Last night/This morning.

Via DW:

Vladimir Putin signed a decree ordering Russian troops into eastern Ukraine in a televised speech to the nation. Putin said Russian troops were being sent in to “maintain peace” in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier Monday, he recognized the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” (DPR) and the “Luhansk People’s Republic” (LPR) in eastern Ukraine as “independent.”

Meanwhile…

The West is preparing a round of fresh sanctions against Russia. At the UN Security Council, the US said it is “nonsense” that Russian forces Putin is sending into Ukraine are “peacekeepers.”

But the train..with the tanks…and the going away!?

Thoughts are with the people of the Ukraine, can’t imagine the nightmare they’re waking up to.

I guess the best case scenario would be the Ukraine ceding the now ‘disputed’ territories but even if they did, is Putin really likely to stop there ?

Again, thoughts and with the poor people over there

Very little has changed for the average Ukrainian to be honest, separatist areas are still separatists, and likely to remain so.

Will Vlad invade up to the Dnieper? I doubt it, that kind of speculation about frozen ground and tanks rolling in and taking Kiev comes from armchair strategists with a hard-on for war, so long as they dont have to fight themselves.

Were your thoughts with the people of Donbass and Donetsk when they were being shelled by the Ukrainian army? That would have been a nightmare scenario. Waking up to read that part of your country has been taken over is not.

putin is ‘tearing up international law’ says the fat tan twit, as he wipes his bottom area with the good friday agreement..

    Firstly this is about water

    Secondly about NATO

No way slavs are going to war with fellow slavs

This is being used to cover up the Covid fallout and Putin was pushing covid as hard as all the rest.

The media are along as well to divert from their role in it.

    1. SOQ

      Agreed.

Either that or there is some NATO manoeuvres in the background. It was always unlikely that Ukraine would ever join NATO but if they tried it, Russia would be in like a flash.

Or anexing of Palestine by Apartheid Israel.

These are all easily dealt with, if your first thought is peace. Isn’t that the reasoning behind UN?

Have a straw poll and then on the result of that have a referendum.

If the referendum is 75%+ that’s fairly clear.

OK I will reluctantly work with those yahoo’s in The United Nations.
        For peace sake.

I’d be surprised if Putin stops at recognising the annexed part. All that is happening is he is testing EU NATO resolve to enter conflict. He has prepared to avoid sanctions for a few years now. He may now go full invasion mode bit by bit.

  5. wearnicehats

They’re not going to impose any effective sanctions on Russia – they will just be window dressing. They’re going to go after Putin’s mates who live in London, Paris, Munich etc. The problem for the governments of these countries, of course, is it will mean biting off the hand that feeds them.

    1. goldenbrown

      “They’re going to go after Putin’s mates…”

      they will in their hole

sure the establishment (politics, markets, property, prem football…) swims in washed roubles

so long as Putin stays away from the related assets that’s never ever happening, same as it ever was wearnicehats

“The city of London is a privately owned Corporation and Sovereign State“

This is not a fact. You are wrong.

            “It has its own government..”

Yes, in the same sense that any local authority has its own government/council. While on the face of it the above statement is not wrong, you are clearly trying to imply that the City of London does not fall under the governance of the UK government, which is wrong.

          2. SOQ

“The City Corporation is Britain’s oldest local government; it has the status of a county, with powers that exceed those of London’s 32 other boroughs, notably the control of its own police force.

The Municipal Corporations Act of 1835 gave the City special dispensation to ignore the overhaul of how London was governed – and there are all kinds of subsequent local government legislation that doesn’t apply there.”

            https://cubetoronto.com/london/is-the-city-of-london-an-independent-state/

No other council in the UK has a ‘government’.

          3. jungleman

They call it a government but it is just a glorified council. You are trying to claim it is a sovereign state! Why can’t you just admit when you are wrong instead of trying to move the goalposts or argue over language. The City of London is not a separate country.

            Cop on!

          4. jungleman

You truthers love a good pile-on. I suppose you all work on the basis that there’s strength in numbers and if you make enough noise all the reasonable rational people will just give up.

But that won’t turn your non-facts into facts.

          5. SOQ

Honest to God- some people would fight with their shadow.

The reason why The City of London is so successful is because it can play by it’s own rules, which are at best, sharp practice.

The closest comparison would be The Vatican which is also extremely wealthy, and has its own questionable practices. The difference is that everyone knows about The Vatican’s independent status.

Personally, I suspect The City of London is the real reason for Brexit, but that is not something that can be proved nor disproved.

          6. jungleman

            No.

The Vatican City IS an independent state. The City of London is not. They are not similar. You are talking through your hoop as usual.

          7. SOQ

With its own independent flag, laws & legislations, and its own privately owned police force, The Crown is an authority unto itself, it is a self-governing body, therefore, no government or governmental agency holds jurisdiction over The Crown or the inner city of london.

The City Of London isn’t officially recognised as a part of Britain. It is, instead, an independent nation-state operating within Britain. It became a sovereign state in 1694 when king William the third of Orange privatized and turned the Bank of England over to the banking fraternities.

            https://independencedaily.wordpress.com/2012/04/01/new-post/

It is not exactly like The Vatican but for comparative purposes, it is closer to it than any other entity in Europe- which why it can launder so much dirty money.

So ill mannered person, who is talking through who’s hoop?

Here is a practical way ordinary folk could show some solidarity and support for Ukraine. Anyone attending any of Chelsea’s games should get or make a Ukraine flag (2 blocks one blue one yellow horizontally) and wave them at the camera. It might present an opportunity for enterprising flag makers out there or even people making their own DIY ones. Even find out which games are going to be broadcast on Russian TV and target then. The Champions League final is due to be played in St Petersburg at the end of May but of course UEFA are even more corrupt then Putin’s cabal so it hardly expect them to grow a pair and switch but clubs and fans could use their leverage the way they did to see off the super league.

The poor Brits may be left shivering as a consequence of their having opted to leave the European family.

Dependent as they are on Norwegian gas, if EU countries need Norwegian gas to compensate for shortfalls in Russian supplies then Clause 38 of Regulation (EU) 2017/1938 concerning “measures to safeguard the security of gas supply and repealing Regulation (EU) No 994/2010” will apply.

Which, for the small print avoiding community, means that Norway is legally obliged to either drastically reduce or even cut off gas supplies to the UK.

Still, it’s what they wanted, eh?

It was funny watching NATO members, Russia and China bragging about their new weapons developments in the recent years.
Now the time has come to show to their prospective buyers if those guns are any good.

Next potential place in Europe to burn must be in Russian zone of interests, not a NATO member, but being closely monitored by NATO, and not an EU member.
Candidates are: Moldova, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo.
