“After last week’s high-concept cover I decided to take a simpler approach and this week Le Cool is gift-wrapped in a 2-colour linocut repeat pattern. I hope I’ve managed to be festive while avoiding Christmas clichés.”

Future Shorts Festival

LeCool-NiallMcCormack-BankNoteBy Niall McCormack.

Who sez:

It’s a fictional bank note issued by Banque De LeCool for 1 Million ‘Yule Yo-Yos’ so Sean and Sinead Citizen can give themselves a ‘top-up’ for Christmas and enjoy it in style. I assume you’re happy to back this new Christmas currency, you can always go to the EU/IMF if it all goes pear-shaped.

You can print out a stash of cash here.

Teen shutterbug, Alex Sheridan‘s second le cool Dublin cover.

Alex sez:

“This was shot up on the roof of St. Stephen’s Green shopping centre [Dublin]. The rail was about hip height and had never been skated before. It took Darragh (Forrester) a while to land the trick, but I knew the photo would be worth his effort and pushed him to keep trying.

I wanted to fit as much of the city in as I could so I used a fisheye lens and leaned over the edge of the wall. Shortly after, security came up and escorted us out of the shopping centre.”

option1By 18-year-old skater/photographer Alex Sheridan

Who sez:

I took this photo while we were up on Kevin Street [Dublin], skating the gap from the roof over the railing to the path. Andy was trying to tre flip over it, but before he could land it the Gardai came and moved us on…

I use a Canon 5D Mark II and some prime lenses to take the photos, and natural light to create them. Often with my skate photos I use some flashes to enhance the mood of the shot. By lighting up something ordinary like a set of steps or a handrail, and having somebody do a trick down them you can create something extraordinary.

This week’s Le Cool Dublin issue

-1By Tom O’Dea and Brian Kenny.

Who will be exhibiting in the Gallery of Photography, Temple Bar, Dublin this evening and all weekend, as part of the Le Cool Compound.

They say:

The cover is based around our concept for the LeCool Compound, it uses the rules of a maths puzzle called Conway’s Game of Life. Each dot ‘lives’ or ‘dies’ from frame to frame based on the number of neighbours it has. If a dot has too few or too many neighbours it disappears…

The Le Cool Compound is an interactive exhibition as part of National Science Week featuring Lightscape and Tom O’Dea, Designgoat, and the Urban Farm.

-1Yes. It’s Le Cool’s twice yearly, nearly, Food Issue.

Photo by Katie Sanderson and Fiona Hallinan

Who say:

It’s part of a series of photos that were taken at the end of the day in The Hare, a temporary café we were running for the last month, as part of an exhibition in Temple Bar Gallery [Temple Bar, Dublin]. After all the customers were served, all the workers would sit down, break bread and have a family type mNOMNOMNOM

By London-based Dubliner John Dillon who sez:

“I remember a time when I was about 12, my friend & I went into town to buy some ‘Blackcats’ on Moore Street [Dublin] and it was ridiculously sketchy. We got directed to some oul one and we both had to ask for them using some code word. They broke us up & sold them to us one by one outside some cafe while the other waited across the street ‘casually’. Needless to say we were both bricking it.”
