Waterford city (top) at the weekend

“With the 1989 Incitement to Hatred Act for all intents and purposes unworkable, we are, in 2014, operating in a policy vacuum where racism is concerned. This is not acceptable. We need the government to make bringing forward a new National Action Plan Against Racism a priority for the rest of its term. This National Action plan must include legislation for combating racially aggravated and other forms of bias-motivated crime, hate speech and incitement to hatred.“

I spoke to some folks living near the Manor St. Roma house – was pretty shocked to hear what they claim to be living with on a daily basis. Pretty sure mob mobilisation is not the answer however.

maybe the other Romany family were involved in criminality too?
many are, let’s not pretend otherwise.

    1. Rep

Maybe they were. Maybe those 3 houses they visited were the only criminals is all of Waterford. Other than those families of brown people, Waterford is an idyllic crime free haven.

      1. David

no, there’s criminals in all walks of life in Waterford i’m sure. calling in to a few white Irish criminals wouldn’t be any great problem either.

really, wouldn’t it? Are you saying that you want to live in a society subject to mob rule – however ill-informed, violent and intolerant it is? you want crowds of people yelling and threatening on our streets, and targetting those who they view as criminals, without benefit of judge or jury? And I wonder how you feel when people (criminals or others) are hurt when someone actually does decide to burn one of those houses? I’d also remind you of the famous incidents of paeodeatricians hounded out of their homes by similar mobs. I don’t think you’d actually like to live in a society where we encouraged such things. I think you’d find it scary and brutish, as it is.

i dunno – i’d march on people who insist on wearing their jeans slung below their @rse without a moment’s hesitation.

Are you? Well in that case your next port of call can be whoever founded that Facebook page for being guilty of incitement to hatred and violence.

“many are, let’s not pretend otherwise” …is that a heuristic observation pulled out of your arse or have you anything to back it up.

And what exactly do you mean by “many”… do you mean many as in a defined number that you consider large or a proportion of the Romany here in Ireland or what… exactly. Your point is so vague you sound like a politician.

I don’t agree with Mob rule. But if any guest in our country doesn’t abide by our rules or get involved in any level of criminality, then they need to leave or be removed.

It’s a shame, as these families are obviously innocent victims & we need to maintain our reputation for being a welcoming society…

      1. trobuff

Aren’t they lucky to be temporary witnesses to a progressive, open-armed society like ours? If they don’t like, we have a right to burn them out.

  4. JunkFace

Pretty shocking that a Lynch mob was formed here, in the 21st Century!

Also so many eejits think the Roma gypsies are Romanian, they’re NOT. They’re from all over Europe now but originally came from India, and have been cast out from settled communities for centuries, and wandering westward

    1. andyourpointiswhatexactly

Most of the roma gypsies who are here ARE Romanian, though. That exodus from India started around 1,000 years ago.

Take a disenfranchised population that don’t want to integrate from one place and move them to another country / city where they are equally uninterested in integration and this is the result! Call it mob justice or anything else but when nobody knows what to do with these people bad things happen. All your emotional outrage doesn’t matter a toss!

        1. Kieran NYC

A racist mob is never a solution. They’re not just “people who you don’t agree with”.

          They’re a racist, violent mob.

          1. Odis

I was referring to your stereotypical and dim reflexive comment to Rob there.

The mob well …..that’s rather like yourself – narrow minded and angry.

          2. Rob

Cheers Odis, you are correct Kieran calling me a racist is exactly the same as the angry mob. I wasn’t saying they were right I was commenting on why it happened.
Get out to Brooklyn much Kieran?
