Thomas Kent, executed for his role in the 1916 Rising
The Irish state had always meant,
To get round to burying Kent,
But we all know it’s true,
There was so much to do,
Who can say where that century went?

The cynic in me says they’re only doing this now so they can have a ‘burial’ celebration and make a big deal out of it for the year that is in it, rather than just having done it years ago…. all very convenient, in it.
Gives me the creeps.
I’ve never heard him referred to as Thomas Kent before, it was always Tomás Ceannt in my day…
Ditto. Plus the train station in Cork named after him was always Ceannt to me. But there’s a station in Galway named after Eamon Ceannt which has screwed things up a little so maybe that’s why ‘Kent’ is now used mores. The station thing may sound trivial but it’s a big deal if it keeps these men’s names living on in today’s vocabulary.
FG targeting the Sinn Fein vote perhaps?
Or people not letting SF define the occasion and laying claim to be the ‘legitimate’ republican party or whatever nonsense they say.
I would agree, I have already seen some of this manoeuvring with local groups.
To be honest, I couldn’t give a toss about the commemorations or the flag-waving nostalgia, but I think it’s fair enough that the political parties who actually contributed to the State (with their ups and many many downs) should be able to have their say as opposed to the party that spent 30 years trying to blow bits of it and its citizens up.
Anyway, I don’t have any faith in the thing being able to inspire anyone to talk about a new direction or future for Ireland other than with the usual partisan point-scoring and refighting the Civil War and boring the arse off me.
A fair synopsis.
I agree with this but I’d be cynical enough about the true motivation of FG, a party which has shown very little republican character since its establishment… Just an observation.
