Long-distance kayaker Clyde Barendse
Sarah Kelly writes:
This man (top and above) is currently circumnavigating Ireland in a kayak and deserves a big round of applause! (and a cuppa tea!).
Clyde Barendse is from South Africa and came to Ireland for the first time 3 weeks ago. Upon arrival he took part in the Liffey Descent Race, and then set his sights on a circumnavigation of our lovely island! In the Autumn, no less.
Clyde set off from Mayo on October 12 and has now reached Midleton in Cork. You can track is progress, with blog and photos here.
He’s doing this solo, with no formal assistance (though everyone he’s met so far has been extremely helpful – from B&B owners, local fishermen, the Irish Coastguard, Canoeing Ireland members etc… Irish hospitality!)
Clyde is raising money for a cancer charity that run a weekly bus from Donegal to Galway each week with cancer patients. The Donegal Galway Cancer Bus. There are no cancer treatment facilities north of Dublin or Galway, and the charity doesn’t receive any government funding, so this kind of fundraising is imperative to their existence.
Can we please ask your lovely readers to donate [link below] what they can?

Middleton in Cork, you mean Midleton Cork I think, the extra ‘d’ is very English of you.
Well spotted Disasta! That was me, and I’m very Irish :) Apologies for the extra ‘d’ Midelton!
Fair balls to Clyde to be fair to be fair. I’d say it’s incredibly tough, but incredibly fulfilling all the same.
South Africans are some tough bastiches
High five Clyde.
I’m worn out from Dublin Marathon donations but I’ll follow yizzer blog and spread it about.
The iDonte link at the bottom is broken – but you can go to the fundraising page through the other link, the one to the blog.

Thank you for bringing that to our attention Sarah. A great cause and a very beneficial facility that none of us know when we might need to avail of in the future…well done Clyde, a true SUPER HERO.
Fair play in fairness.
Midleton in Cork has one d!
Fair play to Clyde, what an amazing journey. I bet he’ll have arms like iron by the end of it.
Antipodeans are nuts in the most wonderful way sometimes.
