Turf Them Out

at

This morning.

Via RTE News:

The issue is causing great unease among TDs from rural constituencies in both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

In a robust exchange of views at meetings with each of those parties yesterday, Minister for the Environment Eamonn Ryan insisted that the regulations will focus only on the large-scale commercial sales and not on the traditional use of turf in rural areas.

However, those words have not reassured many in Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael who already rejected a proposal to allow the sale of turf in small communities with a population of less than 500 people.

…Despite the concern of government TDs, it is not expected that they will break ranks with the Coalition in tonight’s vote.

Dáil to vote on Sinn Féin motion to scrap new turf restrictions (RTE)

    Turf…
    …Blame the Greens…
…or maybe blame FF/FG for never having and forever resisting a coherent national energy policy since WWII…

the Greens are (mostly) just the lightning rod for this issue. FF and FG are glad to take a back seat and avoid the fallout that Ryan is attracting.

Like so many things like this in Ireland, it’s a long-standing issue that’s been kicked down the road by those in power hoping that someone else will take the flack.

Fact is turf is an Irish thing as Irish as Irish stew
I would say Guinness But that was originally an English brew named porter because the porters on markets drank it so hence the name
Brought to Ireland by Arthur Guinness
Sad thing is as our government close down the bogs
The Germans expand the lignite industry which is brown coal or peat which the way its mined in Germany is the most toxic process unlike ours of turf cutters
Turf is also a product for gardening called peat
And now that’s will all be imported in
Sadly they have also closed down power stations that could be reopened and spare us all the price gouging that is going on
Another is the capped kinsale gas fields that could be reopened and supply us with more of our gas needs and also reduce the global footprint by eliminating the global footprint of transporting the imported gas we need and of course it would be cheaper
But sadly our government has not one clue and honestly eamon Ryan needs to be dropped over Moscow and within a day the Russians would surrender just like when the Japanese surrender when the US dropped a WMD on Hiroshima

But sure they can cut costs by car sharing and growing lettuce in the windows?

It is glaringly obvious that Ryan has no clue how rural communities survive. He is the walking cliché of the affluent urban environmentalist zealots who demand we all adhere to their ideology. At least the likes of Saoirse McHugh have some idea as to the difficulties rural people face, but this guy is absolutely clueless.

Not looking good for the carbon tax now is it?

    1. Kali

He’s alienated rural and urban voters. Traffic is worse around cities than ever thanks to the oversized underused bike lanes, all to boost Ryan’s bike sale business. The cost of living is in part their fault and they want to compound it with more taxes. The green party managed to pull the wool over a few peoples eyes with the world is on fire and taxes will stop it nonsense. They could have went with a carrot and stick approach but instead chose just stick. Roll on the next election and we can see these self serving clowns out of government

Dreading when Ryan takes over as Taoiseach. I hope there are no diplomatic engagements during his tenure.

    1. Jdawgs

What??? Come again? The Greens got fupp all seats. I thought it was just a rotation between FG to FF and back again to FG. Please sweet baby lord of god don’t say we get Ryan as Taoiseach.

      1. Mr .T

The 5dimensional gyroscopic rotating Taoiseach. When it spins on its horizontal axis Eamon Ryan will be unveiled as the celestial rotary leader we all need.

    2. Kin

      Kim you are joking
I thought the revolving Taoiseach was only to be from FF/FG
If eamon Ryan is the Taoiseach then I suppose Irish people will be heading to Ukraine for asylum

The Greens have long been political whores. A vote for them is a vote for FFFG . The lessons of 2010 have been lost on the young etc who gave them votes. Maybe next time round a few brains cells might kick in

Are we even reading the same article?

This (very short) article is about the Greens losing political capital through sticking to their principles – basically the opposite to what you are describing.

      1. K. Cavan

We’re all reading the same article, Rob, it’s just that some of us didn’t completely fall for the scam, one of the best ever that the USA pulled on those countries also naive enough to fall for BLM, CRT, Trans, LGBTQIP+, Mass Immigration & the rest of the low-rent, low-brow retarded nonsense that they shove down the throats of the terminally stupid.
The USA is an Empire on the turn, all who follow its increasingly demented lead probably deserve what they get, as the East takes over as the centre of European Culture.
Paris, they’ll say, it used to be the Budapest of the West.

      1. K. Cavan

Who do you reckon they are answerable to, Rob?
Clue: They’re wealthy & they’ve probably only ever made fleeting visits here, if that & they don’t give a damn about the Irish, apart from the problem of getting rid of them.

  5. Boe_Jiden

The planet is facing literal destruction and these bog-brained morons only care about lining their pockets from selling turf.

    1. Gringo

Time for the sophisticated urbanites to cut their carbon footprint and show us country bumpkins how tis done.

      1. K. Cavan

Sure Dubbalin is hummin’ with them ‘lectric cars, especially over on the Southside & the Bay Area, blasting us furiously into the future, faster than a retro-fitted Delorean.
Hardly a carbon foot anywhere, to even leave a print, No.1 preference in the box labelled Green Party, the boot loaded up with bags of smug.
On the Nortside, they’re still burning pettoril, though but they’re half bogmen, anyway.

    2. K. Cavan

No, Boe, it is not facing destruction, literally or figuratively.
This like saying “small, far away” to a priest in a caravan.

    3. K. Cavan

I have to say, Boe, the image of rural TDs, lining their pockets with 20 cent pieces from selling turf has stayed with me.

  6. GiggidyGoo

Michael Ring expressed outrage at the plans, saying he wouldn’t support the Government. In the same breath, he said he won’t be voting for the Sinn Fein motion.

  7. Slightly Bemused

I only once cut turf, and to my memory the slean was bigger than I was.

But I do have a fond memory of turf cutting, sort of. In the late 1980s (I was in college, so 1986/87 I think) the my Mum and her partner in raising funds for the Wheelchair Association had a fundraiser of pushing a bog barrow around Ireland.

Marion Finucane saw us off outside RTE HQ, and away they went. I do not recall how well they did, but they were able to open the centre in north Kildare, that now is one of the top centres in the country.

Not sure where to get a bog barrow these days.

  8. K. Cavan

The tiny proportion of Ireland’s carbon footprint that even large-scale commercial turf operations create, within the miniscule carbon footprint of this tiny island means that even discussing this matter is ridiculous.
This ban is virtue signalling, within The West’s carbon reduction efforts, which are a complete waste of time & suffering, because 7/8ths of the planet has no interest in carbon reduction & as we reduce ourselves to oblivion, they’re building coal-fired power stations as fast as they can.
The Green Energy alternatives are a complete scam, carbon can’t be replaced, in a carbon-based economic system run by carbon-based life-forms, not by tons of short lifespan, non-recyclable plastic windmills & solar panels, anyway.
These efforts are quixotic at best, suicidal in reality but the Death Wish of our political class must be granted.
    The End is Nigh.
