Meanwhile at the Fianna Fáil Adare-Rathkeale cumann selection convention last Thursday…

The decision resulted in a straight contest between the two remaining candidates – sitting councillor Kevin Sheahan and barrister Emmett O’Brien. Mr Sheahan marginally won the vote. However, the convention descended into chaos over the party’s pre-selection strategy. A number of Mr O’Brien’s supporters formed a human chain in a bid to obstruct a party official from leaving the room to count the ballots. The official was left with no option but to count the ballots at the top table of the meeting, which was being chaired by the party’s children’s spokesman, Robert Troy.

“There was holy f***ing war but if party headquarters think they can act like a dictatorship, they have another thing coming,” said one member who asked not to be named.

Significant alterations suggested by Fianna Fail deputies to last night’s attempt by the Technical Group to rescind the promissory notes.

The Motion was defeated, we were not – in fact we have gained in strength and in conviction;

The searing truth in speech after speech by the members of the Technical Group, the honesty, the conviction, was in stark contrast to the sneering arrogance by a succession of government speakers;

We ended with over 40 TDs opposing the government’s amendment to our Motion – that’s nearly 25% of the current Dáil, so we’re getting closer and closer!

We have been on a long journey in Ballyhea and in Charleville, a sometimes rocky road, but this week we turned a corner, and we reinforced as we now are with new friends, new alliances, we aren’t in the least intimidated by what now lies in front of us.

You decide.

An adjustment of €2.4bn to deliver a budget deficit no greater than 5.0% in 2014

The split of the adjustment for 2014 should be approximately 50 / 50 between new tax and expenditure measures

The burden of adjustment should be levied in a progressive manner, unlike the current government’s two budgets to date

Education, Disability and Mental Health services should be protected and not be subject to any further cuts

A suite of “innovative policies” to encourage and promote private enterprise…

Hmm.

“We need to ensure that domestic entrepreneurs are incentivised with the same priority given to foreign direct investment.

“We are bringing forward measures which will underpin this commitment, including a lower rate of capital gains tax for entrepreneurs, tax relief for individuals making loan capital investments to SMEs and an expansion of the JobAssist scheme.”

Further to FF Senator Paschal Mooney’s decision in January to take only taxis driven by people born in Irieland.

Anon writes:

Just thought you might like to be aware that Timmy Dooley has submitted an amendment to stop Stamp 2 and 2a visa holders from being able to rent taxis to operate.

As you know Stamp 2 visa holders have some working rights in the state and this would seem a blatantl attempt to bar immigrants from a specific field.

Timmy is Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Transport, Tourism and Sport and one of four Vice-Presidents of the party.

So he must know what he’s doing.

But enough about Fianna Fáil.

90312788Chris Andrews during the 2011 General Election

If it didn’t fall into its lap, you could say it is a master stroke by Sinn Fein. In one fell swoop, it gives the party a strong possibility of a south Dublin seat, as well as creating a serious threat in this constituency to Kevin Humphreys, the second Labour TD – and, most satisfyingly for SF, it also puts a serious block in the way of a Fianna Fail seat there for barrister Jim O’Callaghan (Miriam’s brother).

Even as it is, Andrews’s ‘defection’ is emblematic of a wider political shift, which is the further welcome removal of SF from its IRA-associated past and the arrival into the party of credible, street-savvy and mainstream figures like Andrews.
…Andrew’s FF expulsion didn’t faze him. He was already disillusioned by the system and once told me, revealingly, that the problem was that people did not want real political change – “They only want to change the gatekeepers.”
