You’d think they were giving it away.

McDonalds, Grafton Street, Dublin, this morning.

Starving, impatient students and hungover office workers.

Imagine the whiff.

It’s looking like a very popular offer, they’ll surely need more than 144 breakfasts.

    1. Weedless

That piece is primarily about ground (minced) beef in the USA. If you go to any half-decent butchers in Ireland you’ll see them making the mince in front of you from actual chunks of beef or you can ask them to.

      1. mauriac

that’s the point.there’s no comparison between proper real minced beef from a butchers and the bizarre , tasteless, fat filled,”patties” made from god know what that they serve up in mcDs …

it’d be nice if folks that got a free breakfast took the money they saved and gave it to Daffodill day.

Actually it’d be nice if we all gave a few quid to it.

    1. ahyeah

Yeah, but it wouldn’t really be a free breakfast then, would it? They’d just be paying someone else for it.

without being too much of a dick, i have a huge problem with funding cancer research that will owned by big pharma, the benefits of which will be sold back to the public.

      1. ivan

I’d have similar problems. but I suppose, maybe, until such time as a cure is found, maybe there’s consolation in thinking that some of your money will go to just making lives more comfortable in the short-term.

Big pharma is here to stay. I’m not saying this as some justification; i lasted 2 chapters of that Ben Goldacre book about it and gave up because it was just too bloody depressing.

my point? maybe we worry about the big pharma aspect tomorrow – and give today?

          1. ivan

Well you can’t just leave it at that…

I’m not a shill for the ICS so I don’t have a dog in the fight at all, but is there evidence of micky-taking going on with them? Are you talking CRC levels of nest-feathering? Or do you just know somebody who reckons there’s a few bad ‘uns in there?

      2. Drogg

Scottser a majority of the Cancer research done by the Irish Cancer Society is done by Academics like PHD and Post Doc students. This research is done directly for the ICS and they publish the results in medical journals this is done on the majority through Irish universities and not Big Pharma as you call it.

          1. Drogg

I only know this cause my wife did research for them, I am sure if you dropped them a line they would let you know what research they are currently funding.

The correct economic value of a breakfast from these obesity merchants is probably around €5.

That’s the amount per visit McDonalds pay you, or pay the State, whichever is going to have to pick up the bill for obesity.

€5 per McDonalds visit by 50 visits a year by 20 years is just €5,000, a fraction of the cost to the State of having to deal with an obese citizen. Tayto, Coca Cola, Apache Pizza and the rest should cough up the shortfall.

The idea of you paying McDonalds to provide you with nutritionally inferior and unhealthy food and drink is bonkers.

If you’re going to compile a list of ‘obesity merchants’ (your term) – then where do you stop? Alcoholic drinks are just as much a cause of obesity, as is excessive amounts of spuds.

Can you get fat from eating only potatoes? I was always under the impression it was the butter and milk and salt that got you. Pre-famine, people were going through stones of the things everyday; pretty funny to imagine them as a fat-arse peasantry.

          1. John E. Bravo

Interesting link; am at a loss to the relevance to me picturing a famine beginning with a fat population.

          2. scottser

twas just that spuds weren’t available all year round, and the peasantry had to ate all kinds of weeds and nettles during the summer, or ate the last of their cereals which would contain ergot. rather than picture a portly peasantry, you could just as easily picture them off chunk, wandering round like grinning, hungry buffoons.

        1. Spaghetti Hoop

Yes but they weren’t leading a sedentary lifestyle pre-famine as abounds today. I mentioned spuds because they are high-starch, high-carb and if you were to eat only from this food group and not burn off the carbs you’ll gain weight quickly.

Hot chicken fillet rolls in every spar/centra/other are just as bad as anything McDs sells.

      3. Soundings

We do place exceptional taxes on alcohol though with excise duties. Some people feel these taxes aren’t enough, and retailers sell alcohol as a loss leader, and we now have proposals for minimum alcohol pricing.

Same thing with these obesity merchants, slap a €5 a meal, obesity tax on each takeaway. After all, it is the State and you and me who’ll be footing the bill for the hordes of Type 2 diabetes fatarses.

        1. Spaghetti Hoop

Despite your correct observations, I can’t agree with your solution. Nutritional education, health campaigns and mandatory ingredient-listing are working and should continue to. After all of that, you can’t forcibly remove someone from McD’s and into YoSushi just because you’re angry about your taxes going on their (supposed) health-care for their (supposed) diet. Plus a lot of workers use McDs for quick food and drink and are not obese. You don’t like the McD Corporation? Fine. Neither do I, nor many. But it appears a lot of Irish consumers like their products.

May I add ‘Diet’ soda drinks… diet Coke, diet Pepsi, 7up Free, etc all cause the body to PUT ON WEIGHT.

I nearly peed myself with laughter when I read that the first time. Google it :)

    2. Anomanomanom

That’s a ridiculous post. None of the things you mention cause obesity in anyway. The Moron who stuffs him/her self stupid with them cause obesity. So maybe the moron who’s obese should pay a fat tax to make up the short fall.

      1. Clampers Outside!

Back to the guns don’t kill people, people kill people argument….. and fuck corporate responsibility for the world they exploit.

Yeah, feck coporporate responsibility, sure all coporations are psychos anyway, and in America, they’re psycopaths with the exact same rights as citizens, but sure feck making corporations have any real responsibilities, just so long as the end user gets all the crap, who cares.

  3. Jessica Carroll

I saw a bunch of yung wans in there earlier.

They were all looking for the SAUSAGE McMuffin if you know what I mean.

    1. Bingo Slimz

Exactly. I can understand people who can’t afford a breakfast being there, but you just know most of these vermin can afford it. Makes my skin crawl.

          1. Lorcan Nagle

That seems excessive for people availing of a free offer.

I mean, the head of the office I work in gave me a voucher for a free lunch in the canteen today. I could afford to pay for it but I used the voucher anyway.Am I vermin too?

  4. andyourpointiswhatexactly

I fupping LOVE Mickey Ds breakfasts. I’m raging I didn’t know about this.
Fupp yizzers, yiz bunch of begrudgers.

  5. Markus

do people not put any value on their time? I’d you spend twenty minutes queuing for a free mcmuffin that would cost 1 euro and that wyou wouldn’t eat otherwise are you not completely wasting your time

  6. Peter Dempsey

I feel sorry for people who are so far up their own arses that they can’t appreciate a free McDonald’s McMuffin. Typical snide bores.
