous that only Nigel on here would believe in it and he thinks you can catch AIDS by drinking pasteurised milk.

          1. Charger Salmons

Varadkar only announced the setting up of a special cabinet committee to deal with C-19 on March 2nd, the same day Boris attending his first Cobra meeting which had already met five times previously to deal with the pandemic ( incidentally the first Cobra meeting Nicola Sturgeon attended as well )
The UK issued its stay-at-home orders on March 23rd.
Ireland issued the same orders on March 27th.
            Facts baby facts.

          2. Charger Salmons

Stay-at-home orders, banning all non-essential travel and contact with people outside one’s home (including family and partners), were introduced in Ireland on March 27th – four days after the UK when Varadkar came under pressure to match Boris’ tough stance.
Lockdown means being ordered to stay at home not shutting up shops and pubs.
            Jeez, this is basic stuff.

          3. Commenter #1

But I was under the impression that lockdowns weren’t necessary. This is a slippery virus and no mistake! Johnson is at once guilty of imposing a lockdown, and to be credited for imposing a lockdown.

            Fascinating stuff.

        1. Otis Blue

You might believe otherwise but the lack of a clear strategy, mixed messages and delayed reactions can be laid at Bozo’s door. Remember him wandering around hospitals, smiling and shaking hands with those infected with the virus? The failed herd immunity strategy? Failures to meet testing targets? PPE? Dyson Ventilators? “Squashing the Sombrero”? etc

Having the highest number of COVID-19 deaths in Europe isn’t a success.

          https://bylinetimes.com/2020/06/01/the-lost-march-how-the-uk-governments-covid-19-strategy-fell-apart/

          1. Nigel

Ah yes, back when even the eugenicist and orphan-killing Tories came to realise that ‘herd immunity’ would be a disaster.

        2. Rosette of Sirius

          Diminish the reality?!!!!

          You’re quite the glimmerman….

Id say it was when he was boasting about shaking hands with everyone in the hospital with patients suffering from the rona.

Then, when he got out of hospital after getting the shock of his life, he started to sing a very very different tune.

        3. Charger Salmons

It’s funny how you don’t read any articles in the Irish media any more about how much better Ireland is doing with C-19 than the UK.
In the early days hardly a day went by without some gloating.

          Heh x current R rate.

          1. scottser

nobody is covering themselves in glory right now. using one government’s response over another for a cheap gotcha is five knuckle shuffling of the highest stamp.

        4. Charlie

“The idea that he is making it up is so ludicrous…”.
You have to be either the most naive or dumbest cider swiller currently on the internet not to consider this a possibility with this knuckle dragger.

    3. Charlie

I’d hate to see either of them become fatalities but I’d quite enjoy him being taken to within an inch of his life. My bad?

  2. Harry they/them

Is it any wonder both himself and Boris got it – they both think rules do not apply to them and that their actions have no consequence.

Normal persons would feel humbled after the infection, am not expecting that here.

    1. Janet, dreams of big guns

may I ask Harry do you still share this account ?
I always am having fun trying to work out which one of you wrote the comment :)

    2. Harry he/him

We’re no longer exclusive but spend a lot of time “together”.
When we’re lying together we may post together, otherwise it’s usually just me

      1. Brother Barnabas

since regaining your liberty, have you been out and about – “on the town” – with Dr Fart? hope you dont mind me asking

        1. Harry he/him

I’ve been too busy with work. Apart from the odd airport hotel romance, it’s usually just myself and happy attending lifestyle parties.

I wonder if we ever met any other broadsheeters?

  3. Friscondo

Not so fast. This could win him the election. If he gets a mild dose and recovers quickly, he and his supporters will claim vindication. Let’s hope he really suffers.

  4. Nigel

This has actually broken me because I simply don’t believe it, can’t take it seriously and think it must be just a stunt, and yet it could just as easily be true, there’s no reason to believe it isn’t, other than that Trump is such a liar, but he’s also a bad and transparent liar, so, I just don’t know what to do with this information.

    1. ReproBertie

Fake news. He’ll be back in a fortnight, after skipping a couple of debates, bragging about how Covid is just a flu and selling some new snake oil cure.

      1. Nigel

That’s such a ridiculously high-risk play, though, that’s surely easier for some idiot to come up with than to pull off. Two weeks at minimum out of campaigning this close to the election? And if after two weeks he bounces back healthy as ever there isn’t a single person in the world who will believe he really had it, not even his supporters, they’ll just think he’s a genius for pwning the libs. The fact that so many people hate him but he doesn’t care and does what he wants only lasts while he’s president and protected by the Senate. Once out of power the man is going to become a toxic pariah, and faking covid could literally get him chased through the streets by angry mobs. BUT STILL he’s too evil and arrogant tor rule it out…

And as for the option where he really has it – cowabunga, dude. Cowabunga.

        1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

I don’t see the upside in faking it. The way he has been behaving, in a country where it is rampant, it is no surprise he has got it. A real conspiracy theory is that he caught it on purpose with the hope of giving it to Biden. He might fancy his chances of surviving it and hopes Biden doesn’t.

