Road Safety Authority chief Moyagh Murdock

Ms Murdock has said that we need,
Higher fines for the wealthy show speed,
Hit their pockets hard,
To keep them on guard,
It’s mere common sense and not greed.

a propos of nothing in particular, but there was a spate of advertisements recently discouraging people from using mobile phones when driving, on the basis that it’s as dangerous as driving when under the influence of alcohol.

So I’ve a question – and this is purely out of curiousity – is there a *good* reason why, if indeed using a phone is as ‘bad’ as driving drunk (and the ad appeared to say it was) then the penalty isn’t as severe?

How could you sully the poetry of Ireland’s leading leftie intellectual by posting such asinine rubbish under this great work of poetry. For shame!

The idea that fines should be weighted around means/income is common sense I would have thought.

I mean prison sentences are universal, you deprive people of the same level of freedom, but say a 150 euro fine for someone on social welfare versus someone earning the average wage is really weighted toward the poor guy.

Fines should also be weighted to balance other privileges. No-one could seriously argue against higher fines for men, settled people, or those living within certain distances of major public utilities.

Money making scam is all the points and fines are.
Hiding behind bushes where the speed limit changes is what they’re at for the most part.
