President Michael D Higgins has suggested that Ukraine could become a neutral country

This morning.

Via The Times:

The government has distanced itself from the president’s remarks that Ukraine should become a neutral country in the interest of peace.

President Higgins said last week that a neutral Ukraine could discuss “what might be agreed in terms of defence rather than aggression” with other neutral EU member states…

…Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said: “It should be for Ukraine to decide whether it’s neutral or whether it joins Nato, and whether it wants to join the European Union or not.”

…A spokesman for the taoiseach said it was not for the Irish government to say whether Ukraine should be neutral or not. “We are here to support them on a humanitarian aspect and to support their territorial sovereignty. It’s not for me to make a comment [on neutrality],” he said.

Hey – didnt you hear? Advocating for some compromise and peace talks means you are pro-Putin

Ukraine should fight to the last man, and when their country is finally in ruins then the west can “invest” in the country to rebuild, thereby acquiring huge amounts of land and resources in the process.

Ukraine should get to decide for itself. Anything else is, in fact, pro-Putin. Forcing Ukraine to be neutral towards the country that just invaded it is farcical. It may end up being imposed but it’s not going to actually solve anything. Let’s remember who is forcing the Ukrainians to fight and ruining the country.

Ukraine hasn’t got to decide for itself for at least the past twenty years- which is the core problem.

By declaring itself independent from both blocks it can then do so- but not I suspect while that US puppet Zelenskyy is still around. His handlers want a bloody WW3.

I am the only one who gets the feeling that this is about a lot more than just wheat fields in Ukraine?

          1. Nigel

Why would they want to decalre themselves independant when one side invaded them and one side helped them when they were invaded?

          2. Mr. T

In fairness Nigel, one side invaded them, the other side used them as proxy to hurt the invaders. They did not offer troops or any actual support (despite agreements the US signed with Ukraine long ago). NATO are using Ukraine as proxy to inflict expensive losses on Russia, and also gather intelligence on Russian weaponry/vehicles/planes in the field. It is not because they care about Ukrainian people or their right to self-autonomy. Its all geopolitics.

If Ukrainian men were not being forcibly trapped in the country and forced to fight, there would be a lot more pressure to negotiate peace terms. Ironic almost, that Zelensky is exhibiting more and more dictator like behaviour as this conflict goes on. Banning 11 opposition parties (only 1 of which was Russian linked), banning men from leaving the country, shutting down all private media organisations. Not exactly the marks of a democratic and open nation.

          3. Nigel

Hang on. Nobody forced Russia to invade, any Ukrainian defence, which they are comepletely entitled to do, is going to hurt the invaders, and Ukraine has every right to expect supprt from its allies. Spinning this as a proxy war is ridiculous and completely western-centric. Biden literally warned Putin off mutliple times. He can stop and withdraw any time. He could even declare the breakaway areas Russian and nobody could stop him (holding them might be another thing.)

Zelensky has the right to defend his country – banning political parties is definitely not a good look, but curtailing the influence of the country that is invading you and killing your people and destroying your cities at this very moment is definitely within the remit of a war-time leader. You guys are obsessed with the motes in Zelensky’s eye while studiously ignoring the beams in Putin’s.

Whatabout this Jon? What’s your view on THIS? You don’t have one? Pretty much proves my point.

      Well said Micky de
All that’s needed is the removal of the Ukraine Nazis who do exist in abundance groups like the aznov militias
Mind you in quite a few ways ukraines situation is the same as irelands with part of each nation partitioned or annexed
And maybe a Northern Ireland style solution might work but thanks to the war the aftermath will make the last Cold War much like the tropics
We all forget since 2014 there was a little war in the separatist area that claimed 25 thousand people before russias illegal invasion

      1. Nigel

‘We all forget since 2014 there was a little war in the separatist area that claimed 25 thousand people before russias illegal invasion’

        Which Russia was responsible for.

140,000 NATO troops now massing on the Western Russian Border.
This is the path to nuclear war. We are literally days or even hours from an incident either started by a fool or a malicious actor.

Michael D introduces a way to de-escalate and our fools in Government commit us to war.

  2. Herzog

When did Irish politicians all agree to shift on neutrality?
Presumably Varadkar would also support Mexico’s right to join a military alliance with Russia and China and have nuclear weapons based there if they wanted.

He who pays the piper calls the tune

We are a US vassal state effectively – not being in alignment with the US would cripple our economy. Our politicians take their cues from US.

    2. Dinkum

Varadkar coveney martin are just administrators acting on behalf of our New masters
They cannot even run the country
Michael D Higgins has been the ultimate president for our country
He also was a very successful Labour politician that could talk rings around any other
Soft spoken highly intelligent and possibly the greatest debater ever born in this country
We are sitting on the edge of WW3 and the rhetoric keeps getting more and more hostile

      1. SOQ

Yes ‘Ukraine on Fire’ is very good.

There is an interview with Oliver Stone recently I am trying to find- I have seen a few snippets and he’s pulling no punches.

        1. Dinkum

He has a series called the Putin interviews a fascinating insight into Putin and what makes him tick
To understand your enemy one must first understand what makes him tick
I found it funny when Oliver stone handed Putin a DVD of doctor strangelove After he finished the interview and left the room
A minute later Putin came back in the room and said to Oliver stone
Typical American you gave me an empty case
Oliver stone also did an award wining documentary on Hugo chavis
One of the greatest film makers in the world who made Wall Street for one example

  3. Dinkum

It also was a neutral country in the process of what one could say a civil war using its army to suppress part of its country killing over 25 thousand people 2014 until 2021
They also removed a president by force and had a coup in median square in 2014 where Kiev seized power backed by far right parties
Since then the hatred was simmering