          1. Nigel

He is, as they say, famously germophobic, so that’s, I want to say ‘unlikey’ but we’re running out of ways to guage likeliness and unlikeliness.

Actually, logically, there’s very little upside to faking it, but the problem is trying to twist ourselves into mimicking Trump logic is a mug’s game. He has it, leave it at that until more develops, as it assuredly will.

        2. ReproBertie

He can’t force a vaccine through so a recovery and a new snake oil cure for his supporters to rally round is the next best thing.

          1. Nigel

The only viable strategies open to Trump right now are to
            a) get out there rallying his base
            b) hope the media maul Biden over nothing, the way they mauled Clinton.
            c) ongoing voter supression and floods of data-driven misinformation, but he doesn’t need to be involved directly in any of that except by amplifying it.
Faking covid – ??? – victory! is a conspiracy gnomes’ idea of a strategy, and we’re only considering it as possible because… it’s Trump.

        3. Daisy Chainsaw

Boris was in the ICU, hours from a ventilator and then released from hospital 2 days later so I wouldn’t put it past Trump. The most shocking thing is Melania being a close contact!

          1. Nigel

Boris had a huge majority and high popularity ratings – Trump has never had either, has been taped downplaying the virus, then made endless quotable statements while the death toll rose. Any sympathy bounce will be minimal. Even his supporters will suggest that it’s some sort of 5D chess move to pwn the libs. I’m increasingly coming to think he really has it, and all the automatic conspiracy thinking on both sides is a direct result of him having shat the bed so thoroughly in terms of truth and personal morality.

  5. SOQ

    This could be quite convenient-

Biden has so far been keeping his head down in the hope the vote would fall in a pro / anti Trump manner.

Trump off the stage will mean media focus will now be on Biden- a reverse tactic if you like. Plus gaining a certain sympathy vote of course.

    1. Nigel

It says a lot about how effective the Republican noise machine has been that you could suggest this could be bad for Biden. He’d have a clear national stage to 1)Hammer home everything Trump did wrong, all the lies Trump told – the big problem would be there’s so many to choose from. 2) Describe what he’ll do to fix and reverse Trump’s messes, all with no Trump desperately, but usually effectively, disrupting the news cycles.

      1. Cian

“all with no Trump desperately, but usually effectively, disrupting the news cycles.”

Trump can still use twitter from isolation.

        1. Nigel

Can imagine them fighting to get the phone off him while trying to get him intubated to the ventilator.

  6. goldenbrown

yea yea I’m not buying into any of this, my opinion he’s a populist (in serious re-election trouble) and this is a populist play. And the worst thing is it will be practically impossible to prove it one way or other.

ranging from it being a sicknote absolving him of any further participation in debates leading up to election day…to him magically recovering without so much as a scratch two weeks from now (Americans LOVE their indestructible superheroes)….to oh and look I got C19 and it was no worse than having a bad cold it’s all totally exaggerated fakenews etc.

this is a perfect oh so convenient deadener now on any anti-Trump narrative (can’t go kicking a man when he’s down)

Whatever the outcome I guarantee it’s going to favour HIM.

I actually thought they were gonna arrange for a crisis like someone attempting to ahem “shoot” him but I might be watching too much Netflix these days, no need for those logistics when C19 is in town.

    odds-on now he’s getting re-elected

    1. newsjustin

      Maybe. I’m not sure.

You could argue that he MIGHT emerge from this buoyed as if he had survived a near miss assasination attempt or something. Will be spun as such – “Home is the hero! etc”

  7. James M.Chimney

He no more has the ‘rona than I own a yacht. He’s doing a Boris. Hide so you can’t dig yourself a bigger hole. Melania’s facing a bit of a grilling to over her “Give me a break” comment over immigrant children. There’s nothing that the whizz-eyed tango monster and his disgusting wife wouldn’t stoop to. Part of me wishes that he dies wheezing clutching on to his last tub of Cola, but that’s the nice part of me. I won’t repeat what the bad part of me wants for him.

    1. Nigel

See, that logic only works if Trump actually thinks he, or Melania, have done or said anything wrong or bad or damaging to his campaign, and honestly I find that harder to believe than that he’d fake covid.

  8. Charger Salmons

Jaysus, the clowns are out in force today and the circus isn’t even in town.
The White House doctor, a physician commander in the US Navy, has confirmed Trump and his wife have tested positive.
At least the sillies on here should wait until nightfall before howling at the moon.

    1. newsjustin

Trump has been involved with many more bizarre affairs than a suggestion that he might pull a sicky, to be fair. He’s lowered the bar for the whole of political discourse, particularly in the US.

