Éamon Ó Cuív (left) and Michael Martin

We have just the man.

This morning.

Éamon Ó Cuív, you know who’s grandson, and Fianna Fáil leader Michael Martin at the launch of the party’s  Programme of Events to mark the Centenary of 1916 Easter Rising at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin.

Via Fianna Fáil:

The creation of Fianna Fáil, as a national movement, was inspired by the Leaders of the Rising and founded on the ideals of the Proclamation. Many of the founding members of our Party played a central role in the fighting of Easter Week; Eamon de Valera being the last commander of the Irish Volunteers to cease fire in Boland’s Mills.

In order to honour those who fought in the Rising and to celebrate this event’s monumental impact on the Irish Nation, the Party has established a Commemoration Committee/Coiste 1916 chaired by Éamon Ó Cuív TD to plan how best to commemorate the centenary. This Committee would like to invite you to submit your ideas as to how best the Party should commemorate the 1916 Rising in 2015 and 2016.

FIGHT!

I think FF should celebrate the Rising by enacting policies widely disagreed with, suffer the opprobrium of the general public for years and then wait for people to be so sick of their alternative governors that they give them a grudging mandate.

I think they should celebrate by participating in a recreation of the GPO siege, with them as the bold rebel leaders. Members of the public can then participate in a national lottery for the opportunity to shoot at them.

“The Committee is also asking all CDCs to establish their own Commemoration Committee in order to ensure that events are organised throughout the country to celebrate the significance of the 1916 Rising.”

No doubt FG, Labour and SF are all doing the same thus turning the centenary into a divisive inter-party political football instead of a chance to commemorate as a nation.

I look around and see a modern country, one of the richest in the world, open, democratic, free, equal and clean. The envy of many other countries and the destination for many bedraggled immigrants. Fianna Fáil, who ruled for most of our independence, have a lot to be proud of.

      1. Bluebeard

Eh, no. What is wrong with what I wrote? One of the best countries in the world by most standards. Check out the global rankings. Or maybe you don’t like it here?

In fairness you could say that every government since the foundation of the Sate has done some good for the country. Alas, every government have also siphoned off and/or sold off some of our greatest resources, wealth and funds for essential services. If we were to analyse that further, FF easily take the trophy.

every government since the foundation of the State has done some good for the country

            -eh no, you couldn’t actually.

  4. Nikkeboentje

Am I the only person who doesn’t get why we “celebrate” the Easter Rising. Why don’t we celebrate the day that we actually became a Republic?

Sorry guys, they are the soul of the nation whether you like it or not. Granted a few hiccups along the way like any country, but overall not a bad job. Like I said, the envy of many.

You’re consistent in your trolling I’ll have to give you that

have a good weekend Sir don’t let the repressed peasant mentality grind you into the dirt

  6. Mr. T.

In 1922 Irelands was robbed of the people and handed over to the Vatican with a few families here to keep shop and carve up the loot amongst themselves. Their greatest trick was to use the Civil War legacy as a smoke screen to pretend there were opposing political movements keeping check on each other.

Probably the greatest con job on any modern nation in our times.

Until the IMF came in 2010.

“Eamon de Valera being the last commander of the Irish Volunteers to cease fire in Boland’s Mills”
then expatriated by OSS to america.

    1. Dubloony

Saved by his US passport. UK wanted US in the war and could’t be going executing their citizens.

I like that they make it sound like a virtue that De Valera was the “last” commandant to surrender, as though he was hardcore …..when, in fact, he refused to accept the order to surrender that was issued to him from Volunteers HQ then in Moore St. and signed by Pearse, because it was delivered by a woman (Nurse/CnaMban, Elizabeth O Farrell).
      Hardcore Dev, hardcore.

Where is the equality today based on the declaration ? FF replaced rule from London by rule from their elite for their elite. That is their legacy in 2016

  8. mauriac

sick of the proclamation being treated like a holy text instead of the contradictory vague mess written by a small cabal that it is.

  9. Kieran NYC

I think FF should celebrate the Rising by trotting out these cadavers every so often to remind us not to vote for the crooks and liars again.

      we need another 1916

by which I mean the British response

roll out 20 of the bigger traitors and give them what they so richly deserve

  10. Ultravox

Typical Broadsheet posters – whinging like mini-Brian O’Donnells of Gorsehill about an undeniable and historical contribution to Ireland’s freedom. You’re such arseh*les.

      1. Joe the Lion

Nor me either. Freedom my ass. For fupps sake.
The progeny of the original soldiers of destiny wouldn’t know the meaning of the word having, inter alia, sold our fishing rights and mining rights and later, our water and national airline off to private interests.

Vote Lisbon for like jobs and stuff

  11. Truth in the News

Fianna Fail was established 10 years after the 1916 Rising it
is somewhat ironic that the remaining rump would be into commerating an
uprising when they practically gave the country away, had their policies
rejected by the electorate 2011, and that are now being implemented by
those who replaced them, indeed they should join up and call themselves
    “Me Fein”
The 1916 leaders will arise up from the dead yet….is this, they gave their
lives for….now a colony of Germany, that was previously one of England
