    Probably the biggest energy crisis of our lifetimes and Ryan wants to ban peat.

    Absolutely no truth in the accusation that the Greens are a bunch of pampered middle class urban zealots floating around on a cloud then?

      Biggest crisis facing the planet is rom carbon dioxide emitted by burning fossil fuels, not to mention the destruction of vitally important biodiversity through over exploitation. Healthy ecosystems are not a luxury.

        And Nigel it’s all being imported now from the EU soaked in gasoline for good measure
        Starter logs etc
        And it will be imported for years as Germany develop its brown coal (turf) industry
        Apparently they move whole villages to make way for the mining and brown coal or turf is a pretty toxic industry the way the Germans do it
        But the industry has to be reduced so stop paddy producing so you can clean up and import it to paddy
        Proper goose stepping fuel from Germany or even Holland

      And it’s unclear if imported brown coal which is what Germans name peat is still going to be imported or those fire sticks and starter logs which is briquettes soaked in gasoline are still for sale imported from
      Russia(whoops banned nation for coal oil gas but will their turf or peat be on the list)
      Netherlands
      Germany
      All be legally sold ?
      If so add in the global footprint in transporting it all
      I say keep digging and burning it and selling it
      The day I see no plastic packaging in my local Tesco super value dunnes stores on food I will actually realise all this environmental crap is not all about taxing the poo out of us
      Let’s face it we have earth overshoot day now 6 months into the year
      It’s the day we use our allotted yearly quota of the worlds resources
      And boy meanwhile as they screw us for taxes and eamon Ryan waffles on they all support a war in Ukraine and keep upping the rhetoric that will lead to WW3 and not a peep about the global emissions of a NATO vs Russian war

        They’re not supporting a war in Ukraine. They’re supporting a country defending itself against an unprovoked invasion.

      it certainly lacks any weight when Ryan simultaneously backs unlimited amount of data centres and votes to allow large companies to freely pollute the environment as they please.

      Many rural/old communities all rely on burning turf for heating.
      Oil is too expensive, especially so now

          Hi. Not always could they. Coal burns hotter, so a wood or turf fired stove may actually melt if coal is used in it. And also you have to be careful of the coal, some burns much hotter. A friend had his house at risk using a different coal than usual, one with a higher coke content.
          Fire brigade smothered it rather than dousing it, and it was a warm house for days :-)
          A neighbour from Poland told me you had to check where the coal came from, as some producers provided coal that burned smoky, and some hot.

          On the other hand, I cannot burn any as my chimney leaks, so I get smoke in my bedroom :-)

    Unfortunately peat not only releases emissions when it’s burned it stores huge amounts of carbon which is released when its degraded/cut. We are sleepwalking into a climate disaster – hopefully those who illegally cut turf will be prosecuted.

    Here’s a fun exercise: have a scroll through “Rights2Freedom”s feed and see how many times they tweeted about turf before the last 24 hours. Being a turf seller and all, you’d imagine it would be occasionally, right?

    I don’t disagree with the ban on peat but if there are people depending on it there has to be allowance made for that. be it some kind of rural heating subsidy or at least a controlled landing. This kind of “we’re going to take a course of action and you, the people, are just going to have to deal with it :)” tomfoolery is why Green Parties, despite having such a valid mission and message, have so little traction worldwide.

    So, we close down Peat Briquette factories in the name of greenness, only to import the peat briquettes from afar, from companies that will make up the slack (!) in what was our export markets. Same, if not more due to transport costs, level of Nigel World Destruction, but away from the Irish greenie eye.

    “Plans to ban the sale of turf from September have been paused, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has told his parliamentary party. Mr Varadkar announced the pause on the same day Environment Minister Eamon Ryan robustly defended the plan to bring in the ban later this year, arguing that the pollution from burning turf is “killing people”. News of the impending ban has sparked a backlash from rural-based backbenchers in Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil.

    In an online meeting on Wednesday evening, Mr Varadkar is said to have told TDs and senators that telling those who cut and sell turf that they could no longer do so was “like telling the French they can’t have wine or the Italians they can’t have pasta”. Sources said he told party colleagues there will be a pause on the plan on that until the details are clearer. He did not provide any indication of how long the pause would be in place. Mr Ryan’s spokespersons could not immediately be reached for comment…”
