Free Friday?

The Bram Stoker Festival presents the Irish premiere of NYsferatu: Symphony of a Century, an animated interpretation of the 1922 horror film Nosferatu.

At St Anne’s Church, Dawson Street, Dublin 2, where Bram Stoker married Florence Balcombe in 1878.

Nigel Goggin writes:

Set in present day New York City, NYsferatu: Symphony of a Century turns the original film on its head, positioning the vampire character as that most contemporary of “outsiders” – an emigrant escaping war at home only to face economic exploitation and xenophobia in their new country.

The rotoscoped film, comprised of 35,000 hand-drawn images, replicates the eerie, flickering shutter effect of early cinema and will be accompanied by a specially commissioned live score by internationally renowned composer Matthew Nolan (Ireland), with similarly celebrated international musicians Erik Friedlander (U.S.A), Sean MacErlaine (Ireland) and Jan Bang (Norway)…

St. Ann’es Church, Dawson St, Dublin 2 on Friday at  7pm & 9pm

Glass Wall Productions Present…

Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts.

September 26-28 in the Sean O’Casey Theatre, St Mary’s Road, East Wall, Dublin.

Henrik Ibsen’s ground breaking, Ghosts, was first performed in 1881. In it, the playwright assailed the hypocrisy of moral codes, offering a daring treatment of such then-taboo issues as infidelity, venereal disease and illegitimacy.

Mrs.Helen Alving, has accepted her pastor’s counsel and endured her husband’s many infidelities in silence. Ten years after Alving’s death, she is to dedicate an orphanage in his memory.

Her son Oswald, kept innocent of his father’s profligacy, returns home. Oswald’s attraction to the housemaid – in reality, his half-sister – conjures up the ghost of his parents’ unhappy marriage.

This disastrous romance, along with Oswald’s increasing symptoms of the venereal disease inherited from his father, forces Mrs. Alving to confront her own “ghosts”.

Gulp.

‘Losing Alaska’

By Tom Burke.

Tom writes:

I have been working on a documentary about the village of Newtok, Alaska over the past three years.

The community there are threatened by rapid coastal erosion which sees up to 50 feet of tundra fall into the river every year.

The film follows their efforts to pioneer a new town on higher ground, their struggles to maintain their native identity and their daily lives as American citizens with no access to basic infrastructure like running water

A special screening of ‘Losing Alaska’ will be held at the IFI [Temple Bar, Dublin 2] followed by a Q&A with Tom and composer Gerry Horan on September 29 as part of DocFest. Tickets at link below.

Fair pay, in fairness.
