St David’s Hall, Cardiff, Wales
This morning/afternoon.
The Cardiff Philharmonic has cancelled an all-Tchaikovsky programme as ‘inappropriate at this time’.
The orchestra says:
‘In light of the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine, Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra, with the agreement of St David’s Hall, feel the previously advertised programme including the 1812 Overture to be inappropriate at this time. The orchestra hope you will continue to support them and enjoy the revised programme.’
Via Slipped Disc:
‘The concert included his decidedly apolitical second symphony, known as The Little Russian.
‘This is unutterably stupid. At the start of the First World War, the Proms conductor Sir Henry Wood informed the British government that he would continue performing Wagner and other Germans. The same rule prevailed in the Hitler war.
‘Only the Nazis ever banned Tchaikovsky.
‘Welcome to Cardiff 2022.’

Mail man changes his ‘Russian-sounding’ name (The Spectator)

Think it would be more defiant to perform it. Contrast the beauty of Russian culture with the sordid and evil nature of the current Russian regime. On the one hand it really is tragic the Putin is making everything Russian so toxic, on the other hand, I kind of wish every time a country started a war their culture became immediately radioactive.
“Putin is making everything Russian so toxic” – No, that would be the retards such as yourself that enjoy inflicting collective punishment.
Sorry I cancelled Tchaikovsky. Hope his career recovers when all this blows over.
“inflicting collective punishment” like what Putin is doing to Ukraine, or are you one of the “was asking for it” apologists?
Why do idiots need everything to be constantly re-clarified? The answers in the question. I don’t support Putin or his invasion. I also don’t support the horrors that are going to unfold in its wake. The Ukraine is the flashpoint for something far bigger. As ever, it’s the citizens that will be brutalised.
But, against that, a Welsh orchestra changed its prorgamme. The horror, the horror.
…here Nigel…1812 overture…bet that boll*x Napoleon was even worse than Putan…
What did we ban when the US invaded Iraq?
When they invaded Afghanistan?
How about Somalia?
Grenada?
Anyone?
Yeah, that’s my point.
rather than just saying what about this and what about that and saying it is wrong to so something because we didn’t do the same thing for something comparable in the past, maybe have a little think about it and maybe it is the case that we (as in, society in general) have learned from those past instances and decided that our reactions, our protest actions, need to go further than they did previously, that they need to be more impactful.
Maybe society is not perfect but we are improving little by little as time progresses and each time something like this happens, society reacts in a slightly more powerful manner each time until eventually it never happens again.
or not…..
I like the fact that someone thinks things are getting better, Jon. You’re entirely wrong, of course, as we’re upended from our Democratic slumber & pitched into Authoritarianism but a bit of rose tint can make things seem better. You’re gonna need buckets of that, in the years to come but Russia has proven that the vile American Empire is not going to get its way forever, as it enters its twilight. The end of its genocidal reign of terror will benefit most of humanity, this has been signposted clearly by the way the international community has turned their back on them, the very first time the opportunity arose.
Word salad.
Healthier than your usual diet, jungleman.

Also, I’ve always assumed Oleg was a spoof.
The Age of Ignorance.
Oliver Smith? How dull.
He really missed a trick there.
Could have gone for something like Shay Monpootin
This is just daft – i cannot understand the rationale for stupid decisions like the one in the article.
Or yer man changing his name – it’s his choice i guess but it wouldn’t be mine. Bleating about it by way of a big announcement kinda stinks too but then again when you’ve made one stupid decision (imo) what matter if you make a few more !
This is getting beyond ridiculous now FFS.
We live in an age of mass stupidity. Sit back and enjoy the show
Oh Death, free me from this mortal coil.
Isn’t Tchaikovski from Ukraine?
Have just gone on their website and sent them a message – accused them of wantom philistinism; won’t change the world but good for ones blood pressure.
And we wonder why the ruling class look at the populace as mindless cattle? Ah well, it’ll make the coming horrors that bit easier to cope with as we’ll despise one another so much by then that watching the deaths of millions will be no biggie. Oh, human flesh, nom nom nom….
There’s much more to life than meets the human eye, E’Matty – hope you get to see it.
You’re on the right path.
How do the people of Roosky (Co.Roscommon), feel?
Despite Mr Smith’s protestations of respecting all cultures, he seems to lack a vision of the role culture plays in society & clearly sees it as subservient to popular lowbrow political fads. His actions prove his utter disrespect for the very concept of Culture, as well as the fact that he’s a bit of a weeb. The type of people who’d appreciate this “gesture” are usually philistines of the lowest type, anyway, who wouldn’t know Tchaikovsky if it was used in the soundtrack of some midwit movie they were watching.
Tchaikovsky was born in Udmurtia, Russia, was the first composer to combine native Russian music with Western ochestration & was gay. My favourites are the ballets, personally, though I grew up with the 1812, which my Father adored.
Clowns to the left of me…
Whatever became of the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Battenberg families?
