My cousin, amongst others, fought for that right here. She wanted to marry her Jen, and given that happened and Jen is still around, I guess that was a good decision.
My only regret is that seven days before the referendum I was suddenly deployed to northern Tanzania. Nature of my job. But I was unable to do my part to let her dream come true.
I still remember the Sunday morning, though, as I shelled my eggs to have with warm chapati, when my Nigerian colleague in this small hotel in northern Tanzania informed me of the results of the most momentous referendum in my own country. He had been told by his sister half a continent away.
I asked if they could put the news on in the breakfast room, and there, in the newsreel, amid all the celebrations, was my cousin’s ballot box: Will you let Ann marry Jen. My cousin is famous in Nigeria and Tanzania, and probably does not know it. And I was eating boiled eggs with chapati.
I am truly delighted for Cara and Amanda, and all those who fought for this. I wish them long and happy lives together.
And of course, for my cousin Ann and her Jen.
Delightful story, Slightly. Very happy for all concerned
+1:)
Should have celebrated with Chips Mayai ;-)
This was morning. The guys who made Chips Mayai did not open until after dark. At lunch we could get a Rolex, but that was about it.
Yay for equality and yay for love.
that’s lovely :)
@Slightly… Your writing is always a pleasure, especially in times when reading Broadsheet comments has become more of trial than a positive experience.
Keep it up!
Agreed, and yay!
Ah, this is some good news.
Good stuff NI
And I hope they do a better job up North of getting children’s rights to both parents, unlike the mess they made down here of it.
Who knew lesbians could look so normal eh?
Along with NYC based Emmaia Gelman and the rest of the original Shaftesbury Square self funded Queer Space crew- I wish you a long life of health and happiness together.
xx.
Shaftesbury Square Belfast I mean in case anyone is prone to- whatever.
