Do these people have some sort of permit to do the work of coastguards and navies. Surely if the crew are being paid to deliberately seek out people to bring them into the EU they are people traffickers.
I was thinking that. But I suppose if you then surrender your passengers to the appropriate authorities, you can’t be charged with people smuggling. I wouldn’t like to put that theory to the test though.

And while we’re at it wasn’t it the same Frau Merkel who condemned Ireland for “Acting unilaterally” when it came to the banking crises yet goes off on one of her own when now more than ever a united Europe was needed. Refugees are escaping persecution by fleeing to neighbouring states. Walking trough 5 or 6 of them to get to where you want to be is migration. Sure why don’t we just open every border everywhere, be grand. And before the do gooder, fresh outta college, fury hat brigade get a hold of me let me say I’m all in favour of Europe taking as many as we can from Syria. Lets just do it properly.
Hungary is currently being hammered fro essentially executing European law i.e. attempting to send refugees back to the country in which they first landed. Lets fix this properly. For sure the way we have thing sis not correct but Carte Blanche liberal idealisms wont sort this at all. In fact it’ll likely only make matters worse offering the racist, xenophobic and the far right shi*t stirrers all the ammunition they need.

Eh, as right as you may be you realise these particular fundraisers are not really suitable for your scorn.
They are raising money to buy an extra boat for MOAS.
It operates with MSF, an organisation who don’t give a hoot about borders(the hint is in their name).
MSF could not care less who the people are or where they are going, they just help people who need it.
Admittedly a crowd funded lifeboat could raise a few eyebrows for anyone looking to have a good old fashioned jibe at the hipsters.
However educate yourself before lambasting this particular effort. Very worthy cause.

You should also note that a lot of Broadsheet users won’t click on a “You Tube” link as they may be in company or (even) at work.

Punches, you have a point. If you followed your logic through, however, all charities should cease to exist. Nobody should do anything for anyone else until all govts had worked out & implemented comprehensive plans for the problem in question.

Hi guys,
These efforts are being carefully coordinated with the Naval rescue efforts and those rescued are landed wherever they are directed to. The crew of the MOAS vessel are highly professional and they are being assisted by Médecins Sans Frontières, who also have two rescue ships operating. The Director of MOAS is a former Commander of the Armed Forces of Malta.
It’s totally reasonable to have concerns about uncoordinated efforts, this is why we partnered with MOAS to make sure that we were supporting existing, professional services that work in partnership with government

This is a terrible idea. It will not realistically make any difference.
Instead of investing $3m in a useless boat, why not spend a few thousand on an information campaign at the various departure points along the southern and eastern med? Show people how risky the crossing is, explain that the EU is working on a protocol for accepting refugees and that waiting another 10 days should make things a lot clearer.
The job of performing search and rescue in the med belongs to coast guard and naval services.

I also tire of saying that. Calling them migrants is divisive it totally devalues real migrants. There’s a nice bloke from South America at my work who does the accounts, he’s a migrant. Calling refugees migrants affects the social cohesion of him and other actual migrants and dehumanizes the refugees. Watch as unprovoked attacks on random migrants increase by people buoyed up by this narrative.

People are refugees until they reach safety. When they refuse to register in one EU country and insist on traveling from one safe place to another they become migrants. The EU needs to close its borders and start taking large numbers of people directly from the camps in Lebanon – that is the only way we can help the most needy victims of this war.
