In a short while I saw 3 microwaves, at least 10 kids scooters, 4 bikes and a bunch of tyres picked up between two lock gates at Lock 1 North Strand. Was chit chatting and was told this is just the last skip load. There were several more taken out.

Scrap dealers need to advertise themselves more so dumpers wouldn’t do this sort of antisocial thing. In Africa, Asia and other parts of the third world people recycle old tyres, wheels and clothes resourcefully.

I was once in a small African town, and a truck had overturned the year before. Stripped of the useful bits, the carcass of the haulier was left to rust in place. An enterprising young man and his team would go around and, after checking to be sure it was ok (a year and a day if not claimed, it becomes salvage) and was in the process of cutting it up to take the steel and other parts in for recycling into useful items.

Apparently the hardened steel of the leaf springs made excellent base for agricultural tools, including ploughs, machetes, hoes, etc.

I never found out if they were charged, or a deal done to get some of those items, or just that they were glad to be shut of it. But I thought it good it was not just totally abandoned.
