For your consideration.

Julien Temple‘s excellent  2015 BBC4 documentary ‘The Best Thing Since Cavan’ on The Strypes and their ongoing mission to bring R&B and rock ‘n’ roll to a new generation.

Being the short-sighted provincial that I am, I like them because they’re from Cavan. (note – this logic does not extend to Sean Quinn)

foos, hozier, ash and the strypes. i feel like we can blame TXfm for encouraging this kind of bland banality.

I agree – what an uninspiring lineup. I don’t mind foo but they only have 2 songs. ash had 1

It will be a long afternoon

why? if you don’t like FF then why go?
or if it’s for one of the other acts (all equally as awful) then go to see them and leave before FF come on…

I still think they need to fire their stylist.

And while I’m not much of a fan of them, they’re a bunch of teenagers playing Slane with one of the biggest bands in the world. To say I’m jealous is an understatement.

  3. Bingo

I saw them in a pub in Dublin about a year ago. A competent pub rock band, no more than that.
Fair play to them though, nice gig to get!

    1. Bacchus

Some of us would regard “competent pub rock band” as being pretty much the the pinnacle of what a real band should be. From Muddy Waters to The Clash, The Stones, hank Williams, Dr Feelgood, Squeeze, The Rumour et al right up to The Strypes pub bands have been the heart beat of rock music. Not the cock rock of stadium bands, not the chart fodder that actually defines derivative and certainly not the pretentious art school “rock” that fills most of the profit driven festivals.

I hate that attitude about what a real band should be. I’ve no beef with the strypes, but that’s a load of poo.

Twas at Bacchus, lad! I’m not trying to be contrary for the sake of it, but It’s really tiresome to hear people talk about what constitutes real music or a real band.

Well I clearly love them and fully admit to my bias! They really are (In my opinion) a fantastic live band and their new stuff is really very good…again my opinion! Also Dave Grohl said ages ago that he thought they were great, but sure look, bunch of teenagers from Cavan playing Slane is pretty cool nonetheless! Cavan Bias for life!

Saw the BBC4 documentary on them a few weeks back. Kids who love music, play the songs they love, practice a lot, do a lot of gigs and get signed by Elton John’s label now have a slot playing at Slane.

In fairness, there is a lot there for the easily made jealous to hate.

Fair dues to you the lads in the band, I hope they get the weather.

  6. Jones

Fair beans to the young lads but they need to distance themselves from covers to gain more serious recognition
