Girl Band @ Whelan’s, Camden Street, Dublin (€10)

Nialler9writes:

Dublin band Girl Band’s Lawman [above] is the best Irish single of the year so far, a noisey rumbling six-minute rock juggernaut of a song. They launch that song’s release on Any Other City Records with a gig in Whelan’s with local support from Simon Bird and Jetsetter. Win a pair of tickets in the gig guide [link below] this week.

Saturday Jan 25th: Hidden Agenda: Erol Alkan + Daniel Avery @ Button Factory, Temple Bar, Dublin (€10/€15, 11pm)

Nialler9 writes:

Erol Alkan has a serious reputation as a DJ and remixer but he’s only just released his own first solo track in December (‘A Hold On Love’) . His label Phantasy Sound released Daniel Avery’s Drone Logic, one of my albums of 2013, a textured yet jumbo-sized old-fashioned dance debut in the vein of Underworld. Put your party hats on.

Nialler9 writes:

Creators of my Irish album of the year (do vote for yours in the annual readers poll – ) play a rare live show. Their album Monochrome is top-class moody analogue synth-disco music inspired by a single song by ’80s Japanese band Mariah. Great poster too…

Ensemble Eriú @ The Back Loft, St Augustine Street, off Thomas Street, Dublin (€10, €15 with CD)

I’m smitten with this new modern trad project’s new album, which draws from experimental, minimal contemporary and jazz to create a fresh take on trad sounds. Live, the songs from their self-titled debut will be performed by a seven-piece band.
