Spotted in the Amazon rainforest near Puyo, Ecuador by wildlife photographer David Weiller, an 8cm long Spiny Devil Katydid (Panacanthus cuspidatus) stares down the lens with its red eyeballs, poised to strike. Weiller adds:

 The Spiny Devil Katydid has powerful black-tipped mandibles and it can use its spiny limbs as a ‘casting net’ to capture other katydids, moths, caterpillars, snails and even small frogs.
