From top: Summonses served on Anti Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy this afternoon, and AAA Cllr Kieran Mahon last night

RTE reports:

“Summonses have been served on people in connection with a protest in Jobstown in Tallaght last year during which Tánaiste Joan Burton and her special advisor were trapped in a car for over two hours.”

“Two Anti-Austerity Alliance councillors and a sitting TD are among 27 people facing charges including false imprisonment, violent disorder, and criminal damage.”

“Gardaí served summonses on a number of those people last night including councillors Kieran Mahon and Mick Murphy…The adults are to appear at the Courts of Criminal Justice on 2 November, the juveniles at the Childrens’ Court on 29 October.”

The law on false imprisonment is:
15.—(1) A person shall be guilty of the offence of false imprisonment who intentionally or recklessly—
    (a) takes or detains, or
    (b) causes to be taken or detained, or
    (c) otherwise restricts the personal liberty of,
    another without that other’s consent.

I too believe Joan is a complete spanner spinning this for sympathy. She’s an idiot and I hope this helps in some small way to bring her down politically.

Anyone else here her struggling on Morning Ireland this morning to answer questions on what have Labour actually done since getting in to govt….. and on the morning of the Labour think-in she couldn’t even field those few questions with any real answers, what a fool.

Seems a pretty clear cut case then. They are free to protest their innocence so I think the protest is unnecessary.

Yes, the ass wipe gets a legal summons to court, but feels like he shouldn’t so organises a protest about it.

The man is a class A moron.

Burton can withdraw her complaint and this all goes away. And who was other other woman in the car? Has she made a complaint to the Garda too?

I’m not a fan of Paul Murphy but this is entirely political and that’s a dangerous thing. Has been going on in this country for generations any time the establishment feel they are losing their control.

People have no idea what goes on behind closed doors in Ireland to make sure a smallish cohort of people who all know each other, keep control of the economy and social policy for their benefit.

Maybe the car-trapping was another Young Fine Gael black-op, like the Dáil protest which you helpfully unmasked for us.

  4. Praetorian.

The Gardai on the day could have very easily removed Burton and her gofor from the situation within minutes of it begining. It was a volitile place to be for that silly woman to be in the first place.

  5. Yea, Ok

I’m glad these morons are being prosecuted, but it’s only giving ammo for their martyrdom in the eyes of their legions of braying idiots.

Yep, the yellow ribbons are still tied to trees in Donaghmede months after “Je suis Derek” was released on a technicality. Saves getting new ones made up for the next set of national hero martyrs…

    2. classter

I’m also fine with them being prosecuted.

I wish, however, that the Guards had been so proactive in the wake of the Moriarty tribunal.

She was never in any danger. You cannot tell me that should she wanted to get out quicker she couldn’t have. It was in Dublin, they can deploy car loads of Gardai or riot forces in a matter of minutes… I personally believe that this was a deliberate action to undermine the AAA and the protest in general and now it is actually falling within the confine of political policing, a VERY dangerous exercise that we will all pay later if not strongly challenged.

So because “car loads of Gardaí or riot forces” could have been deployed but weren’t, that means a crime couldn’t have been committed?

Have a bit of cop on Gers.

Have they lpoked at footage of the protests in Greece or Spain? Jobstown was tame in comparison. Burton would want to get a grip considering how much public anger there was towards Labour, nevermind FG.

    1. greektragedy

So much sexier when the French, Spanish , Greeks protest…. shiny tracksuits and a martyr with a megaphone just does nothing for me. BS campaigns for a sexy revolution with Julien Mercille as its poster boy. All in favour?

  8. Cian

Paul Murphy said he was “elected to break the law”, breaks the law and claims he’s not guilty. Got a bit scared of prison, has he?

  9. Daisy Chainsaw

I hope every garda who stood around scratching his/her hole is called as a witness for the defence. Their ineptitude and inactivity caused the car to be static for a couple of hours.

    1. Rob_G

I would also be in favour of the Gardaí beating a path with the business-end of their truncheons, but they probably had to worry about their own safety, plus the negative publicity that bloodied full-time protestors would cause

      1. newsjustin

Then there’d be the compensation that would have to be paid to protestors who were injured and unable to go to work………….oh wait, no.

  10. Jackdaw

Murphy is too cowardly to leave his address on summons but has no problem in leaving the name of the Garda looking after the case on it. What a willy.
