I recently met an Independent local election candidate for Pembroke-South Dock, Anne-Maree Quinn. She seemed quite nice, so I had a quick search to see what she stands for. It turns out she’s very involved in pro-life campaigning. She’s much more reticent about this on her website. I’m not advocating a witch hunt against her, but it would be very easy for a pro-choice person to vote for her in the belief they’re supporting an independent voice.

Anne-Maree Quinn

Might this be the same Anne-Maree Quinn who wrote to the Irish Times in November 2007 opposing marriage equality?

It might not be accidental that this exclusive focus on emotional gratification coincides with a high divorce rate…”The question is not whether gay people should have relationships. The only question is whether this should be done in the specific context of marriage.”

Of course, the most important cross-cultural and historical function of marriage as an institution is raising children.

On last night’s The Nolan Show, Stephen Nolan was joined by Arlene Foster (DUP) and Caitríona Ruane (Sinn Féin) on the issue of marriage equality.

This was a day after the NI Assembly defeated a bill to enable marriage equality which already exists in England and Scotland. A marriage equality advocate Dean McKenzie joined the live discussion.

“A couple of my friends are running an art exhibition tonight called ‘All You Need Is Love’ in aid of Marriage Equality. There’s going to be some tasty tunes and booze on offer and loads of different types of art available for a steal. It’s on in the Copper House Gallery on Synge St in Dublin, from 6pm this evening.”

Tasty tunes!

Newly unveiled Fine Gael local election candidate Kenneth Egan was interviewed earlier by Niall Boylan on Classic Hits 4FM.

Niall described it as “a surreal experience” and “one of the strangest interviews I have ever been involved in“.

It starts off well but when Niall brings up the issue of same sex marriage things go a bit wobbly.

Reform Alliance TD Lucinda Creighton says she has “reservations” about gay marriage. Ms Creighton said she was in favour of holding a referendum on gay marriage, but declined to say if she would support it. “I have reservations,” she said.

12/8/2012 LGBT NOISE March for Marriage Protests

Ana María Jiménez Ortiz, a congresswoman for the Mexican political party PAN, has caused outrage by saying that gay people should not be allowed to marry because they don’t face each other during sex.

According to Mexican media reports Jimenez Ortiz told supporters during a forum on whether to legalize gay marriage in the state of Puebla that “marriage should only be considered in those relationships in which the members have sex while facing each other.”

A marriage should only be considered amongst people that can look at each other in the eye while having sexual intercourse,” Jiménez Ortiz said. “Something that does not happen in homosexual couples.”
