The prototype QUANT e-sportslimousine debuted at the Geneva motor show last March – a four-seat roadster with four electric motors (one per wheel) drawing power from redox flowcell technology developed by NASA in the 1970s.

912bhp, 900km range, 0-100km/h in 2.8s, 380km/h –  approved this month for use on European roads, so no mere concept.

All generated by nothing more than salt water.

    Amazing.
But let me know when we have a vaguely affordable 4 door hatchback running on salt water.

Unless there has been some recent breakthrough, I was under the impression that you can’t power a car from just salt water?

Is it a hybrid maybe? A sneaky petrol engine in it too? I have so many questions!

Your knowledge if this issue certainly appears to be very limited. Good luck on your wonderful voyage of learning!

I think the battery will contain salt water, but it will still need to be charged just like any other battery. Claiming that it is “powered by salt water” is a bit of a stretch by them in fairness.

It’s a flow cell, not electrochemical cell. The difference is you can replace the electrolyte.

I’d be willing to bet that if you run it on sea water, it’ll break quite quickly, because of the complex nature of the salts in sea water.
I would expect that you need a very pure electrolyte solution – perhaps a specific salt, of specific concentration, in purified water…
I’m open to correction – but reading the wiki feature leads to that conclusion

Not sea water. Salt water. Nobody said sea water. Sure that’s full of creatures. Nobody’s putting that in a state of the art engine. That would be mad.

Four engines? So each wheel powered independently? Sounds like a lot that could go wrong. A bit OTT too but I like the progress at least.

It’s a motor, not engine. No such thing as an electric engine.

That yoke isn’t a prototype either. More like a mock up – a prototype would be working.

All of these design posts are the same, stylised concepts – only a person with zero engineering or technology nous would think them worth getting excited over.