    2. Brother Barnabas

what’s the relevance of the physician being an army boy ?

you’re inferring that it means he wouldnt lie; in fact, it means he’ll do and say what he’s told to do and say

    3. Nigel

I do not deny that over this I do feel Nutty, and two physicians confirming it should dispel the mistrust, but have you SEEN how many people have been arrested, indicted and/or gone to jail for and because of Trump? Can you imagine hw many in his administration are going to be at risk of arrest and certainly under serious investigation once he’s out of office? It’s Nuttytown, Salm. You’re right, Occam’s Razor suggests it’s true, but the Bishop of Ockham never had to deal with Trump. I mean, I know it’s useless adressing this to a far-right shock-capitalist hard-man authoritarian apologist, but I’m working through some stuff.

    1. Nigel

Pence probably licks every surface Trump touches, so he won’t be long after him, then, funnily enough, it’s President Pelosi.

    2. Junkface

Qanon are going to lose their poo over this news! Which direction do they go in? Hilary infected Trump’s bucket of KFC? Maybe he got infected Pizza from the Pizzagate restaurant? No wait, it was Bill Gates using one of his satellites pointed at the White House?

    1. Nigel

Qanon is too busy persuading mothers who lost custody of their children that ther kids have been funnelled into pedophile trafficking rings, encouraging said mothers to kidnap their children and go on the run. Trump’s America. I swear to God I am not making this up.

  9. Junkface

Crazy news! If Trump does really have it, then the signs should be obvious enough. If he’s really hiding away from the cameras for 2 weeks we will know he has it (he’s a germaphobe isn’t he?) . A narcissist can’t resist media attention, so if he’s still spouting off daily nonsense for the cameras its probably a stunt to halt his numbers sliding further after that pigs abortion of a debate. Biden made some points gains in Minnesota and Texas recently.

      1. Junkface

Really? Because he’s 74 and fat, and doesn’t exercise. His white blood cells would not be super active to fight infection.

Even Bolsonaro had symptoms and looked terrified on camera when he first got it. He exercises and is not fat.

        1. SOQ

That is only part of the picture- by the roll of the genetic dice, some people have much better immune systems than other. Like any president you would need to be in decent health to keep up that schedule- let alone run for a second term.

Then there are other factors like the rate of infection- small viral loads will flag as positive without any symptoms at all and, if he was on hydroxychloroquine and the front line doctors are to be believed- his chances of clearing it very quickly are increased.

    1. Brother Barnabas

“”the White House rang the hospital switchboard”

“two strong allies” that dont one have one another’s phone number

      *snigger*

      1. Nigel

‘Yeah hello I want to talk to King Boris, please? King Boris of the, uh, of the, it says here, of the Yook? Is that like New Yook? King Boris of Old Yook? Lots of people are saying he has the China Virus and I want to ship him a case of hydroxymoxycholoroquine and bleach, he’ll be up and about in no time, yeah, and tell him i can give him a good price for Scotland, happy to take it off his heands, yeah? Ok, bye now Your Majesty, bye.’

        1. Charger Salmons

          Nigel, learn from Brother.
The best jokes are one-liners and not those delivered by Nish Kumar.

    2. ReproBertie

“Two strong allies helping to keep the world a safer place.” by toppling rulers and creating terrorists.

      1. Pat Mustard

Wrong, the terrorists were funneled from Lybia, which was invaded with NATO by the previous administration.

        1. ReproBertie

ALL the terrorists were funnelled from Lybia? Every single one of them?

          I didn’t mention any administration.

          1. Pat Mustard

Look at your initial comment. You said trump created terrorists, how did he do this?

ISIS was named ISIL before the Syria invasion under the previous administration.

The terrorists you speak of are from Lybia. Hence you’re wrong.

          2. ReproBertie

Where did I say Trump created terrorists? Easy to argue that he did create terrorists of course. Just look at the attacks by white supremacists in the USA spreading terror on their home soil.

Where did I mention ISIL? Are ISIS the only terrorists in the world now?

I’ll spare you further public humiliation. I was referring to the “strong allies” of the USA and UK, not to any particular leader of either country so you can stand back on your raging fanboy defence of Trump. Amazing how much wrong you can read in to 6 words that I typed, none of which were “Trump”, “ISIS” or “ISIL”.

          3. Pat Mustard

            Brilliant..

So which administration were you referring to when you stated that “created terrorists” comment?

Don’t spare me the humiliation, lay it on..

            I await your obfuscation..

          4. ReproBertie

No obfuscation at all Pat. I’m referring to all of the US presidents who have bombed Muslim countries around the world. Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan and Carter. That brings us back 40 years over which time they have bombed at least 15 Muslim countries, most of them several times.

I know you like to think Trump isn’t continuing Obama’s campaign but the truth is the US dropped more bombs in Afghanistan in 2019 than any year since they started keeping track in 2006. Drone strikes are also up under Trump. When it comes to bombing Muslims, the current racist in chief is just as eager as the rest of them.

  10. Commenter #1

Imagine. If only he’d worn a mask/”muzzle” more often this would have been so much less likely.

    Such a pity.

    Such a shame.

  11. ian-oh

I don’t like Trump but how the hell would I be ‘cheered up’ by him contracting a potentially fatal virus?

    FPS BS, this is ridiculous.

  12. Cian

What’s the difference between the “China Virus” and the Vietnam War?

    Trump dodged the Vietnam War.
