Anon writes from Cobh, Co. Cork:

“This popped through the letterbox this morning. What I want to know is what Seán Sherlock going to do about the terrible smell of desperation lingering around the Labour party?”

But isn’t Simon Coveney claiming the credit for cleaning up Haulbowline?

Anyone?

Reporting in yesterday’s Sunday Times, Colin Coyle detailed how agriculture minister Simon Coveney’s former sailing partner architect Paul Hyde has been appointed to An Bord Pleanála by Minister Phil Hogan after having been appointed to the board of the Marine Institute in 2012 by Coveney.

Mr Hyde is due to resign from the Marine Institute to take up the planning position at a salary of €111,214.

Coveney and Hyde were in school together in PBC Cork and have been members of the Royal Cork Yacht Club. They co-owned a yacht Dark Angel previously. Hyde’s father, Stephen has donated at least twice to Coveney’s election campaigns, giving €2,500 for the 2007 general election.

The High Court has been told a bid may be made to jail Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney (above) for contempt of court.

Mr Justice John Hedigan heard papers have already been prepared to facilitate an application for the minister to be brought to court for attachment and committal to prison.

What!?

Judge Hedigan heard that on 30 July the minister had given an undertaking to the court that he would not appoint people to [two specific]  technical inspectors’ posts

But…

…it seemed the positions in question had been filled following the undertaking given by Mr Coveney.

Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney said he was “very embarrassed” after he had a summons for speeding struck out in the District Court. A car registered to him was clocked by a speed camera van in Cobh in May of last year traveling at 71kph in a 60kph zone.

Mr Coveney told the court that he was in the car on the night but that it was driven by his professional driver.

Under no circumstances will deposits in Irish banks be targeted for a Cypriot-style tax, the Government has insisted.

Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney stressed he was being “clear as crystal” that Irish savings were safe. He made the comments during heated exchanges in the Dáil on the bailout deal for Cyprus, rejected by its parliament but supported by the Irish Government and other euro zone member states.

Ah.

Not good for the gander, then.

Other than ‘sickening’.

Simon Coveney has become the sixth Cabinet member to breach the Government’s own rules in securing a staggering pay deal for his special adviser.

It has emerged today that the Agriculture Minister fought to award an extraordinary €110,000 salary to qualified dental surgeon Ross Mac Mathuna.

Six senior ministers [Howlin, Burton, Bruton, Varadkar, Rabbitte, and Coveney] have now broken the rules and awarded salaries above the €92,600 Government-imposed limit.
