Seen a UK NHS advert yesterday saying the flu jab is more important than ever this year- err why? There is no sign of it whatsoever- unless- the CoVid-19 books are being fiddled of course.

I don’t know if you know this but the flu kills people every year. It also fills ICU beds. It will more that likely do so this year as it does every year but this year there’s another virus taking up ICU bed space so avoiding the flu, which is helped by taking a flu shot, is a good way to avoid the flu putting pressure on ICU beds.
The measures taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus are helping to prevent the global spread of the flu so we might get away with it this year but, equally, we might not. Fail to prepare and all that.
As I said yesterday. By this time last year there had been a total of 45 people in ICU with the flu (October 1st – Mid December). A total of 45 for the quarter.
Last night there are 32 confirmed Covid cases in ICU.
There were 22 flu deaths in the same time-frame. (October 1st – Mid December).
There have been 322 Covid Deaths since 1 October.
And Ireland has managed to keep the second wave to a minimum (compared to Belguim, Italy, France, UK,…)
Let me just rein you in there a bit before you get carried away.
Last year was everyone who entered hospital being administered a PCR test for the flu? Not to my knowledge. According to official estimations. 1 in 3 influenza-infected individuals are asymptomatic, most people have mild symptoms.

From my understanding, a “confirmed Covid case” is a person with a confirmed positive test result. It’s not confirmation that they are in ICU due to Covid. We know that overestimations have happened before – the HIQA report that looked at the number of deaths (1709) originally attributed to Covid during the March-June period, estimated that “more than 630” of that number probably died due to another cause of illness. That’s about 40% of the total.
In this article from September, it says “More patients going into hospital for elective procedures are testing positive for COVID-19”. Isn’t fair to assume that a similar phenomenon is happening with ICU patients?

Fine, if only 60% of these are due to Covid we have:
193 died-of Covid; and 20 in ICU becasue of Covid last night.
versus
22 died-of-flu; and 45 in ICU because of flu, total, over the course of 10 weeks.

I flicked over to this last night. One of the most truly bizarre things I’ve ever seen on RTE.
“Now let’s order an imaginary consignment of vaccines.”
They all move out to the RTE carpark where an articulated lorry is waiting for them.
“So, our order of vaccines has arrived.”
Vaccines are unloaded before they all move back to the studio to show us the special freezer units.
Proceeds to spend the next 10 minutes demonstrating how you would need to store them in the special freezers and these units would need to be hooked up to a generator in case of a power cut. The whole show is covid fear porn but delivered in a childrens television style. So weird to watch.
It has evolved into a current affairs show set in the Twin Peaks universe produced by Brass Eye fans, truly GUBU.

A family members partner is a healthcare worker in the UK and he received the jab the other day.
He was telling us on a family zoom call Sun night.
Said he was grand, he’s in his 20’s but he said it knocked the absolute poo outta him.
Fever, sweats, flu symptoms all that stuff. He had to take to the bed. Then about 5 hours later he felt fine. Not a bother on him.
He said that most of his colleagues haven’t had a similar reaction. Don’t know why he did.
I had a similar reaction to a flu jab a few years ago. I get it every year because of the asthma, but I’ve never had a severe reaction barring that year. Had to take to bed for a day and woke up the next day absolutely fine.
Ah yeah, he’s grand now sure.
Was quite funny as after he’d gone off the zoom call my 75 year old father in law was like “Well that doesn’t sound like very bloody mild side effects to me for Christs sake!!!!”
He’ll deffo still get it though ;)
