“I do think it would be possible for us to win a referendum on joining a European defence (force) but I think that’s why it would be important for us to be a part of designing it alongside countries like Cyprus, Austria and Malta, who also don’t plan to join Nato.
“We are not members of Nato and we have no plans to join Nato, but we have never been neutral politically, we have always been on the side of democracy.
“Some people would talk about developing a European defence that is separate to Nato or almost in competition with Nato. That doesn’t make sense to me.
“It makes sense to me that there should be very close links between the European Union and any European defence and Nato – even though we may not be a member, we wouldn’t want to prevent cooperation or interoperability between any of those things.
“I think Irish people have always seen defence and security as being more than military alliances so we’re very proud of the role that we’ve played in United Nations peacekeeping around the world.”

We’re already in one…we’ve been part of the Nordic Battle Group since 2010.
Our overseas mission to Chad was under an EU mandate.
Our military served/serves in Bosnia & Kosovo under a NATO command mandate.
We are already part of PESCO which is just lacking an arsenal

An EU army on the cards again, it was only a matter of time. Might as well give the Germans the reins, what could go wrong?
The thing is, Kali, an EU Army would see Ursula von der Layen, a mad-woman, becoming Commander-in-chief of that army.
Recently, when asked to donate weapons to kill Russians, the German Army responded by saying they basically didn’t have any, as they’d been deliberately starved of funds by the German Minister of Defence, so they’ve had to order new weapons for the German Army, which frankly couldn’t fight it’s way out of a paper bag, which will be immediately donated to Nazis in Ukraine, to kill Russians.
Guess who the Defence Minister who downgraded the German Army was?

It’s telling that Varadker sees referenda as something he wishes to win, rather than a project to consult the Public about their opinion on the matter, isn’t it?
If a government actually takes sides in a referendum it makes the process somewhat moot & very much less than democratic. With the weight of the government & their MSM behind it, a tsunami of propaganda would make the result a foregone conclusion.
if he managed to get in all EU directives given to him we’d now have water bills on top of everything else we can’t afford, while getting the box room in the house back because your adult son has moved out .. to a military base abroad, preparing himself for the front line.
